biggest improvement to mpg will come from driving a few MPH slower than usual. i cruise at 60-65, never over 70 as the wind resistance compounds at higher speeds. takes your MPGs from the teens to over 20, just by slowing down a bit.

Not to discourage your video but only 20% of the additives work when you add them through the gas tank. If your engine is a PFI then you benefit more. Driving habits is also a big issue in mpg. I expect she will get good beading for 6=8 months IF she does not do any finish maintenance, but any detailer would use a booster product which should extend to a bit over a year. Nice vid... btw, Amsoil P.I. Is another great fuel treatment. I’ve done before and after intake manifold removals and it makes the intake runners (wherever the fuel injectors spray) looks brand new (previously thick gunk/carbon buildup). My 2020 4x4, V6 Tacoma Access Cab with a 6 foot bed gets 26.8 MPG doing 68 MPH, on the freeway. In town I get 19.7 MPG, stop and go and up to 45 MPH. I have the Firestone Destination Tires set at 32 PSI. And it hits 60 MPH very fast and sounds great. I think that the tires are the best way to improve MPG. I would not waste my time with much else. All my other new Toyotas 4x4s had the big tires and never better than 19 MPG. I do not do a lot of off road with these tires, but it has never let me down on the trail.
Techron is great. Use it 2x per year in all my cars. Keeps the injectors clean. I use Marvel or Lucas in the gas on the regular with an occasional seafoam. I use them all. Might be a waste of money. Have nothing to compare not using these products. I change the oil with mobil one 15k oil with a mobil one 15k filter every 5k miles. I am a maintenance fanatic. To keep your truck tip top only costs a few dollars more averaged out. Have a 22 TRD Off Rd on order and I plan on bring buried in it. It's gonna go 1 mil miles at a minimum.
I currently own a 2011 Taco with 311k miles on it. I don’t use fuel additives as these days almost every fuel already has additives/cleaners in it. My buddy is a mechanic with over 40 years of experience and he told me that the additives aren’t necessary due to the cleaners the fuel these days already have. Tire pressure, air filter and driving habits are the best way to improve mpg.
Not exceeding the speed limit and don't tailgate to avoid hard braking and re-accelerations saves gas and reduce wear on your brake pads. I sound like my dad now.
I have a 2007 Camry. You do not get better fuel mileage with higher air pressure, you get less. The previous owner of my car had the air set at 40psi for every tire. As soon as changed it back to down to 35 psi, fuel economy improved immediately. Too much air pressure per tire makes your ride drink more, not less.
If you actually want to notice a difference go with BG 44K. This is a way better additive. It runs about 30 dollars and you will see a difference after just one tank of gas. I've used techron and it's better than most but BG 44K is the way to go.
That's what we use in the Toyota/Lexus shop I work at. Also using fuel additives every tank of gas is a waste of money in my opinion. Use it maybe once a year or so many months. Also she praises Chevron and their fuel quality is pretty bad. Lots of knock in the tuning community. I recommend Shell, or Costco fuels.
You won't. Additives are a money grab. I'm a certified motorcycle tech with Yamaha and Honda. The very best things you can do is accelerate slower, regular maintenance(oil/filter/plugs) buy non ethanol gas, and check tire pressure. Buying regular pump gas and adding ethanol "reversing" additives is a pipe dream compared to actually using non ethanol gas. Not all stations carry it. And it is a bit more per gallon. But it's scientifically better. I guarantee my certifications on it.
Great videos just got my Tacoma and still deciding how to upgrade my 🌮. But you have some great ideas thanks for making this vids and helping us new tacoma owners get some ideas
That is not a true statement, but there IS a question of cost vs return. Typically the cost of the additives is far greater than the bonus they give in fuel economy, but in the case of fuel system cleaners, if they work as advertised (not all do) the real benefit is not fuel economy, but rather engine component longevity. The same is true of some oil additives, and some coolant additives. In the end you may see a couple extra MPG, the cost will almost assuredly be greater than the cost of the fuel, but as the saying goes "your engine will thank you"... For those of us looking to see out Toyotas reach their 250-350k mark, this is a good thing. The tire pressure and air filter WILL see MPG bonuses slowing down to 55-65 on the highway will give the biggest bonus, but is not something we modern Americans are often willing to do, and depending on where you live runs the risk of someone getting angry and shooting you for it.
