Tom Waits is one of my favourite writers. The album Swordfish Trombones is my go-to. I'm especially fond of his work that has guitarist Marc Ribot on it.
Here's a few of his songs to consider. "Ol' 55" is a song of his that was covered by the Eagles. "I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love with You" is about wistfully looking across a bar room at someone. "San Diego Serenade" is about not appreciating what you have. "The Heart of Saturday Night" is about living for the weekend.
Boy, the sound of that piano really sets that bluesy tone. He actually has that Louie Armstrong sound to his voice, woah! Caught my attention with the first few notes played, then that voice! What a storytelling song this one is. Thank you, Saeed, for this one. ❤😊
Love Tom Waits-- hard to pick a favorite, so I'll suggest two: Eggs and Sausage, and On a Foggy Night. Both are from Nighthawks at the Diner album-- it's excellent all the way through. May I also suggest checking out Ricki Lee Jones (they were a couple around that era), she's incredible in her own right: Danny's All Star Joint, and her hit, Chuck E's In Love, are good introductions. I appriciate your broad exploration of music!
Tom Waits is truly the patron saint of lost souls. He never looks down at them and just tells their sad stories to humanize them and us in the process. Try “On The Nickel” to hear about all the little boys who never combed their hair.
Tom Traubert's Blues is one of his most popular songs, covered by Rod Stewart and lots of others. The lyrics are very poetic, you should give it a listen. Other great songs by Waits: Martha, Innocent When You Dream, Ol' 55, Hell Broke Luce, Chocolate Jesus, (Looking For) The Heart Of Saturday Night, Jersey Girl, Singapore, Rain Dogs, 9th & Hennepin, Hang Down Your Head, Time, Gun Street Girl, Frank's Wild Years, Closing Time, Grapefruit Moon, Underground, Shore Leave, What's He Building?, Way Down In The Hole and I Don't Wanna Grow Up
You are going to be enthralled by his writing. You must react to Step Right Up. Also, as you're a cinephile, have you seen the neo-beat noir film Down By Law? stars John Lurie, Roberto Benigni , and Tom Waits. Cult Classic directed by Jim Jarmusch. So many incredible albums and songs by Tom Waits.
Waits is a really good actor. He's also great as the gold digger in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs by the Coen Brothers, and as Renfield in Bram Stoker's Dracula.
@@SaeedReacts. Roberto Benigni won Oscar for Best actor in Life Is Beautiful (also must watch ) and Down By Law was first American Film and it’s so often quoted. Tom makes me happy...my favourite artist though i hot into him from through the utterly brilliant bone machine album so was starting from the island/anti albums which are more strange but have literally every album and they are all just glorious poetic beautiful funny dark yet extremely human creations
Apart from "Way Down In The Hole", it's great that you met Tom Waits! (By the way, 'The Wire' is the best TV series ever.) They were two very different songs that showed different sides of him. He's a brave man. You are faced with not only a great storyteller, but one of the greatest bards of all time. We should enjoy him, there will never be anyone like Tom Waits again.
I adore Tom Waits. My older sister *tried* to introduce me to his music when I was in high school, but my brain was *not* ready. It's been scientifically proven that your brain is almost pre-conditioned to recognize certain chord progressions and melodies, and anything outside of that, your brain needs to rewire itself to accept anything different. Waits was like that for me. But once my brain got on board, it was a love story from then on. Check out his album "Rain Dogs." There isn't a single bad track (although finding a bad Tom Waits track anywhere is pretty fucking hard).

Blue Valentine is one of my favorite albums from Waits, it highlights his bluesy/jazzy period. Great great album. Try Romeo is Bleeding next

A solid gold album from start to finish. Every song perfect in its own way.
Tom Waits is the best storyteller, ever.
Do yourself a favor and listen to “Big Joe and Phantom 309.”

More Tom Waits! Lots, lots more!!!
Can hear Joe Cocker singing this song. Very similar voices
Great ending 👌🏻👌🏻
I love how every line in the song is melodic, except for "to pay this lawyer", because that just ain't a song, man. He just says it.
Tom waits - Blue Valentines
That's him on piano.
