My 2018 SR5 3.5L V6 Tacoma got maximum 23mpg on long interstate travel cruising at 67mph. I think slow smooth and steady Throttle response is the number one key factor for getting better fuel economy.
I agree Rob. I have a 2021 TRD Sport 4x4 that is giving me the same mileage in the 21-22 range. I can add to your list of reasons: long straight roads with no real hills like I have in Florida. When I use cruise, it will give me a solid 22.
I don't know about the SR5, but I just bought a 2023 Tacoma TRD sport a couple of months ago, and I live in North Carolina close to Winston-Salem. North Carolina has gone to crap in the last 30 years, headed down the same path as Californio, so I am moving to the mountains of Tennessee where the laws, rules and regulations are a lot better. In traveling from Winston-Salem to My land close to Morristown on my last trip, I averaged 24 MPG on a stock TRD Sport. I have done some mods to the truck though I have added a cover over the truck bed, a bug deflector to keep bug guts off the windshield and window visors to keep rain out if I crack the windows a bit, but that's it. I am thinking about putting a roof rack on the truck along with a new front bumper, since the Tacoma doesn't really come with what I consider to be a front bumper and a 2-inch lift. Thing is I don't want to do anything that will decrease my gas mileage, I am hoping to find out how much of a decrease in gas mileage those mods make and maybe how to get the gas mileage back.I guess my next mod will be the paddle commander for eco-mode. I wish one of you guys would make a very informative video on this subject, love your videos keep up the good work
I'm always driving slow so I can spend more time in my truck, even taking that longer rout just to enjoy the ride a bit longer. As for gas, in town I'm averaging 16-18. The best on highway 22-24. It's always nice to see good gas mileage. I'd love to see 21 mpg all the time! Oh, and thanks for rubbing in 70 degrees! Here in Kansas it's been about 10 degrees, today a high of 20.. that's almost shorts weather here lol! Full disclosure, I did do the math on a full tank in town and highway after a trip, and my true average was 18-19.
20 Deg, Shorts weather ??...we just had a 9 Deg. morning this week out here in Eastern Long Island N.Y. Can't wait for the summer to come back !!!I have a 2019 Tacoma Extended cab 4WD. 6cyl. Up until today I was getting a steady 21-22 MPG for the last 2 yrs. but this morning it went down to 16.to 16.9. Really strange , makes me think the computer is a little wonky. I filled the tank just before this happened and recorded the odometer milage so I will check next fill up to see the real average.
In my off-road 4x4 I get 22-24 on long trips and 14-16 driving local to and from work. Also with you having the pre runner you lose all the weight of the 4x4 drive train like the transfer case, front diff and shafts etc. that could be contributing a lot to it too along with the smaller tires.
driving around Los Angeles i get roughly around 16.5-17mpg in my 2016. my dad drove it the other week and it hit 22mpg and i was stunned. he said just going 50-55 steady without stop and go and it does well. now i did drive 130 miles at about 75-90mph the entire way and i got around 13.8 mpg... it was no fun 2016, limited, 4x4 v6. i have heavier and beefier tires on it
My 2017 sr5 vs 4wd I figured out how to get the best fuel economy. Just don't let the engine accelerate past 2000rpms, on take off. Max out freeway rpms at just below 1500. I average 24 to 26 mpg. Never use your brakes if possible. Allow the engine and your speed to wind down naturally, which also keeps the vacuum up. Nobody behind me pays for my fuel or brakes, so they don't get a vote in how I slow down and turn or slow down and stop.
2018 Toyota Tacoma TRD off road 4×4. I was able to get 26mpg at 65mph. I was driving from Arizona to Long Beach California, ( it took forever). It usually averages about 20mpg with combined city and highway driving. But, these numbers are reflected in driving style. Very smooth and slow acceleration. I easily get over 22mpg on my 33 mile commute to work.
I took a trip from my home to a Cabelas and back about 45 miles away. Filled up before I left at the gas station about 200 yards away from my home. When I got back to the house mine was reading over 26mpg. It was mostly interstate driving but I'm easy on the throttle. Going back and forth to work for a week ended up showing 23.8mpg. And I honestly think that might have been underestimated as it said I had around 35 miles left to an empty tank, however, 17 gallons filled it up. I have the 4wd TRD sport, 2021, manual transmission, just over 13,000 miles.
