Installing DOS 7.1 on a Netbook

- When having the Windows version of DOS just won't do...
Why do I do this to myself?
Yeah I made a lot of mistakes and didn't figure out half the stuff I did in a similar video. Enjoy a long, if unproductive, video.
The last thing I’d expect from a dos installer is a GPL notice. That was interesting.
That VirtualBox expert mode… I died… It's exactly the same thing as in normal mode but on one screen. pacefalm
hey you know it's bad when a netbook actually takes a sata drive they don't do that anymore
Our Lord Druaga1 has uploaded a video
hallowed be thy ssd
finaly lol
and i heard the xserve's fans spinning :D
Weed
Wtf, why did my comment get so popular?
Every time I watch you do videos like this, I realize that you are my spirit animal. These videos hit way close to home lol
Watching these videos always brightens my mood, especially after having comparatively minor issues installing an OS. It's like watching just how bad it can be.
38:11 Tries to install DOS on a drive with the GPT partition table. Good job Druaga1, good job.
Oh this is great, a classic episode of druaga can’t catch a break
Danger Close this is from today
I know, I mean like it's a classic drauga video in that he's just having so many problems lol
Knowing DOS, this was frustrating to watch, lol. Quick way: boot up Win 98SE installer into command prompt, fdisk, delete old partitions on hard drive, create new partition, make active, then reboot back to Win98SE installer command prompt. Format C: /s, mk WIN98CD, xcopy /e D:\ C:\WIN98CD, reboot to HDD, CD WIN98SE, setup /is
I like how he is borderline insane at the end of the video
"borderline"
"like"
You must be new here lol
*fdisk* while I've not tried it, I know his fury towards all the problems.
Thomas Wall LOL 😂 that was my first thought too... Because Druaga1 has been out of his mind (as far as I can tell) from the beginning; that is the beauty that is his channel and the man himself! So interesting and enjoyable to watch him punish himself in damn-near every video.
I mean, yeah, of course he could do in-depth research prior-to every video, but... If everything went smoothly and according to plan every single time, what would be the fun in that?
"You know shit's gone bad... When you have to use Linux to do this." :D
Midge Sinnaeve Linux > everything!
8:24
C:\Cunthis A:\
Yes! I saw that too :p
If anyone wants the song at 23:00 it's:
Chris Stanton - A Perfect Hero
This... was just as complicated as I expected it to be!
Just watching a Druaga1 video when I get earblasted with "IAMASUPERHEROLIKEAWARRIORNOWINACTION"
I was just listening to that in my car before I came home and immediately went to this video.
we have been blessed with a 52min smoking session
I love these videos. you do the simplest tasks the most unnecessarily complicated ways possible lol I do want to yell what you are doing wrong the whole time though
Only Druaga1 could turn this task into an hour long video...
Linux saves the day.
That little 420 on that phone lol
Favourite of all your videos. I admire your dedication to the task!
Who installs DOS with an installer?
XCOPY D:\DOS C:\DOS
SYS D: C:
If SYS don't work, copy the boot sector using dd from a Linux or BSD live CD and recreate the exact same partition layout. Deleting partitions and recreating them doesn't delete filesystem data.
Commands like deltree and xcopy are actually separate DOS programs and usually reside in the DOS folder. As long as this DOS folder is in the environment path, you can use them anywhere.
It's possible that when you went to D:\ (and perhaps did something we didn't see?) they were no longer in the path and therefore you cannot use it
He deleted the WINDOWS folder.
This video reminds me why I became a Linux user.
Well, it shouldn't. Druaga has his own way of making simple things extraordinary complicated.
To add further to what SandyStarchild said, if you forgot sudo on a command, typing "sudo !!" repeats the last command with "sudo" in front of it.
In your video, I learned many pointless things about everything but installing msdos the normal way. Cool.
Druaga1s hour long DOS-based descent into madness.
I like the highspeed "Fucks"
Boot win98 CD-ROM
Command line option
Format c: /s
This copies system files to make it bootable.