Want better MPG? Check out the custom OV Tune by SiBi Built in SoCal! Smoother powerband, better throttle response, eliminates transmission gear hunting and gives you better MPG! Customizable for added weight/accessories, tire size, regearing and fuel grade. I got it for my truck and it definitely made a huge difference.
@@Jason56B yea that looks like another popular one folks are getting. I can only speak from my first hand experience with the SiBi tune but I say any tune is better than no tune at all, it really wakes these trucks up!
@@jonathanhenriquez4718 I got it back in February and I paid $400 for SiBi’s Custom performance tune and he also included the Toyota TSB updates since my truck is a 17’ which saved me time/money at the dealership. Well worth it IMO.
Thanks Chloe Ill have to give this stuff a try 👍 Idk if you thought about getting a tune but id highly recommended it. My truck did not like me adding weight to it, the transmission was not happy lol. It greatly reduces gear hunting, which allowed my truck to drive much smoother. My Mpgs also went from around 16-17 to 20-21 on 285/75/16s 😊
Great tips Chloe!! I need to do a fuel system cleaner. The biggest MPG difference for me was getting my truck OV tuned (about 2-3 MPG increase city driving) so I'd definitely recommend that as a "mod" to anyone who is still needing better MPG after doing the stuff you mentioned.
This stuff does makes a difference on my 2014 2.7L Tacoma Prerunner compared to any other fuel cleaner. Engine runs much smoother and gas lasts longer.
Another way to get better mpg's is to Have the throttle body cleaned and to do a fuel injection cleaning service on your truck every 15k miles. That can be done at your local toyota dealership..
I think it's cool that a huge Multi-Billion dollar corporation sponsored your video. That says something about you (intelligent, articulate, capable, beautiful). Just bought a Chevy Silverado Trail Boss, but still haven't taken it off road yet. It's more of a "city truck" for now until I break it in. I did get a pressure washer though (which I love : )
This stuff actually makes a small difference. I've been a mechanical engineer for 40 years and am highly skeptical about this kind of stuff. But Advance Auto Parts had a buy one, get one free special so I figured "why not?". My 2017 Tacoma TRD Offroad has a little over 85,000 miles on it and I typically average about 20.3 MPG (stock size KO2s, bed cover, manual transmission). The tank with the additive is averaging 20.6 MPG - so about a 1.5% increase in fuel economy. This is kind of surprising since modern vehicles have a lot of engineering to optimize fuel economy - it's hard to squeeze out anything extra. The engine may be running smoother, I'll have to pay more attention next trip. It'll be interesting to see if the improvement persists across multiple tanks of gas.
My Tacoma doesn't like full-throttle accelerations, happiest to slowly come up to speed and just cruise along. Back roads at 60 mph are much nicer drives than trying to keep it at 80 mph on interstate (yes, I am in Texas). Oh, the worst ride I had was after picking up my Tacoma. Cold icy roads, kept thinking "boy this suspension is harsh". Two weeks later I discovered 60 psi in all four tires! The door sticker listed 30 psi recommended.
Have a 2017 SR 4x4 double cab with 37000 miles, including a Tonneau cover. Tires are 265/70R17. I've added Techron to other vehicles, but not this one, keep my tire pressure like you do, and have the regular filter. I average 24 mpg on the highway.