I added only Speed Form TC after 2300 Miles and all of a sudden went from low 15's to over 19 MPG. I have made this change only. Have been using the TC for about 3 weeks and this happened over the last two days. ????????
I have a completely stock 2021 SR5 4x4. When I first bought it, it was getting 23-24 mpg with the stock tires. When I replaced the tires (just tires) my mileage instantly dropped 4 mpg. The tires are Falken AT3’s and are factory size. It’s now getting 19-20 mpg hwy.
The only true gas mileage I believe you can get is fill the tank drive a distance and then check your mileage by how many gallons you refill it. I do not trust the computer estimate
The computer can calculate it better than you can. It’s doing the exact same formula you’re describing, except in real time. Exact fuel trims exact F/A ratios, exact rpm’s. If you don’t trust it, you might as well not trust your MAF, shift solenoid’s, wheel speed sensors, etc.
MY 2018 4x4 TRD SPORT TACO NOW IS DOING 15.9! IT USED TO BE 19.1 acoording to truck computer it has 65k miles- +++ I ADDED A SPRING BOOSTER AND IT WAS THE SAME, THEN MPG DROPPED- JUST A FEW MONTHS AGO- GOT NEW AIR FILTER - DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO- I have the sprint booster off and is still 15.9 to 15.1
has anyone noticed improved gas mileage in the fall? i have a 2021 Tacoma sr5 with a 6-foot bed....this past weekend i got up to 23.8 mpg here in North Jersey......best ever!

Can't complain about the MPG of my 2016 TRD Off Road 4x4 with stock size tires (Cooper AT3 4S). I've never tried a maximum MPG test under best conditions, but driving 150 mile round trips to my cabin in the summer here in Minnesota I've gotten a calculated 24 MPG while driving up to 75 mph on the highway and then several slow miles on dirt roads. And, that is carrying several hundred pounds of gear. My truck has about 67,000 miles on the odometer but I noticed the average MPG increased a bit after I had a transmission flush just prior to 60,000 miles. Of course, winter driving brings the average MPG as low as 17. I'll have to try a summer best conditions drive with a top speed of 60 and see how it does...I'm guessing upper 20's.
I’ve got 31” tires in the truck with 1” wheel spacers and I’m only getting 13mpg average with mainly city driving. I even put the pedal commander on to eco mode and that didn’t make any difference at all. I think I just have to live with it 😂
I got the sr5 2020 and get crappy gas milage. I drive like an old man too! Do t know why…is it about luck?! …new subject (for a show? ). Do the sr5 s have the connection available to add signal lights to the rear view mirrors on the doors? Can it be done?
I doubt the wiring is in the mirrors. Probably does exist in the cab to plug into. It would require adding new mirrors as well as wiring harnesses for each side. All said and done...pretty pricy I'd think.
I get terrible gas mileage on the interstate with cruise control. Only slightly better without. I take a 23 mile trip to work due to time/traffic which gives me excellent milage. I take a 28 mile trip home due to time/traffic which is on the interstate. I can have up to 7 to 8 mpg difference between the trips.
@@RobMotive 24+ on the way to work. Slower pace and more downhill. Going home, speed up and more uphill--16 to 19 on interstate. Hate watching my mileage tracker drop the whole way home. 2021 TRD sport. Love your videos! Recently started using pedal monster hoping that helps improve. Sorry that it's not Sprint booster but after researching, it seemed like the best outside of tuners.
I just put a backflip MX4 on my 2021 TRD Sport it gave me a extra 1.5 mpg getting 19 city 23 hwy @ 65 mph. Goes down to 21 mpg going 75 mpg. I Live in So Cal.
Try doing the numbers when u fill your tank and when u divide the gallons into the mileage, multify that number by 1.1 and that will account for the bigger tires!!!
In warn weather, doing mostly highway driving, I get 20-23mpg on my TRD Offroad. In the winter, I get approximately 17mpg. Using the remote start and the winter-mix gas, really kills the mileage.
One reason i got my 6 speed sport is because of fuel economy. I can easily get 9 l/100kms. Anytime manufacturers state autos get better fuel economy I gotta sigh.
While I have noticed some fluctuation in fuel economy in my 2018 Tacoma over the years with the time of year, fuel brand, highway road trip vs rural roads etc, there is only two instances that I noticed a permanent increase. 1) once my free oil changes ran out, I started doing my own oil changes. I use Mobil 1 full synthetic. 2) After I installed the sprint booster. Also, after 20,000 miles, I changed the rear differential lube to full synthetic, (not sure if it made a huge difference). To be fair, despite my list of mods approaching 30, the total added weight I've added is only around 120 pounds. My synopsis is that most people would benefit from full synthetic engine oil and a sprint booster. Note: I'm going to try non ethanol fuel next.
