Dude I feel the same way. Summer 1988 some friends & I formed a cover band and worked on Testament, Celtic Frost, Metallica, King Diamond, Slayer etc etc and did exactly one gig before the drummer had to quit to focus on school - he was the youngest guy in the band, was going into his junior year and we rehearsed in his parents’ basement. That was an amazing summer, I turned 21 and it seems like yesterday.
I've been fascinated with Alexs' abilities for about 35 years, his ability to blend extreme technical proficiency with extreme melodic value in my humble opinion is extraordinary. I've never gotten a chance to hear Alex speak until now, what a treat. A true genius in his field.
The man the master! He probably won't remember me I was one of probably many guitarist he was emailing back when he left testament to do jazz. He taught my guitar instructor Ray delot back in Hollywood. Alex is one of the few good dudes in music that loves to talk shop. I thank him for our talks they helped me through a bad time
Simply, an amazing guitarist and person. I got to share a beer with him at a small club when he was touring with the Alex Skolnick Trio. Took a picture with him…damn, I wish I still had that flip phone with the picture🤘❤️
I remember when I heard Alex's solos on Testament's first album The Legacy I was all "Damn! He's like the Yngwie of thrash metal!". No thrash guitarists at that time had that level of skill. And he was only 17 or 18!
Such a great interview dude did a really good job you clearly have to be very intelligent about this subject matter to properly interview a guy like Alex. Props
I've got the LTD AS-1 hardtail in Lemon Burst, and it's basically a '59 LP with modern pickups. Fit and finish are unreal, and it sounds perfect for 80's hair metal.
People like Alex are the reason your and my country are invaded by criminals. Educate yourself about this far left liberal dude. Should have stayed a guitar player. Unfortunately he thought it's a good idea to get into politics.
Had no idea Satch played with Lennie Tristano. I'm a sax player 1st and Konitz was my 1st big influence, then getting into rock and guitar as i went throigh my teens people always got confused when my playlists would switch from bebop to thrash metal. There are always connections haha
This is an excellent interview….blurring the lines is a huge part of being a growing guitarist. Playing metal is great and fun but it can only go so far and that is with respect to the chords….heavily distorted barre cords and such get super boring its a lot of fun and challenge to know chords all over the neck. What he said is 100% true…metal only scratches the itch for so long.
@@JD-vj4go I hear you - and of course it is subjective -I have been a metal guitarist for 50 years - I am 61 - and I still love it....Ultimately in my case though I learned so much more of the fretboard and pushing into blues and jazz....I'm always a hard rock/metal guy - but in my case I found it limiting..
Alex is completely right about dynamics. The vast majority of modern heavy rock players have completely lost this art. Not sure if it's a chicken or egg thing with noise gates and active pickups but there's definitely a correlation with their rise and that shift
@@Burnt_Gerbil He's a brilliant guitarist, but that video and "song" was beyond ridiculous. Sure it was "then" , but the cringe factor shall echo through eternity.
How cool is it that one minute I'm trying to learn Alex's solos in 1988, and here I am watching him on youtube in 2024.
@theunbeheld Trial by Fire. I failed miserably.
Lmao that's a long fuckin minute bro
It's not that cool, really.

Anything from Alex is a gift❤
Alex is a beast. One of the all time greats on guitar.
Absolutely love Alex and his playing!
Best Thrash lead guitar player for me. And one of my favorites in general, very inspirational.
What a massive influence Alex has been for decades. An unbelievable player with chops & feel 🤘🔥🤘

Still one of my all-time favorite and inspirational guitarists.
Best news all day, they're releasing the green one soon to the mass market.
Alex, your solos on The Ritual are absolutely incredible.
All His solos are incredible full stop .
🙏🙏
Love all the AST albums!

Alex is so underrated it's ridiculous..
kudos on being a great interviewer!!!!!!
"I'm a really big fan of dynamic players"
Oh yeah 👍 😎
Excellent job with the interview.
Thanks from Sweden! ❤

Alex is an awesome dude
Great interview!!
I used to love the Ibanez Sabers Alex used to play during the "Practice" era...
Great guitar player
The album he did with Michael Manring & Tim Alexander is a gem!
Attention Deficit: The Idiot King
Oh man what I would give to walk into a coffee shop and have Alexs' Trio playing there.... I'd probably look like a deranged hypnotized psycho

I've been playing metal for 40 years listening for a lot longer and I still love it. Not bored at all.

@@joerectifier You might be listening to some pretty limited metal then.
Back to thrash to make some what of a paycheck
51:44 takes me back to New World Order
Why did you stop "the Jazz" 😂

Music is hybridised appreciate feedback on my original guitar compositions
Why isn't he wearing a mask?
Halloween is over already 🤷♂️
@@Burnt_Gerbil I talking about COVID mas that he made a video/song about awhile back.
