  • Macular hole surgery is a procedure to repair a small break in the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. During the surgery, an eye surgeon removes the vitreous gel from inside the eye and inserts a gas bubble. The bubble helps close the hole by pressing against the macula. Over time, the bubble is absorbed and replaced by natural eye fluids. This surgery can improve vision and prevent further vision loss, and is usually done on an outpatient basis.
