Same for watching all three of them and enjoying each one, though to spark the most emotion out of me despite not being that emotional/expressive when watching them, Flow took and stole the cake from Wild Robot. Everything that happened on screen had me focused and reactive every second, and just by the intro I was ready for tears
FINALLY! Someone’s talking about this little kitty cat. It’s so calm the entire movie, the animation is definitely behind the big three animation teams, but that’s what makes it better than them, this film is literally giving us something that we haven’t seen, realistic models interacting with each other with a beautiful shader, that’s what makes this film different from the other ones and I am totally on board for this.
I think that the visual "imperfections" are much more intentional than people seem to assume. I listened to some interviews with Gints Zilbalodis. And he was talking how he put a lot of thought into experimenting with 3D and taking it to different directions that it has been done before. The super detailed CGI in his opinion create an unrealistic feeling and too detailed characters take them out of their environment. He said that in 2D animations often environments are more detailed than characters and that makes them more immersive. So he tried to recreate that in 3d. Also lighting on animals was a bit more ephemeral for that same reason as well - to make them more of their world.
They also spent a lot of time at the zoo observing animal movements and recording sounds. Love this movie. So much is spoken without words. I've seen it 3 times. Yesterday, the Golden Globe Award was brought home. Hi from Latvia. I like your channel also ;)
its always the low budget ones. They are the ones with the most effort put into them because of how much more work and dedication they have to put into it.
Adding salt to the wound for Disney in my opinion. First Mufasa bombs at the box office and Sonic 3 succeeds over them, now they literally get snuffed from the Golden Globe by a freaking *Cat.* Just let that sink in for a moment.
Before that wish, their anniversary celebration movie, bombed so hard it’s a JOKE online..when you look it up you find so many videos of people remaking the music and even plot 😂 Disney just keeps sinking
I really REALLY hope their new Snow White live action film is boycotted or DOWNRIGHT fails so that way they learn not to do that kind of trash anymore. Sure they haven’t always been the kindest company if that makes sense, but I wish they would go back to better films.
I've only watched part of the movie, but from what ive seen it was incredible. The atmosphere overall was genuinely really nice, and it sort of felt like the whole thing was an incrediblely made video game cutscene.
Sometimes I have to turn the movie off. I’ve recently had to say goodbye to my childhood cats and most were black, I have to hide in the closet or go somewhere private when I need to cry, I don’t want my parents to get angry at me for this.
Dude I’m so happy that softwares like blender are becoming more accessible to the general public. People who are passionate about their work have a platform and don’t need backing from the “big” studios
Man, its a shame that the new wallace movie had to be on netflix. I loved the plot and the nostalgic themes it portrayed since it played a major part of my childhood. It may not win the oscars but you got to give it aardman for their comeback. Flow looks amazing ngl
I knew this guy was familiar! Years ago, Away was on a television channel that aired in my country. I watched it with my dad (who I'll thank for pointing it out to me), and was impressed! I'm so glad he didn't stop there and went on to make Flow, which looks absolutely gorgeous! Hats off to Gints and the team!
@shoopydoopy It was! I'll admit I was slightly suprised how a Latvian film made it's way to Slovenia, but then again, living in the EU tends to come with the benefit of having surprisingly easy access to films from other EU countries. Sometimes that access being your own (possibly national?) TV! Edit: I decided to clarify that by "possibly national" I meant that I'm not exactly sure where I've seen it, but presumed it was one of our national channels (SLO 1, SLO 2 or SLO 3), since I've seen many EU movies on there during my lifetime, especially on the first one. It could've been elsewhere, but these are my most likely candidates. As for when, considering the film is from 2019, there's a high chance I saw it during the pandemic, likely after I finished video classes for the day.
