    Pete, thats a beautiful Corvette, and very nice job on the engine. There are mixed reviews on these new bolt-on EFI units. Some people say the work great, others not so much. I would thought the MPG would have been a little better than 8. Any thoughts ?

    • @PetesGarage
      @PetesGarage  4 года назад +2

      Thanks Norm. Well, my guess is the people that have problems go a little beyond than just the EFI unit. People bring me all sorts of cars with either a Sniper of a FiTech unit to tune for them and it's not a tuning problem. It's usually an incorrect build problem exaggerated by and EFI system.

      @@PetesGarage yes, I can see where that would create unexpected issues. Since I am getting ready to install a fresh engine in my truck, and have access to an engine dyno locally, I may look into EFI. Thanks for the reply.

      I know this is 2 years old and I hope you pulled the trigger on a efi system. I run a custom auto shop and as such have installed hundreds of the units, probably 90% Holey.
      I have personally noticed s drivability increase with the Holley, but that is more of a personal preference as it can't be proven other then by the seat of your pants.
      That said, as Pete mentioned, 95% of the time people that have issues is because of user error. Main one is set up. No matter how much we try a lot of people can't tune a car correctly anyways so then you add in something that is arguably more complicated (more steps really) and you'll exaggerate the issues. I have seen RUclips videos of people complaining while the handheld is displaying data that is out of parameters. probably because those parameters (usually map or tps) is on page 3 or 4. Add in using a efi controlled initiation (timing) and you can see the main issues. many people can't believe it's them.... etc.
      If you go with the system, have a good engine to mount it on, you should be fine. I have run the small 2g two barrel sniper on older 327's and ford 302's that are in good shape and saw 5-8 mpg increase and great response compared, PLUS you can travel with out the carb fowling as your altitude changes.
      The old funny stories about some teenager with his Camaro built to the hill with a huge cam, 11:1 compression, aluminum intake, hump heads, roller rockers, headers (big deal back in the day) with his 850 double pumper getting smoked by the guy in his square body with a basically stock SBC with a rv cam and a nice 650 with vacuum secondary's. Why? Because the guy can tune it so the engine runs efficiently. Same as dyno tune versus street tune. etc. etc.
      Any time people reference timing like there is a special number that all engines must use is wrong. Just using a vacuum gauge for adjusting a card is not 100%, etc.

      @@Nowayjose-z2r i agree with everything you said, and i am impressed by these new plug-n-play EFI systems. But at my age, (74) i'm one of those die hard old school teenagers, currently putting a 406 sbc in my Vega. It has just over 500 hp, and still street friendly. Solid cam, tunnel ram, aluminum heads, etc. I could have built it with more hp, or less, but its the way i wanted it. I'll race it on weekends, and drive it during the week. Now, having said that, after about a year or so i will try one of the new EFI systems and see how it compares to the tunnel ram, especially since the EFI systems will support 500 hp and more.

    I have a 350 TPI motor that I want to refresh before I put it back in my Bel Air... since my grandpa passed away I have no idea whether it’s a stock motor or has any modifications to the block, pistons, cam, valvetrain, or heads. I think it may be best to build it so I know exactly what specs the motor is built to. Do you think that is a good idea or do you think it may be unnecessary since the motor came out running and wasn’t opened once it was out of the car? Also, do you recommend keeping the TPI or should I modernize it with the Sniper EFI? Thank you, and I have enjoyed every video of this series!

    • @PetesGarage
      @PetesGarage  3 года назад +1

      If it ran coming out and is not leaking, why rebuild it unless you know it has tons of miles or a mechanical issue. A Sniper would bolt right on, you just need to add an electric fuel pump

  • @stevelindsay3643

    Hi Pete. awesome SBC 350.
    I'm not sure if you remember but I'm rebuilding my 1935 Chevy Pickup Street Strip Rod.
    My knowledge base is from the 1970s. I had some pretty good runners back then.
    I've already built a 406 SBC for the 35 and have another prepped block waiting in the wings. I'm guessing it's around 450, maybe 500 hp about the same foot-pounds of torque on the high end I think I could squeak that out of it.
    I'm thinking about a better set-up but want to keep it simple staying away from computers, etc.
    There is so much more out there now to get my head around compared to my glory days but I still, want to use as little electronics as I can possibly get away with.
    We would use a Battery, one wire alternator, HEI distributor. It was that simple. Or dual point distributor
    That Said. What would you suggest as an intake fuel distribution and ignition that keeps it simple without computers except for an MSD box? I'm not against that, but I want to follow my plan for this hot rod which I guess would be classifier retro.
    I'm a bit old tech when it comes to making things put out power effectively and as simply as possible, plus all this new stuff is very intimidating.
    Is there something I should look at Pete that would be a step up from my way of doing things that steer away from computers I can wire up easily. MDS Crank trigger etc I have no issue with, but the 35 Chevy is bare-bones and I would like to keep it that way. The MSD Ready to run seems like a possibility
    I hope that's not a frustrating question. If anyone has the answer without trying to sell what I don't want it would be you.
    Thanks, Pete, no rush, to reply, just going through the possibilities

    • @PetesGarage
      @PetesGarage  4 года назад

      Sure I remember. You can easily use a good carb, maybe a Quick Fuel and use a distributor with a pertronix unit with a coil. It just replaces the points and drops right in. Really simple stuff, easy instructions.

      @@PetesGarage I knew you would give it to me straight. I had asked others and all I got was combinations of possibilities. I was thinking this would be the easiest and best performing for my simple set up. Thanks, Pete. Awesome to have you there to ask.

    Hi Pete; I have a 1969 BB 4speed vette (L36 the 390hp) ( got a nice cam on it, pistons, headers and it made 430hp/480tq at the crank ). Im thinking on getting the "holley sniper efi quadrajet system). Im sick of my quadrajet; Im not a mechanic myself and mechanics in my country aren't that great.I want power and reliability. Im definitely not getting neither with my carb bc I can never make it work right. I want to forget about adjustment and timing. what is your opinion on these systems ? pros and cons ? would the engine sun smoother? better throttle response ? bye-bye gas smell ? good power? Thank you

      This one has a hydraulic roller so there was no need to break it in. If it was a solid, flat tappet not broken in it would no last very long.

  • @BigSniper9703
    @BigSniper9703 3 года назад

    Was that a flat tappet block? I heard all you need to convert to roller lifters is a link bar between the lifters themselves? Is there really all that much of a difference between roller parts and flat tappet non roller parts/installation?

    Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they even want to slow down all the gas pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime. "Bundesabgasbespaßungsverbot" in German...!