Just keep the highway speed just below 60 mph, or just below 1500rpms. Accelerate all you want up to 2000rpms, not more than that . *Do not* use your brakes; always let it slow down naturally to turn or to stop. Get 25mpg reliably. If you have larger tires, your fuel econometer is inaccurate if you don't have an accurizer on it to account for bigger tires. If you don't have one that accounts for larger tires, your economy is greater than what is listed.
I live in a hilly area in TN and around town I easily get 19 mpg. The little bit my wife drives it, the mileage drops to 17 mpg. On the road with me driving, 21/22 is normal. I have a 2020 TRD Off Road 4wd.
I have a 2017 Taco Off Road, and I get that mileage only if I am going max 55, and not many stops. On my drive to Boston, avg 75mph, I was getting 20mpg, but this was on the flat surface going through New York.
I've gotten up to a little over 24mpg in my 2wd TRD SPORT. It usually averages over 20 most trips. I have most of the same mods you have too. I do also have a bed cover and I hear that help mpg?
I bought a 2017 Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4 in August of last year with 31K miles on it. Driving around, I was getting ~385 miles per tank. Over the past few months, however, I've noticed the total miles I get out of my Taco has decreased. Now, I'm lucky to get ~350 miles per tank. I've been running 87 octane the whole time. This last fill-up I used 89 octane and that seems to have stretched it more some but I'm wondering if there's a problem. Any insight? I live in the Williamson County area in TN.
@@RobMotive Yeah I figured as much. I really noticed it around late January and figured maybe it was my driving style and not working in the same area anymore. But I didn't know if there was something mechanical that was common that I needed to address (I know the 2017s had that weird transmission computer issue that required a free software update from the dealership under warranty).
My computer is way off, so is my speedometer. Came this way from factory. You may have an improvement but I would suggest measuring at the pump using your GPS to get actual mileage readings.
I have a '15 Tacoma crewcab 4x4 /70K miles and it is getting terrible mileage. Yesterday it was just under 13mpg/town and 17 highway. That's 3 less than warm weather. I went from Costco 87 to 91 Chevron and it's still low. New plugs, filters proper tire pressure. The winter blend thing in Calif is one thing but 3mpg less? I'm 70 yo and don't drive like a red ass ape. What is going on? Anybody?
Hey Rob i have a 17 tacoma and just changed my tires from stock 16 rim to a 17 inches and bigger tire with no lift at all, and inoticed my mileage drop to 16 max any advice to improve mine?
I have a TRD ORD and did a test before and after on the front air dam. I added one, and I got about 20+ miles to every tank. Ugly, yes, works though...BTW two wheel drive is a few hundred pounds lighter that a 4w. That makes a difference. I am considering a sprint booster though, just for options on throttle angle. I don't want a tune, I believe Toyota does a good job of balancing reliability, economy and drivability. They also know the limits of all the sensors and the programming.
My new Tacoma ( Sr 4cyl ) is getting 21 . 1/21.8 mpg from 3mi when I tried it out to date ( 154 mi ) it's as bare bones , añd stock as it gets ( access cab )
15-16 mpg seems pretty low every for 4wheel drive, only thing I can think of is you just passed the breakin period, would be interesting how it is in long term driving. Keep us posted 😮
Hey Rob, I think it is the 2wd. I'm in jersey, with the same taco step up, but 4x4 and getting 14 mpg local driving. Also, I only drove it 574 miles 😂..... Keep up the great content and great videos 👐
I used to have a 2016 sr5 2 wheel drive double cab and I got that gauge to show over 27mpg I should have took a picture for proof. That’s driving on the freeway Hwy 5 flat surface before I hit the mountains of California. I traded for 2019 off road 4 wheel drive double cab, the best I can do is 20+mpg, my average is between 17 and 19mpg now, lol.
50/50 city/highway I average 22summer 18.7 winter. It seems to be directly related to your speed I drove to work in a snowstorm in 4 Wheel Dr. the whole way and averaged almost 21 miles a gallon at 50-60mph.