It's good to see international animation being recognised and putting some competition to western based companies. Don't get me wrong the Wild Robot is perfection, inside out 2 was fine, I still like the first one though, but this is a good push for animation around the world outside the general US based one. There's also the glassworker from Pakistan and khamsa the well of oblivion from Algeria, I watched the later and it's amazing and still waiting for the other to hit theatres in my country. But overall, another reason why such films like Flow beat the big companies is because they just focus on telling a story that all audiences regardless of age and nationality can relate or follow in the form of beautiful art without any unnecessary additions, not even sprinkles, or making it very centric on the country production culture (for example inside out 2 is based on average modern American teen girl experience which will contain parts that non Americans won't connect too whether in main story or background) but these three movies don't at all, even if they inspire from their cultures like glassworker and khamsa it's to serve building the fictional world and has no direct relation to real life. I hope to see more of successful and interesting international animation because other people and countries deserve to tell their stories and get recognition, and I'll make sure to check out Away it looks fascinating 😊
Flow was an unexpected suprise, by comming from an unknown studio outside UUEE. Due to its interesting animation, memorable moments like the secretary bird's mystical farewell, characters that feel both realistic and charming and its capability of telling a story without dialogues. It became one of my three favorite films of 2024, tied up with Wild Robot and Kingdom of The Planet of the Apes. And as bad I feel for Roz, someone had to win and the adorable little panther and his friends earned their victory fair enough.
Unlike any recent movie, this one had me on the edge of tears at any given moment. I felt like I should made myself a streak for the number of times I was gonna cry for these animals and shed tears by the end of it. It was beautiful and a breath of fresh air, it truly deserved it's reward!
Ngl even tho I haven't watched flow yet and I've already watched the wild robot I think Flow just has a way better animation and feels more... realistic while having that animated look. I feel like wild robot makes it look to real to the point where the lighting just feels kinda like a minecraft shaders pack. Still love both of them I just like Flows better.
I remember watching the trailer when it had only a few thousand views. It was so beautiful, but considering it was made by a small team from a small country, I never expected it to go against industry's giants and come on top. This is such a big win not only for the team behind Straume, but also for indie animation as a whole. Can't wait for it to come to my country, so I could experience all that wonder on the big screen.
I watched Flow last week and I was constantly internally gushing about how good this movie looks, on top of that it has some of the most beautiful and emotional atmosphere I've seen in any animated movie :-)
I feel like Aqua and Flow are Gints' love letter to himself and to the film industry as he learned as an independent solo and a collaborator with a team in making a film. I wish him all the best and congrats to Flow's Golden Globe win. A testament to his relatively small team and a budget making movie magic here! Doing his Latvia film industry proud and special shout out to the brave black kitty cat!
What an incredible and inspirational story. It just shows that you don't need extremely fancy equipment (which I thought is what this was but I am seriously shocked that this beautiful animation style came from a simple team and equipment) and a whole studio. You just need a dream. This whole thing is extremely inspiring to me as a film student and aspiring director. The cat is like his little mascot silently supporting him through the years.
It’s absolutely amazing how far indie animation has come in the past year or so! I’ve always loved the works of smaller studios, so seeing them with this kind of recognition is so cool. Huge win for these teams!
this is amazing! its sad to think theres artists like this man who COULD make stunning animations like this but cant cause they are bound by the demands of bigger companies like Disney. and even if they do theres tons of restrictions they cant show in it like any lgbt scenes or overly complicated scenes cause they are both on a budget and have to cut their animations down to something small and simple so they wont go over any "special (short) animation" time. i hope so many more come out and make films like this cause it always amazes me. especially since he did this in BLENDER. thats crazy! i cant even open blender without it spazzing out and giving me an overly dramatic death scene before crashing.
