- In this episode, I disassemble the ZF5 S47 4x4 transmission that I sourced for Project Brutus, our 1987 F350 crew cab diesel dually field find project truck. Once apart, I'll source any necessary spare parts and rebuild it. The rebuild video is posted here, too, of course.

Out of every video this was the most straight forward way to approach this transmission single handed and without too many of the special tools. This understanding is what a DIY person is looking for. Thank you for your videos. I am sad to not see more on Brutus. I have a truck very similar.
Glad you liked the video! I miss Brutus, too, but check out Project Brownie! That's our 1991 F350 crew cab 7.3 IDI, ZF5 dually project truck!
Not a transmission expert here but from what I could see of the disassembly things looked clean and tight. I'm glad you found one that wasn't cracked!
Michael - I was quite pleased with the internals! However, the extension housing was indeed cracked; if you check out the video I posted a few weeks ago, you'll see the details. More to follow on that! thanks for the comment, Scott
What an amazing video! Sound was good so I could hear you. Easy explanation of what to do. Made my job super easy! Thanks for taking the time to share.
Thanks for the feedback, and glad you found the video helpful! Scott
Awesome video, thanks!
The machined surface on the concrete drives my OCD into overdrive! lol
Glad you liked the video! Thanks, Scott
I am watching this tutorial as I disassemble mine. Thankyou sir
Glad you found it helpful! Don't forget to check out the reassembly video when you get to that point. Scott
These videos are awesome. I am in the process of swapping the C6/BW1345/D44HD TTB out of my 1986 F250, and swapping in a Zf5/BW1356PTO/KPD60 in from my 1988 F350. Since the F250 is a restoration project, these videos are great as far as a how to, with torque specs, and great information. I’ll definitely be sending these videos to people as they need them. Great production, camera angles, and of course mechanical knowledge!
Thanks for your comments, Noah! Glad you find these helpful! Scott
Thanks for making this video. I just destroyed my ZF5 behind my turbo EFI460 truck at 18psi of boost which put down 840whp and 1200wtq. I knew I was pushing my luck but it lasted a long time.
Yikes! That's some serious power, even for a BBF with a snail!
@@THEBULLETPROOFGARAGE yes sir! It's far from stock though. Forged pistons, h beam rods, ARP bolts, bigger cam, ported heads with bigger valves, runs on e85 with LS coils on each plug, etc. It's a monster, truck weighs 5600#'s.
@@johnvirgilsgarage - what a beast of a truck!
That’s 4r100 territory.
You're a total badass.
Thanks!
Note to all… be careful about using pullers on the gear faces. Don’t pull on the fine tooth ring. Those are the engagement teeth and aren’t intended to be pulled on. They can be damaged easily. Find another way.
Thanks for the input. Scott
This was incredibly helpful. Thank you!
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks, Scott
I’ve been waiting!! I look at your channel 2 days ago and was sad because I didn’t see a new video. I’m definitely happy again!
Hi Caleb - I know, it's been a while! I have several more in the works; I hope to post another one this weekend. Thanks for the comment! Scott
Like waiting for Yellowstone come Sunday.
@@GDW65155 I don't know if I'm in quite the same league as Yellowstone, but thanks for the comment! Scott
@@THEBULLETPROOFGARAGE you’re the Yellowstone of OBS builds!
@@caleblee4856 Thanks!!!
Love your transmission rebuild videos. I have a ZF S5-42 that I will be rebuilding myself thanks to you giving me confidence I can do it! Also appreciate you not swearing on these videos, and you keep your cool! Its fun watching you work through problems.
Thanks, Jacob! Glad you find the videos helpful. Scott
Fantastic work Scott! You did a great job showing a step by step detailed disassembly, but also info between the S5-42 and S5-47 is very helpful info too. Once again you’ve shown that using the right tool for the job not only makes life easier, but also makes a project like yours not too overwhelming. Looking forward to the next video. Take care👍
Hey YDOC Productions - thanks for checking in again, and really appreciate the feedback!!! More content is on the way!!! Scott
thank you for showing your frustration with 2nd gear, now dealing with the same situation not much to grab and its on tight!