Boot hard disk
Copy files from flash drive to C:
Run setup from C:
Why didn't you use freeDOS? It supports all of your stuff natively
Man, this video is a master class in how to do things the hardest way possible. Then again, it wouldn't be much of a druaga video if he didn't end up doing something stupidly complicated in order to accomplish something very simple. Who else would even think of mounting a disk through into VirtualBox on Linux in order to install DOS on it? I can only think of one person, lol
Me when druaga1 uploads a video: OMG HOLY SHIT!!! THE DRUAGA1 UPLOADED A VIDEO!!! LETS WATCH IT!!!
Ahh, a good old fashioned stumblefuck of an os install. It feels like slipping into a warm bath.
I savior Druaga's video's for the morning. He doesn't scream like a little girl the entire length of the video!
+ morning rep, hehe
That sped up eurobeat tho
IAMASUPEHERO
Must be one of the best videos you've made.
You should be able to make the drive bootable after running the installer from your dos boot usb by using the SYS command, eg SYS C:. Some other options of the program may also be useful.
After having one hell of a December this video is fucking magic.
LOL this dude cracks me up at times
I know so many people that take the long way home.. LOL
That ending though. He sounded dead inside
Truly entertaining vid Druaga1.
And very informative of course.
Duraga1, have you ever heard of the /s option to the format DOS command? I would approach it this way fdisk also has the /mbr command to rewrite the MBR of the disk. So I would boot the netbook off the CDROM then fdisk /mbr, use fdisk to make sure the partition is active and then format c: /s
you know shit gotten bad when you have to use Linux... Druga1 -2017
fdisk -> delete all partitions then create new partition
reboot
format d: /quick /s
I love Druaga1 Videos. They make me feel very tech-competent.
41:06 base memory 32MB, haha... But in DOS-Times. that would have been enormous...
Always good to have a Linux based Operating System around 😀.
Druaga, I’ve installed Windows 98 from usb so many times (bad cdrom prevented normal install). All you had to do was set the temporary directory onto the D: drive to get past that error, I’m pretty sure the operator is /t.
papa druaga
*banjamin* papa Almost-Loses-His-Shit
How to do this successfully:
1. Install DOS 7.10 on a VM
2. Make sure the VM has USB support
3. Launch Rescuezilla in safe mode
4. Create backup of VM hard drive and put it on USB
5. Launch Rescuezilla on the computer that you want to put DOS on, in safe mode.
6. Restore the computer using the backup, and boom!
"A Perfect Hero" at 23:00 and 31:34 ?
I see you're a man of culture as well
Oh lovely bit of speed techno!
Your magical commands are format c: /s or sys c: depending on whether you want to format the drive or just make dos bootable. You can then copy all the other files over from your flash drive to get himem and other drivers to install Windows 98 or MS-DOS 7.1. I know these things because I wrote a 40 page manual on MS-DOS 7.1 for a school project. I am 13.
Replace C: with whatever your fixed disk is.
or > sys c: d:
Honestly, If I wanted to make this a car media machine, I would install CLI Linux and use that instead. Should've been easier than this.
Good video though.
If you are just going to be using it to run one DOS program, you don't need a full install of DOS. You literally only need to format the drive and add the system files "format c: /s". That makes the drive bootable. Then copy the program you want onto there and run that program with an autoexec.bat file.
To install Windows 9x on a PC with no floppy nor CD-ROM:
1. Boot from the USB drive with DOS
2. FDISK and FORMAT your HDD
3. Copy the contents of the Win9x CD-ROM from your thumb drive to the HDD
4. Use SYS to copy DOS system files to your HDD and to make it booteable
5. Reboot and unplug the thumb drive to boot from the HDD
6. Start the Win9x setup from the hard drive
FYI: In Terminal, press Ctrl+A to skip to the beginning of the line, Ctrl+E to go to the end, and Option+Left arrow or right arrow to skip the cursor between words. Goes much faster than holding down the arrow :) this also applies to filenames, textboxes, etc.
Keep on the long videos, lob ya bro.
Also 160 yay.
Finally a long video
Gotta love that Eurobeat!
when god shows up in your notification feed
This videos give me life.