Honestly, the animation reminds me of a video game named little kitty big city. The cat looks very similar to the main character in that game and it just gives me that like animation vibe. So cute ❤
I watched Flow, Inside Out and Wild Robot, but tbh I don't think Flow should have won. I am in no way in favor of any studio and I stopped liking Disney so many years ago, so I'm not biased in my opinion. I adored Flow, it was very pretty to watch and it was amazing what they accomplished with such scarce budget, but it felt very lacking too. Maybe with more budget it could have expanded a lot more because, for me, the models they used felt limited, and the animation a bit static except for the main characters. But in a world literally flooded, I think they should have used more kind of species for the fish and not just the same fish everywhere but with different colors (or other sea cretures per se), and different birds instead of secretaries only. Also it kinda had plot holes? But well, I take those as artistic liberties, even if those doesn't make sense sometimes. I'm not sure who should have won (definitely not Disney or Pixar, those movies were lovely, but not magnificent) but in my personal opinion it shouldn't have been Flow (If you want to argue, you're welcome to do so!! I want to see other opinions but please don't be mean only because I don't share the same opinion)
No problem! That's a totally valid opinion :) I just think it was very cool to see an animated movie with no dialogue win. Anyone in the world could watch this movie regardless of language and get the same experience. Pure visual storytelling!
I absolutely loved the The Wild Robot as much as the next cinema goer, but to see an independent film rise above everything else is a larger victory in my book. Flow was praised just as much as The Wild Robot by critics and audiences alike, and shares similar scores!
The graphics remind me a lot of this Roblox(?) game Warrior Cats Ultimate Edition. If this film was made in Blender, that would explain why, as the game's assets were also, more than likely, made in Blender
I remember seeing the trailer for this film months ago, and thinking that it looked like it would be beautiful! I’ll bet it totally deserved the win, even with how good I hear The Wild Robot was ☺️
It's just come out on VOD. I watched it and loved it. This is a Miyazaki-level masterpiece. It is open-ended so I hope I see more adventures of the Cat and his friends.
It’s impressive that an indie film managed to beat stuff like The Wild Robot and Inside Out 2. Considering the animation, it definitely deserves it. Hope it gets to a theater in UAE soon so I can watch it.
His first feature, Away, he made at home by himself apparently. I watched it recently and it's powerful. It starts out slow, but give it a few minutes and you'll be hooked.
much as i love the wild robot, flow definitely deserved this. such a stunning and haunting but ultimately simple movie that just tells itself perfectly
I got the chance to see Flow in theaters and it was absolutely breathtaking. It’s a film I really want to analyze, because with all the knowledge I have about lighting, color, composition, etc and how that pairs with symbolism and deeper meaning, I still don’t under some of the scenes and elements of this film. It is a beautifully put together story, but it requires some much deeper thinking to understand all of it because there is no dialogue
ah! i see that with every movie that becomes increasingly popular, he gains more money which will further fund his even greater next projects. i hope he keeps going, and improves
Didn't hear from this movie untill about 1 hour and 40-something minutes ago (I watched it after watching this video) and now I am crying haha thank you for showing up in my recommended ❤❤
We need more indie films like this to compete with the Box Office. The movies we have now from 2000s+ are all great, but all tropes are slightly overused. Silent films like this deserves more! I esp loved The Wild Robot and Flow. Two of my favorite films of all time
People being upset about this film winning over the others are entirely missing how this benefits everyone. It pushes EVERYONE to work harder, a loss should push you to work harder to achieve what you want and what others enjoy. Plus, this film winning opens the door for a much more diverse animation scene; film scene even, with Godzilla Minus one the prior year opening up US enjoyment of foreign films. This is good for everyone, even the loosing candidates; I loved The Wild Robot, but we should know that they can do this again, and maybe improve upon that! We want improvements, not stagnantatnon

As a latvian, I was completely shocked that something so great came out from this small country!
Literally no human words, only animal sounds, perfect.
so cool!

It’s absolutely amazing how far indie animation has come in the past year or so! I’ve always loved the works of smaller studios, so seeing them with this kind of recognition is so cool. Huge win for these teams!
One thing about this film is I appreciate that it allows room for the viewer's imagination to take over and interpret the story.