Yeah, it fought me for a while before it came off!
Great video! I put a ZF5 into my '85 Bronco about 4 years ago, and attempted to rebuild the transmission myself. However, after taking the gearsets out, I couldn't get enough information on how to properly do it and get the gears pulled off, so I took the parts to a transmission shop and had them rebuild it.
If I had had your detailed video, I definitely would have done the task myself!
Hi Justin -- It's a shame Ford didn't use the ZF5 in the Bronco, isn't it? Anyway, thanks for the input. Scott
@@THEBULLETPROOFGARAGE Agreed! I never understood that either. If you have the 5 speed that came in the Bronco (the Mazda M5OD-R2), it's a 100% direct swap. All they had to do was offer it.
For a rugged off-roader, having the granny low combined with the overdrive is the best of everything. It would have been perfect for the Bronco.
@@milesaway1980 - a 7.3 IDI would have been nice, too! Know of several folks who have done this swap as well!
@@THEBULLETPROOFGARAGE Same, I know a few of those guys. I love the 300 six in mine though. Great motor for off-roading, etc, especially with some good power adders!
@@milesaway1980 Agreed! If you're going to run a "buzzing half-dozen" it's hard to beat a 300.
Scott, really am enjoying this series you have created building Brutus! Keep up the good work and the great content. Already looking forward to your next episode!
Hey Mr. Breeze - thanks for the kind words! More content on the way!!! Scott
@@THEBULLETPROOFGARAGE I have been following your threads over on GJ. Always impressed with your skills and how you find time to do these projects when you are located away from your home base.
@@mrbreeze5556 - thanks for checking in! Lots of Garage Journal folks here, and I really appreciate it! Not a lot of fun working on projects with only about 1/2 of my tools, but still beats the hell out of the pathetic set of tools I had when I started turning wrenches several decades ago! Scott
Great instructional video! Thanks for sharing! Merry Christmas! 👍👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thanks, Simple Man! Glad you found it informative. Merry Christmas to you and yours, Scott
Great video! I always appreciate your uploads. I am also looking to do a zf5 swap on my truck, and this Brutus series has been excellent! Keep up the good work can't wait until your channel winds up blowing up; I can see it on the horizon.
Glad you found it interesting, Pingwuan! More ZF-5 content to follow! Almost forgot - I hope the channel blows up, too! Thanks for the comment, Scott
Great video thank you so very much!!! You make it look so easy and explain so well!!!!! I have always avoided rebuilding transmission's may take on one of these good ones are so expensive and there's a lot out there that need rebuilt also are there any ways to make the transmission stronger? Thank you again!!!!!
Glad you found it helpful. Don't forget to check out my reassembly video, too. Scott

@@stevenoe6395 Excellent.
Great vid Scott!
Thanks Liv!!!
Do you have any recommendations for getting a rebuild kit, clutch, and dmf or smf? I have heard good things about the Luk and Southbend smf and clutch’s but no experience with them. Thank you so much for the video either way, I think I’ll be able to handle the job and finally justify buying an impact 🫡🙏🏼
I went with Luk, SMF. Folks like Southbend, too. Scott
Great upload!
Glad you enjoyed it! Scott
Hey Scott, you definitely have a way with making videos. Not only the knowledge you have but also the way you get right down to it, no BS, yet you also keep it interesting. I feel like you would be a great shop teacher. On a side note, do you still have the PTO and pump? I need a PTO and pump for ZF5-47 I’m putting in my 97 F350.