We just drove from Ohio to Florida on a 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD sport pretty much like yours by driving sensibly we had gotten 27 MPG that is doing the speed limit at 70 with no problems combination we were getting 22 MPG but that is a good idea for fuel additive it does help but if you want more horsepower there’s other tricks then using a tuner by getting bigger fuel pump bigger injectors
I've been using Techron for years and it keeps my injectors and combustion chambers clean, which equates to better fuel milage and less mechanical issues down the road. (Pun intended)
I can't wait for the new generation Tundra's, Tacos and 4runners that will get 30+ MPG. These 14 mpg trucks will be absolete by 2025. Good vid! Techron does help with mpg and keeps the engine running smooth had it on my 01' VQ35 truck. 👍
I use Berryman B12 Got the Spark Plugs changed on 2015 Nissan Rogue at 80, 000 miles and still very clean but I started using Berryman B12 at 50,000 miles On my other vehicles I used Seafoam or Gumout but I prefer Berryman B12 now
As always great advice air filter upgrade in my Tundra TDR off-road 2021! I thought yours would get better than that 17 on highway for me and town 14! Just went down to North Carolina 16.8 down and 17.2 way back here in Massachusetts! You brighten up my day keep up the good work!

The biggest creator of carbon is in running an engine for short rides, where the engine doesn't get up to its normal operating temperature, so your riding on the highway for an hour is actually good for it vs. just doing just some local short runs into town and such. Also too, the Tacoma engine uses a fuel system called D-4S, shorthand for direct-injection four-stroke gasoline engine Superior version, which employs both direct- and port-fuel injection depending on need and load. While Direct injection is notorious for carbon buildup on the intake valves, the port injection helps wash the intake valves off. It's the best of both worlds. Running those aggressive tires certainly isn't going to help your milage any. Then don't forget, changing the tire diameter messes up your speedometer reading as well, so look up the correction factor for the tire diameter you are running. Running a good Tier 3 gasoline, like Chevron is good as well, especially w/its Techron in it. Then use gasoline from a well-used gasoline station vs. one that isn't, is good too. The well-used one has a good circulation of fresh new gasoline in its tank vs. a non-populator one, which has fuel sitting in its tank for a long time, which gets old, and moisture collects in it as well. I've got a 2020 Tacoma Extended Cab TRD 4x4 Sport w/a 6 speed manual transmission, w/stock tires, w/the tire pressures set at 35 psi, and I've gotten around 24 mpg doing 70 in cruise control. Of course, that varies when it comes to hills and such.
My Tacoma must be broken, I put 265/75/16 bfg on my truck and only drive to a from work on highway and it tells me 16.5 to 19 max. Not sure how you got bigger tires and get around 20 but good for you cause I am no where near you!
Just finished scraping the carbon build-up off the bbq grill. I can imagine the build-up in the average engine after thousands of miles. Especially with all the low speed stop and go traffic these days.
Awesome video my friend!! We've been lucky here in Canada so far with gas prices, staying lower thankfully (still kinda expensive but hasn't shot up yet).
back in the day, going with a class 4 synthetic oil for tall differentials, trans, and engine, could give you 2-3 mpg.. but nowadays i think they use very good oil in new cars, so i don't know if an aftermarket oil like Amsoil would make that big of a difference. Ill test it on my 2021 offraod and let you know, I should have my first oil change soon
You may not know this, but Keanu Reeves’ legs were so strong in the movie Speed, he pushed the Jaguar off course beyond what the passenger could compensate for when he jumped from the Jag onto the bus.
Hi Chloe, if you really want to clean out the carbon you should use seafoam. You put 1 ounce for each quart of oil in your engine and the rest in the gas. You do this 150 miles before you change the oil. As the truck accumulates mileage you can also pour it through one of the vacuum lines going into the intake. For a more thorough carbon cleaning. They have videos on yt showing how it's done through the intake
yeah If I were you, I'd move to Texas, yeah Texas!!!!! I lived in California stationed at Camp Pendelton Marine Corp Base gas then was around 5&6 a gallon.
I’ve heard that California gas isn’t so good due to the amount of alcohol in the fuel. Rotting fuel lines and unprotected rubber.. any problems with the Toyota?
You should try the Sibi tune from Jason Sibilio. It’s worth it that alone put me well above 21MPGs on 33’s and it has a better throttle response as well
Used this for decades, keeps the dealers and tune up places from trying to sell you injector cleaning, I always tell them I use Techron and they stop trying to upsell. Costco will carry a 6-pack at times, its the best value - great video and Techron rocks..top rated in Google searches as well backing up this vid-

I use Techron every time I change my oil! Best cleaner on the market! 👍🏻 Awesome video! 👌🏻
My 13 Taco, I use K&N air filter and RXP fuel additive (only offered in N. Texas). I am very pleased with these products.