Flow really gives animation a glow!
Nice Rhyme!!!
Im a latvian, how did I not hear of this film?!
You did now!!! :)
1:10 that’s literally a slugcat. Looks just like nightcat or whatever it’s name was :3
this is amazing! its sad to think theres artists like this man who COULD make stunning animations like this but cant cause they are bound by the demands of bigger companies like Disney. and even if they do theres tons of restrictions they cant show in it like any lgbt scenes or overly complicated scenes cause they are both on a budget and have to cut their animations down to something small and simple so they wont go over any "special (short) animation" time. i hope so many more come out and make films like this cause it always amazes me. especially since he did this in BLENDER. thats crazy! i cant even open blender without it spazzing out and giving me an overly dramatic death scene before crashing.
What a f___ing year it has been so far, and what a f___ing year it will be.
Honestly, the animation reminds me of a video game named little kitty big city. The cat looks very similar to the main character in that game and it just gives me that like animation vibe. So cute ❤
Cute!
I LOVED THIS MOVIE SO MUCH IM SO GLAD SOMEONE IS TALKING ABOUT IT!
ME TOO! :)
I'm not sure who should have won (definitely not Disney or Pixar, those movies were lovely, but not magnificent) but in my personal opinion it shouldn't have been Flow
(If you want to argue, you're welcome to do so!! I want to see other opinions but please don't be mean only because I don't share the same opinion)
No problem! That's a totally valid opinion :)
I just think it was very cool to see an animated movie with no dialogue win. Anyone in the world could watch this movie regardless of language and get the same experience. Pure visual storytelling!
As a journalist in Latvia reported: "This achievement in the movie industry is like the first Latvian on the moon."
Hahaha, that's awesome!
I absolutely loved the The Wild Robot as much as the next cinema goer, but to see an independent film rise above everything else is a larger victory in my book.
Flow was praised just as much as The Wild Robot by critics and audiences alike, and shares similar scores!
Totally agree!
I watched dit a while back with some buddies and we were all confused when the bird ascended, and yet I still love this film
hahah, me too!
While watching that scene I was thinking to myself "Was the bird chosen by god?.... Is this supposed to be the rapture happening?"
I do like The Wild Robot, but I do wish this is what The Wild Robot should have been, completely silent
Totally! Like that first trailer for the wild robot
I don’t think so, the animals could of been but the robot should of talked. I honestly like how it turned out though
@@testerwulf3357 the Robot I agree tbh
thats a cool idea, but I think its because in the book all the animals and the robot talked
the characters of the Wild Robot are fantasy type but Flow has more realistic animals so they would keep quiet
3.5 million of a budget in that golden quality of animation signed me up😊
Flow was so good! i really liked how the film doesn't have any dialogues or voicelines. It makes it comfortable!
The graphics remind me a lot of this Roblox(?) game Warrior Cats Ultimate Edition. If this film was made in Blender, that would explain why, as the game's assets were also, more than likely, made in Blender
cool!
This actually changes everything
BRO THIS TRAILER IS BEAUTIFUL AND SO IS THE STORY BEHIND IT IM SO EXCITED TO WATCH IT
LATVIAN FILM MENTIONED🔥🔥🔥
Wooooo!!!
I didn’t know the guy that made the move started with 2d then moved to 3D to make flow
This gives me hope for becoming a successful animator in Belgium! I’m so proud that a Belgian team created Baldurs Gate 3 and this amazing movie ❤️
ruclips.net/video/FuUlo1TDYEk/видео.htmlsi=cJiOlXSXcKbqGb8M
Heck yeah!
The Belgian team made only few shots, most of the character animation was made in France, and the rest in Latvia.
I remember seeing the trailer for this film months ago, and thinking that it looked like it would be beautiful! I’ll bet it totally deserved the win, even with how good I hear The Wild Robot was ☺️
They are both great! :)
Wow, I need to watch this meowsterpiece
Hahahahaha, Watch it right MEOW!
