Finally got around to doing this filter upgrade on my 2015 Tacoma 4.0 with 44100 miles on it. The factory filter was still in tact. I am still glad to get this done. It took about 5 minutes. Thanks for the tip.
My SAIS went critical and put my truck into limp mode just over a week ago (2014 TRD, 113k kilometers). THANKFULLY I had the ECP Platinum package and was able to get the replacement covered under warranty (2700 otherwise at the dealership) It was in my fanatic researches that lead me to the Unifilter mod and this channel (filter should be here in a couple of days, thank you!!) I have been watching a lot of your other videos and love the information I am gaining. As I now 100% own my Taco, I plan on going through everything systematically and repairing, replacing or cleaning everything possible to give it a long and happy life!
@@Tacomaholic I was lucky and did my homework. But the SAIS is a silly and tricky system to pin down in the warranty stuff. But hey, it gave me an opportunity to learn and share a lot of valuable information and that's always a plus side to these things
I actually watched your uni filter video and found a K&N filter that fits and installed that. It was around the same price and I can use the cleaning kit for the engine air filter on the little filter. I've checked it every once in a while and it's been about a year since the original install. It's still as clean as the day I put it on.
@@iamthe.alphabetyes. I just ordered it (same part number you commented on) and put it on 3 minutes ago. That filter comes red and I don’t think it’s pre oiled. I didn’t oil it. Don’t know if I should. But it fit perfectly with the cover and looks pretty good with the chrome top.
I seen the instagram post first and thought for 1 second it was going to be a battery upgrade 🤔. Love all your videos you inspired my build... Keep up the awesome work👍
Damn...it’s been 2-1/2 years already? Now I feel so much older, thanks! And no, I haven’t checked my filter either. I guess I will when it stops snowing and warms up a bit!
You had a lot better luck than I did. I checked mine after 6 months during an oil change and the rubber had dry rot under the hose clamp. Maybe I tightened it too much initially. I found the exact same K&N filter and been using that for a year now.
Hey man love your videos and there are a lot of your mods that I would love to do with my taco. I sadly lost my 2011 taco to a tree but I got a good pay out and got a 2020 tacoma trd offroad.
I did mine inspired by your video, it's probably been 1.5-2 years since I've checked mine. I've been meaning to check it and will probably do so in the spring
I bought (2) K&N versions and just re-oil one of them every other oil change and then clean the other one. It's a little dirty but honestly it could probably go much longer... 10K frequency seems good enough. Also I removed the housing and leave it off. I think it lets the filter breathe a little more easily. I live in Phoenix so we don't get a lot of rain , moisture here so that's not likely an issue.
I haven't checked mine, but tbh I'm not sure that I ever planned to. If Toyota thought that foam filter would last forever, the higher quality unifilter will probably last a good long time. I've had mine in for a year, I'll look at it when I next clean my k&n air filter.
Bri-guy, with your tailgate mod you did, can you continue to mod it and cut new holes for stuff? Cuz I thought of a couple good ideas, USB charging ports, and AR/pistol mag wells. 😎👍🇺🇸
Forgot to mention that you did not CLEAN the filter before oiling it. For my K&N filters, there is a special cleaning spray which you spray on, let sit, then rinse the dirt and debris off. Then let fully dry, before adding the oil. Some people have recommended soaking in Dawn dishwashing detergent for a while, rinse, then let dry before adding the oil. Wonder if you can use the K&N cleaner and oil for this UNI air filter?
Since this gets air sucked through it for about 4 seconds each time you turn your engine off you can probably check it every 10 or 20 years and be fine, lol!
I changed mine a week after you did yours. And no I haven't either thought about it.......I completely forgot till now. I had no idea its been 2 1/2 years. You sure thats right?
Before you do this, check on your recall list. Turns out mine was under a recall, that just came out in last 6months or so. They replaced the whole system at my local Toyota dealer. Because mine went bad and threw a check engine light.
Interesting - Toyo had a recall on Air intake valves and replaced air intake (2012 TX Pro). Left my uni sitting on the front seat- so I popped off the cover and put UNI back on.New cover would need some hacking to fit UNi. Wonder if I can just get the cover.
Hey man this is what I do when I clean my air filters clean it with hot water and dawn dish soap. Then you would use the spray to coat the top let it sit for like 5 minutes & you good to go
I have run out of K&N cleaner in the past. Simple Green also works if you spray it on and let it cut the oil and dirt and then rinse it off and let it dry.
I’ve had my 2014 for 2 years now and bought it at 82k mikes. Now has 132k miles…..I’m sure mine has been replaced at some point before I purchase it, buuuuut after watching your first video on this, I’m definitely going to upgrade that. Probably the K&N one cuz your link for the uni filter says it’s currently unavailable.
@@Tacomaholic So I just installed it 😅 Is it supposed to make a really loud like screaming sound when starting your truck?!? 🤣 I started my truck and it made that sound for about 20 seconds and then stopped and then when I shut my truck off it made that sound again….
So I have 2 questions: 1) Once you put the filter in place, and then add the protective cover, nothing but the bottom of the filter is exposed. Wouldn’t that drastically reduce the air intake? Because before you removed and discarded the old cap, air entered in a 360° area. 2) Did you notice ANY discernible difference in performance when you installed this filter? You mentioned in another video that it sounded different when you turned OFF the vehicle. But what about when accelerating, revving, or idling? Any difference?
The SAIS system is only related to emissions and has no bearing on the engine's performance. You can hear that system sucking in a last bit of air when you turn the truck off because of the new filter placed outside of the unit.
@@Tacomaholic that is strange, because didn’t you say that if the foam breaks down and gets sucked into certain parts (restricting air intake), the vehicle would be sluggish, and some people reported that it would not go over 45 mph? So I would assume restriction to air DOES impede the performance. I was just asking because I am curious if you knew anything else about this.
@@RaymondMillbrae I know Toyota just added the system to be emissions compliant during the 2nd Gen Era. Here's their definition of what the system does: "Secondary Air Injection Pump. ...
