There's pretty much no reason to pick up the side-pack or the sub-machine gun as either of the characters since you don't really need them. The game's inventory isn't too difficult to manage and it gives you enough slots for it to be just fine. The sub-machine gun is also not very useful since it's already really easy to stockpile a lot of ammo for other guns in the game. Not to mention, the sub-machine gun takes up two slots in the inventory, making it even less desirable. Either way, I usually leave these for the B run since it doesn't matter. I try to force myself to use the sub-machine gun at some points, although the side-pack does become useful at the tail-end of the game just before the mutated Tyrant fight, specifically when you need to pick up the sockets. It gives you a bit more space for healing items just before you engage in the battle.
I've played this game on occasion several times before, although I usually play this game only when I am in the mood and that's pretty rare. Maybe once or twice a year.
You know the headless body in the licker hallway and the guy who was pecked to death have bullets on them.
Sorry but one other question, why didn't you (as Claire) take the sidepack?

Out of curiosity, have you ever played this game before now?