Honestly its a three way fight for me between the Wild Robot, Wallace & Gromit, and Flow. They're all so gooooooood!
I KNOW! I really liked Inside Out 2 too! Good year for animated movies
I still think that the wild robot is the best movie, perfect and unique idea, perfect story, got me emotional, And a fantastic lesson.
That's fair, it was really good! :)
It's just come out on VOD. I watched it and loved it. This is a Miyazaki-level masterpiece. It is open-ended so I hope I see more adventures of the Cat and his friends.
Good Idea
It’s impressive that an indie film managed to beat stuff like The Wild Robot and Inside Out 2. Considering the animation, it definitely deserves it. Hope it gets to a theater in UAE soon so I can watch it.
In this video, we not only see flow, but many beautiful examples of art that came out this year.
Absolutely!
Yoooo, what remix of Forest Interlude is that in the background? It's flipping DOPE
Right!? I think it was this!

@shoopydoopy sounds about right, your editor made a good choice 😁
@@MCDexpo lol, I'm my editor
one man team over here
@@shoopydoopy oh, I figured since you weren't sure that you had an editor that did it
No biggie, my bad
I watched it with my family last week and loved it. Its so cool that such a small movie is getting so much publicity.
His first feature, Away, he made at home by himself apparently. I watched it recently and it's powerful. It starts out slow, but give it a few minutes and you'll be hooked.
Praud of STRAUME and FLOW ❤❤❤
This move is Oscar material
I'm very lucky to have been able to catch this in theaters! Very cute and well made film
Nice!!! :)
much as i love the wild robot, flow definitely deserved this. such a stunning and haunting but ultimately simple movie that just tells itself perfectly
Latvians absolutely cooked with Blender
Looks gorgeous and refreshing! Excited to eventually watch it!
ah! i see that with every movie that becomes increasingly popular, he gains more money which will further fund his even greater next projects. i hope he keeps going, and improves
Totally! Can't wait to see what he does next
Alternate title:Indie cat destroys Big companies
All without saying ONE. SINGLE. WORD. No less.
3:22 You forgot one major elements that some billion animation corporation sometimes forgot. Or the author of the movie forgot
You forgot to mention Memoir of a snail by Adam Elliott(the director of mary and max)
I mention it near the end. very good movie!
Even with how much i LOVE the wild robot, flow deserved that award
Didn't hear from this movie untill about 1 hour and 40-something minutes ago (I watched it after watching this video) and now I am crying haha thank you for showing up in my recommended ❤❤
Not a single line said in this film.. And yet, I need my tissues.
Awe, that's awesome!!! :)
its godzilla minus one all over again
Heck yeah! I love that movie!!! :)
LATVIAAAAAAAAAAAA 🇱🇻🇱🇻🇱🇻🇱🇻🇱🇻 so proud to be latvian
Indie projects FTW! 🏆
We need Warrior cats animated like this
That would be sick!
I didnt know this was a film! I really thought this was a game and was excited to play it once it released 😂
It was animated in blender, makes sense why everyone thought it was a game at first sight. Haha
I love cats
yep!!!
I've yet to watch it but the premise reminds a bit of The Land Before Time. Happy to learn it outcompeted the big guys!
Totally!
We need more indie films like this to compete with the Box Office. The movies we have now from 2000s+ are all great, but all tropes are slightly overused. Silent films like this deserves more!
I esp loved The Wild Robot and Flow. Two of my favorite films of all time
I haven’t even heard of this film, but it looks amazing and I hope to check it out whenever I can.
This is nothing new. Last year, it was Ghibli and the year before that Netflix. I'm glad to see other studios getting the respect they deserve.
Actually it is something new. Ghibli and Netflix compared to Flow are giants.
I have a feeling Disney won’t be happy
Hi shoopy
Hi! :)
Absolutely!