I've been using Tech Ron for many years it's a great product Fantastic video with good information love those KO2 tires
I really haven't seen a difference with my car's performance using these additives every 6 - 10 months (every oil change). So that's a good thing!
I dont own a tacoma but its so informative to know all these tips. I’m closer to owning one, one day 🙏. Thanks for sharing!
That additive isn't doing squat to boost your tacoma gas mileage
@@mattlewandowski73looks like they found their target.
Just got those wheels for my 23 TRD off road. Same color paint. Nice to see how they are gonna look. While I wait to have them mounted.
Want better MPG? Check out the custom OV Tune by SiBi Built in SoCal! Smoother powerband, better throttle response, eliminates transmission gear hunting and gives you better MPG! Customizable for added weight/accessories,
tire size, regearing and fuel grade. I got it for my truck and it definitely made a huge difference.
Will be getting my 4Runner done. 4.88’s hurt the highway driving
Isn’t there a newer/better tune now called kdmax?
@@Jason56B yea that looks like another popular one folks are getting. I can only speak from my first hand experience with the SiBi tune but I say any tune is better than no tune at all, it really wakes these trucks up!
How much did you pay for the tune?
GET KDMAX TUNE
@@JuanManuel-fm9jt Never heard of it haha I'm really happy with the OVTune, but I'll look into it.
Sibi tune is the way to go!
@@Chazyfizzlez KDMAX TUNE LOOK IT UP ON FACEBOOK
This stuff does makes a difference on my 2014 2.7L Tacoma Prerunner compared to any other fuel cleaner. Engine runs much smoother and gas lasts longer.
Straight piping improves mpg, performance and acoustics
I’m lucky to get 18mpg in my tundra.. lol if it’s a tank full of just driving to work it’s 11 mpg... v8 life
Another way to get better mpg's is to Have the throttle body cleaned and to do a fuel injection cleaning service on your truck every 15k miles.
I've used this additive called "fuel injector pro by 104" and it really works well lol
I’m from Fiji 🇫🇯 and own a Toyota Sequoia. Best off road tracks in the world. Nice videos yo
Wow, that is quite a difference! Even the max pressure rating is under 60 psi for my tires!
Have a 2017 SR 4x4 double cab with 37000 miles, including a Tonneau cover. Tires are 265/70R17. I've added Techron to other vehicles, but not this one, keep my tire pressure like you do, and have the regular filter. I average 24 mpg on the highway.
Most smiles per gallon = Tacoma+MX-5 Miata. Thanks for the video!
I’m only getting 7-10mpg in the Tacoma in city driving. Please Any reason for drastically low mpg. Now I’ve seen it get 5-6
Tacoma is awesome. One of the best pick-ups for off-road. Thank you Chloe :)
I've heard that you shouldn't use the fuel additive because the cars and trucks are still new and can mess up the fuel system
I heard that too-from good ol’ Scotty Kilmer of course
I use Chevron gas and the fuel injector cleaner regularly too. Recently put larger tires on my truck so mileage and gas is off now.
The first mode everyone should do is regear! 488or 529 gears! Better mpg and you will finally use the six-gear in the transmission!
With Tacomas regearing should just be part of lift kits😂
I can't wait for the new generation Tundra's, Tacos and 4runners that will get 30+ MPG. These 14 mpg trucks will be absolete by 2025. Good vid! Techron does help with mpg and keeps the engine running smooth had it on my 01' VQ35 truck. 👍
My son met you in Colorado and he's been in love ever since
I get 30 mpg when I go cruise control between 60-65 on freeway with my 2020 4x4 Tacoma.
