- A massive Red tide washed into False Bay, South Africa, and the bioluminescence it produced, amazed everyone watching ! Trillions of tiny diatoms mixing enzymes and making light, putting on a magical show.
The chemical is Luciferin (from the Latin lucifer, "light-bringer") is a generic term for the light-emitting compound found in organisms that generate bioluminescence. Luciferins typically undergo an enzyme-catalysed oxidation and the resulting excited state intermediate emits light upon decaying to its ground state... so states Wikipedia !
I bet the dog getting covered in that stuff and then shaking off would have been a REALLY spectacular sight. Just imagine it!