Hi Mopargssr - Thanks for the kind words! I really appreciate it. You're a few months too late on the PTO and pump; got those sold right after I removed them. Thanks, Scott
Hello! Help me figure out the calculation of revolutions on the power take-off gear. Gearbox ZF s5-42 (5.72). In order to choose the right KOM and hydraulic pump, I need to know the number of revolutions that the power take-off gear makes. It is located on the intermediate shaft. It has 45 teeth on a gear ratio of 5.72 and 43 teeth on a gear ratio of 4.65. Do I understand correctly that it engages with the primary shaft, with that part of it on which there are 27 teeth on the gear ratio 5.72 and 29 teeth on the gear ratio 4.65? Then at 1000 revolutions of the motor it will have 600 revolutions at the gear ratio of 5.72 and 670 revolutions at the gear ratio of 4.65? or not? Thanks!
Sorry, but I do not know. Best place to answer a tech question like this would be the folks on the Facebook ZF5 group. Good luck, Scott
@@THEBULLETPROOFGARAGE thanks 👍
Very instructive. One problem, cannot find rebuild/ reassembly video. Why not? I am halfway through my project and now what? Help me out.
Jason - I got hung up waiting on parts. Reassembly video is still probably a few weeks out. Thanks, Scott
Great video, I have an e40d in my 7.3 idi f250 that needs to be rebuilt. I'm not blessed enough to have the zf5 or the money to swap it. Just out of curiosity what is it you plan to tow with your truck? I only have a 3000 lb boat to tow and the occasional lawn tractor or truck bed of mulch for the gardens so my transmission is gonna live an easy life lol.
Old Soul Garage - I mostly tow car trailers with project cars. Nothing super heavy, just an 18' car hauler with a 5,000 pound car. I could get by with less truck (SRW, regular cab, and gas engine) but I've always wanted a crew cab diesel dually, so here we are! BTW - I started on the 7.3 rebuild; content is coming up!!! Thanks for the comment, Scott
Nice detailed video Scott. I need your toolset!
You need MY toolset!?!? No problem! Just drop off the Fairlane sedan and it's a deal!!!
Hey! Im doing a rebuild as we speak on one of these. Im in a time crunch and have been trying to figure out acquiring shims for the preload. All my local transmission shops dont have any and when i inquire about potential diff carrier or pinion shims for a substitute, im left with more questions than answers. Ive seen legend of such a thing but cant find dimensions on the diff shims. Have you found any leads on this issue, or even have this issue? If all else fails i may just make some custom shims out of sheet metal or soda cans or order some that are close enough from mcmaster-carr. Thanks in advance!
Hey Kenneth - I have only found one place that sells the shims - torqueking.com/product/20984/qu20984-zf-5-speed-shim-kit/ - they're not cheap, but I guess it's a supply and demand thing. Good luck! Scott
@@THEBULLETPROOFGARAGE yeah ive seen this place, thats where i got the yoke nut actually! Like 40 bucks hahaha, quite steep. The price doesnt bother me so much as the fact that theyre on backorder since ive been looking. Were you able to purchase yours and finish your rebuild? If so, maybe i could purchase your remaining shims?
@@kennethcravens125 - I have a set but I haven't finished reassembly yet. Check with me in a few weeks; I should have some left over. Have you mocked yours up yet to see what shim thickness you will need? Scott
@@THEBULLETPROOFGARAGE no not yet, thatll be for today hopefully. Ill probably have to find another source then because i need to be done by this weekend.
@@kennethcravens125 - Ok, good luck! Scott
Nice work! When is the reassembly video coming?
Soon! I actually installed the trans in the truck yesterday, so it's all back together. Need to post the next video on the 7.3 IDI build and this one will be next, so probably about 2 weeks. Thanks for the question. Scott
@@THEBULLETPROOFGARAGE Great timing! I will be rebuilding a '89 zf S5-42 this summer, so it'll be interesting to see your process 👍

Am I the only one who seen the fox at 1:17?
I saw it, but I'm not sure anyone else commented! Scott
Fox runs across the background in the upper left by the woodpile at 1:08. 🙂
Yep! I saw that too. Surprised it took someone so long to comment on it!
I kinda hate my zf5. Shifts like a truck trans. Have to match the rpms to the speed.
Well, if it grinds otherwise, might be time for new synchronizers.