Thanks for this video, can this fuel additive also be used in a second generation Tacoma (2005-2015) with the 4.0 engine
I use Berryman B12
Got the Spark Plugs changed on 2015 Nissan Rogue at 80, 000 miles and still very clean but I started using Berryman B12 at 50,000 miles
On my other vehicles I used Seafoam or Gumout but I prefer Berryman B12 now
As always great advice air filter upgrade in my Tundra TDR off-road 2021! I thought yours would get better than that 17 on highway for me and town 14! Just went down to North Carolina 16.8 down and 17.2 way back here in Massachusetts! You brighten up my day keep up the good work!
Kevin....I have a Tundra also..2020 TRD PRO I got 17mpg stock down to Ft Bragg and back to columbus, oh. Only thing not stock is the bed cover I have. ruclips.net/video/D9-tK0B-_n0/видео.html
Thank you!
Not sure how you got bigger tires and get around 20 but good for you cause I am no where near you!
be nice to have a hybrid version of trucks from toyota.
Sr 4cyl, 28-30 mpg highway. Pedal comander, bed cover, slow get up and go.
I have a 2021 V6 sport manual trans. 4wd. I have stock size BFGoodrich ko2s. I get 21 MPG at 70 mph and 27 MPG of 55 miles per hour.
Get a tune at Sibi Built In socal it will completely change the way the truck drives!
Just finished scraping the carbon build-up off the bbq grill. I can imagine the build-up in the average engine after thousands of miles. Especially with all the low speed stop and go traffic these days.
Shoutout to Glen Helen Parkway in the video! We should hit Cleghorn Trail sometime it’s a super great trail
Can we see some bloopers over the years? I think it’ll be beneficial for your channel.
Does your truck even use it's top gear with those tires on it?
Excellent product been using it for years
Hi. What kind of running broad do you recommend Toyota Tacoma access cab?
I use a can of SeaFoam in my gas tank every time I change the oil. Works wonders
Is there a difference that makes a difference?
Best case is they don’t damage gaskets, seals, & etc.
Doesn’t the Atkinson engine clean itself ?
Have you looked into putting headers into your truck? They say it gets you better mpg or added horsepower.
That is the nicest tacoma Seattle trucks
I’d be more than happy if I was getting up the 20’s in my 19 Tundra. Best I got was 16.3 lol 😆
You should invest in a locking gas cap. I got mine at Advance Auto Parts.
Try Mobil 1 AFE (adv. fuel economy) 0w20 oil also.
I am currently getting 22mpg in my Tacoma
Hi Chloe, if you really want to clean out the carbon you should use seafoam. You put 1 ounce for each quart of oil in your engine and the rest in the gas. You do this 150 miles before you change the oil. As the truck accumulates mileage you can also pour it through one of the vacuum lines going into the intake. For a more thorough carbon cleaning. They have videos on yt showing how it's done through the intake
Chloe - what can you share about fuel filters? We have a 2017 Tacoma. Is the filter in the tank? Do you have any experience with it? Thanks much!
yeah If I were you, I'd move to Texas, yeah Texas!!!!!
All I did was change to ko2, same size tire, and lost about 2-3mpg. Couldn't be happier!
I prefer to add red bull to my tank, not only better mileage but I get some good
air time
chloe needs the KDMAX Performance Tune!!!!
My mpg dropped drastically with the KDMax
how is the TRD performance air filter any better than the stock one? looks the same other than the color. wouldn't a cold air intake be better?
Would running premium 91 octane at Chevron be the same thing as adding that bottle?
You should try the Sibi tune from Jason Sibilio. It’s worth it that alone put me well above 21MPGs on 33’s and it has a better throttle response as well
Used this for decades, keeps the dealers and tune up places from trying to sell you injector cleaning, I always tell them I use Techron and they stop trying to upsell. Costco will carry a 6-pack at times, its the best value - great video and Techron rocks..top rated in Google searches as well backing up this vid-
Don’t forget to replace your blinker fluid! Lol! Great video!!
Do I need the TRD cold air intake to use the TRD pro air filter or can I simply use the TRD pro air filter?
2018 TRD sport.
Car experts don’t recommend adding anything to the gas tank to avoid long term problem?