Honest question, why do this as opposed to just using a phone or an iPod? You've already put a 120GB SSD in a gen 4 iPod which runs RockBox and therefore supports FLAC. Why use the netbook which needs boot time and is less portable?
I'd legit have a music station like this if external dac amps were supported.
Why not FreeDOS?
Incompatible with the mpxplay... Mine doesnt even open it with freedos...
Because that would be simple
Odd, FreeDOS COMES WITH mpxplay, I've gotten it to run in FreeDOS, MSDOS, DR-DOS and DOSBOX
or the weedOS made from scratch? yes i know it probably wont work.
The last versions of DOS were released under GPL licenses.
14:06 That's the first time I see Win98 get a driver for something.
I enjoyed every bit of this video
lol awh man you made it so frustratingly hard for yourself :p
Boot from a usb floppy disk next time, fdisk and format the drive, type sys a: c:, hit enter and you should find it a lot easier :)
Great vids as always
In this video, druaga1 gets a mental breakdown trying to make a dos pc work.
Why not use DOS 4.2.0?
Because compatibility with FAT32 and Harddisks bigger than 2GB.
I get the pun.
This is an amazing thing to come home to see :D
Dear Druaga1, you own a driver Licence. Now I know everythink in this Universe is possible! Thank You :)
Say me please, what's font used on DOS 7.1 & BSoD Win98?
why is the Xserve choking on air in the background?
Did someone advise already.... but the good stuff is in c:\windows\command and needs copying.
Would an SSD even do anything for a text based operating system?
wasn't there something special about the bios on the cash register if i remember right
I really like this style of video, keep it up!
save SSDs for another project??? you meant "Druaga First Smoke Part 1" on VHSSD?? btw I miss those videos made on the carpet
I love your videos so much druaga. The're Great!
This video is my life of OS installations with my Compaq Armada 4120 :3
Man, why DOS? Why not modern Linux with commandshell only? Or even fluxbox?
"History is doomed to repeat itself"
Aww windows 98... I always used fdisk to format and make a bootable partition, then boot, copy the contents of 98 to the hard disk then ran setup from the copy on the hdd. So many memories!
Could it be that Windows 98 can't use more then 124 GB?
Yeah! MS-DOS on a Netbook! U rock!
You should use */p j* with Win98 setup.exe (undocumented flag) to force it to install as ACPI mode. It has some weird heuristic to detect ACPI that fails on newer machines. Otherwise it’ll use an idle loop which means CPU will always be at 100% usage. Don’t think it makes a difference in DOS though, only Windows.
hint: dos7.1's MPXPlay can be ran from any directory
Hey, what model of notebook is that? I’d love to try this out myself.
Ah, CDU DOS 7.1. Curious beast it is - actually essentially just a really heavily hacked up version of Windows 95B's DOS code, iirc.
nice
Another question: Why not just install some Linux in command line mode and have it run a cli music player like ncmpcpp or something? DOS might be (arguably) faster at booting (though apparently Linux can be just as fast when pared down) but Linux would Just Work (TM) and take a lot less headache to get set up, not to mention the modern hardware compatibility.
Becuase Druaga1. That's why.
You know, I thought for once that everything was gonna go right, and it was. But of course, it's Druaga so something(s) had to go wrong.
I love your videos, and it brings out the most obnoxious backseat user out of me. Def a future tl;dw. Let your freak flag fly, baby. No apologies.
48:20 - Sounds like Rick Sanchez throwing a tantrum
dam man. Playing eurobeat when speeding things up
I hear the Xserve in the background I think
Just did this with my old gateway 2000 p5-90 works great for playing my tunes
9:33 lol "I think it ded"
So how do you get dos 7.1? I thought it was never released and you just had to get to it by installing windows and changing a config? But you obviously have a setup and stuff aswel.. .how?! Please tell me how???
There are setup files you can find online. Google is your friend. DOS 7.1 was released standalone in China.
What's that sped-up Darude - Sandstorm's name?
I have a Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing 8 program that opens up Dosbox with a Windows 3.1 System. However, it possible to change the system from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95/98
