Excellent problem solving! Those long tube headers looked amazing! Huge shout out to Dynovox. Maybe a set of heads is needed to get those bad-boys to work. hint hint..
That’s awesome of Dynovox to reach out and send those long tubes out to you for this project. I hope everyone here will send them some love in return. Dimpling the tubes have very little effect on performance. Most headers have some for bolt/spark plug clearance anyway.
Awww...yeah... Hammer time! Nice! You cited the very same Motor Trend video I was thinking about when you busted out the hammer. What a huge sigh of relief! I sincerely hope you can return the headers that didn't work. Those stainless steel ones would make great wall art though... Take care and much aloha to you.
Hey Angel! I’m glad you went with shorty headers. I think once the scrapstang is on the ground, those long tubes would drag on speed bumps and stuff. So good call! And as to peening in the primaries for spark plug clearance, it’s not all that unusual. REF in Kingman AZ built my 8 into 1 on my 65 Mustang from scratch. I found spots on my new headers where a circle was drawn, and the notation “ BAP!” where they were peened in. Made me laugh, but that’s how the pros do it. Keep that content coming. Cheers!
Great work! That 2nd one I was yelling at the screen "You have to go from up underneath!" lol. You were smart to ditch your shock towers, we will be attempting long tube headers as well with 289, C4 trans, power steering and shock towers later this week.
The shorty spark plug was created specifically for GT40P heads used on 5.0 Explorers. NGK, Autolite, etc all make the shorty plugs, and for 1/5th the price of the Accel plugs.
Warm wishes from an Aussie in Thailand. A fan of SarahNtuned and yours from her channel and come across on yur shyte build. Down to earth, not loud and overbearing. Sensible.. Except when you buy 4 sets of headers. Another Aussie home built car channel is “Home built by Jeff”.. A firefighter turned car guy. He does a lot of fabrication in his builds. He’d have cut and rewelded plates vs using the hammer.. A cleaner planned out solution. Check his very recent stuff out and you will see what I mean. Anyway, love your work. Keep it up.
You can weld stainless steel with your MiG welder. That’s how I welded mine. I have the same long tube headers on my 67. Of course I’m not running the GT40 heads. I’m running E7 heads with 1.94 and 1.60 valves that are heavily ported. Car runs in the 12’s in the quarter mile
I worked/ran a custom exhaust shop for more than 20 years. I intalled literally 100s of set of headers. From cheap Chinese specials to top of the line American made. If I had to guess, 80% of them needed some type of "alteration." Yep, beat them with a hammer. Even building your own has fitment limitations. Never enough room on stock vehicles. Some race cars are even worse depending on the chassis work and engine location. But I still really enjoyed doing it.
Dude, old school fix. Find 2 header flanges and put them under the headers between the head and header flange with the tubes. Move the header out enough to clear the plunges.
counting the spark plugs at the end, i thought you were going to channel some Count from Sesame Street! "six, seven, EIGHT SPARK PLUGS - AH AH AHHH" lol
Angel, hammers are heat treated. By hitting one with another, you risk something bad happening. Be careful! All of us with those heads have some stories to tell. I have used 3 brands of block huggers. Most are copies of one that didn't fit well. I have one short Accell plug to get by. :)
This is why I’d rather get the GT40 heads. The P heads do make a little more power but I’m not dealing with the header fitment issues. This video will help a lot of people though. Keep up the good work!!!
Hi Angel too bad those long tubes wouldn’t fit. Those look like the best set to use look easiest to make the rest of your exhaust system with. Could even just go straight pipe to the back of the stang. Don’t know if that would be quiet enough but hey everyone would know when you were coming! Stay cool
As cheap as I am, I think I would've sold the GT40 heads and put the money towards a set of budget aluminum heads like the SVE. My soul hurt when you beat on those headers.

I agree!! 😈

Every rotrodder every has dimpled a set of headers. You're in good company!
Angel.... good job.... Lets hear it grumble!!

Mac shorty headers seller here, glad to see the headers getting put to use

5:53.........Your version of a Dr. Evil laugh cracked me up.......success!!
Thanks Gary!😂😂😂😂
Loved that moment; jack the Jack, and then step on it. I tower above you at 5/6 and 7/8th; yet I too use this technique. Keep up the good work.

That giggle at 5:51... priceless! I felt that one :D
😂😂

ummm a 1/2" shim under the long tubes and 2 gaskets on the driver side?

Time to dimple them pretty headers
Dude, old school fix. Find 2 header flanges and put them under the headers between the head and header flange with the tubes. Move the header out enough to clear the plunges.
Way to clearance! Might still need some high temp, 90 degree / elbowed, wire boots.
Agreed!
counting the spark plugs at the end, i thought you were going to channel some Count from Sesame Street! "six, seven, EIGHT SPARK PLUGS - AH AH AHHH" lol
I picked up the whole gt40p exhaust setup from JBA. Not equal length, but popped right on and sounds great.
Smart use of that steel C-channel.
The main reason I did not consider P-heads, Went with AFR heads instead because of spark plug issues......
Yes! My main reason was budget..😂
They make short spark plugs for this reason I run them on my car
If you get a set of Remflex or similar graphite exhaust header gaskets it will give you another .125 of clearance, and no leaks.
I will look into that thanks!!
@@rookie__pilot You're welcome. DEI makes a lot of neat heat control products as well. I used some of their stuff in my LS 240SX build.

GET SARAH TO GO ON YOUR CHANNEL!.... GOOD JOB!

I agree!
Ebay or flash shark has some that work with p heads. You can use ls swap headers and change the flange. Accel shorty plugs

Awesome
Yes
Great video.
As painful as it was, I think it was the right solution.
Put your set on reverse and upside-down out the top of the fenders you love to dent? then it could be a horned-scrapstang...
Reminds me of the time I put a SB 400 in a s10 pickup :)
I use heatshieldproducts sparkplugboots and they touch my tri y headers but still holding up with 4000 miles on the engine and sparkplugboots also
What if you cut the flanges off the crappiest set of headers, and use that for a spacer? That might get enough clearance
Why not buy the correct headers for those heads and save a ton of headaches? Sanderson makes a very nice fitting shorty header for 1st gen mustangs.
One short, one long? lol you could use the shortys that fit the driver's side and the long tube on the passenger side 😅
Accel shorty plugs.
Just start mentioning tig welder in every video you’ll probably get one sent to you
Right 😂
Can you add a spacer between the header and the face of the head to increase the pipe-to-spark-plug distance?
Why couldn’t you mix match the headers one fit the left and one fit the right,it is a scrap stang 👍🏻👍🏻
You got a point 😂
Ha! I had the same thought.
👍👍👍
I suggested these plugs a ton of times i run them on my camaro not sure why they are so expensive for you. They cost me about $75 for 8
Crazy right! Maybe its the Accel brand specifically
Say? I'm just woundering if you took into account...the steering linking? And how it's going to be able to pass them headers?
Haha….. i have yet to figure that out but we’ll work around it hopefully 😂
I sure hope so...cus it may couse a bit of a headache...
👊👍
🤘🏼🤘🏼
Damn.... I was just about to suggest you buy 6 more sets of headers......
6 WHY 6 😂
Why not use header spark plugs accel makes them... lol
Why not just double up the flange plates?
😎🍺👍🍺
Sometimes shorter is better. That's what she said! NOT.
Dude Just make a spacer flange.
What of you took a hole saw and notched the header that was too close you could have patched the header you notched