Hi Rob. I have 2017 SR5and I get 13,14 or 15 mpg. But on the highway doing 70 mph I’ve gotten 22.5 mpg. But I’ll admit you have to keep your foot out of it.
I have a 22 Tacoma with the 2.7 and I drive it for work 1000 to 1200 miles a week. I average on the good weeks 24.7 If it is an off week it drops to 22.8. I think in your case you are driving it easier with the addition of the boost
On my 2014 trd sport 4.0l 6 speed manual, I get about 14-16 mpg in the city and 25-27 highway keeping it about 65-70mph. During the winter it drops a bit.
RobMotive of course but I would say 90% is highway. You would think it would be better. Idk if it stuck I a weird gear. I notice when I’m going 70 it seems to struggle but when I’m at 80 it’s smooth and no in between shifts.
On my 2017 Toyota tacoma trd sport in the summer time i get 23 to 21mpg and in the winter time im getting 14 to 15 mpg. I notice every time i fill up. I get better gas mileage. Im in Canada Toronto. No sprint booster yet. Its coming soon.
Aloha and good morning Rob 🙏 🌄 ✨ ☺. Your SR5 isn't an Off-Road version. Plus, you have a 4 x 2 powertrain as you previously used a 4x4 Off-Road version which was very powerful to drive daily. Yet, you spent more on gas purchase before when you had the Off-Road version. These are some the reasons why you had an awesome gas economy .
Rob, best I ever done was 29 mpg with 2020 Limited Voodoo Blue last summer 8 miles after filling it up. Generally 24 to 25 during the summer about 22 to 23 mpg during winter with almost 30,000 miles on the dial.
My 21 TRD OR Manual gives 17.2 to 17.8 MPG 100% city driving. I calculate by filling up to top.. drive and refill and then miles/gallons. The display also shows the same MPG! The Atkinson cycle engine is a fuel efficient engine.
Rob, I too noticed an improvement on my mpg after installing the pedal commander on my ‘21 sr5. I live in Oregon with an average of 40 degree weather i went from a 16 average to Now averaging 19 mpg. I keep the pedal commander on sport 3+ *side note I love the look of your sr5 I will be placing an order on the same exact wheels as yours but in black for my super white
I got 22 on a couple tanks during the summer but I had to drive like a hypermiler and really concentrate on the mpg meter. Honestly it got annoying and I think I pissed off a few people behind me lol. Now it's winter and I warm my truck up every morning and I'm around 17.5
I think your 21 gets better gas mileage because it doesn't hunt gears like mine does I'm lucky to get 20 mpg I have 18 off road 4x4 automatic at one time I really was getting about 24mpg but had fuel pump recall and I get between 18 to 20mpg now .
My 2020 TRD Sport is all stock tires and suspension, and I get 21-23 mph on average. I'm satisfied with that.

22 Sport here. Can’t get better than 16.4…
Sounds like my 2018 Sport😬
Do you put 89 or 87 does one or the other matters. For a 2015 Taco
It’s a PreRunner V6 4.0L
I use 87👍
Could it be that it needed to break- in the engine to get better MPG?
Definitely helps👍
So far the best i've gotten is 24.5mpg on a 2019 4X4 SR5 access cab
Wow! That’s pretty good👍
I need answers no maybes, 00 tacoma with 2.7 m and highway tires was getting 34..my 19 trd off road is 11 to 15 not good with internet
There are many variables that can affect fuel economy. There is no definitive answer.
One reason i got my 6 speed sport is because of fuel economy.
I can easily get 9 l/100kms.
Anytime manufacturers state autos get better fuel economy I gotta sigh.
South Texas native here 🙋🏼♂️
Robstown/Alice area!
Nice👍
What grade gas do you use
87👍
I agree👍
The bed cover improving MPG’s is a myth. Many will claim it helps, but it’s simply not true😬
I get 21+ on my 21. Stock tires. No air dam. Love it.
(It May be the ceramic coating. LOL)
Lol! I wonder if you’d get 42mpg with two coats😬
I have an SR5 double cab V6 2wd short bed, bone stock, and I consistently get 21 to 23mpg. On the interstate, I get somewhere around 26 or 27.
Nice👍
That's what I get with stop and go driving!
I have a 2010 Taco, 4.0L AT 4x4, with 136k miles. I still get 20 mpg avg with city/hwy driving.
i get up to 22 or 23 on the hwy at times in my 19 Off-Road. Around in town i run around 15 mpg. All stock.
Most of my driving is around town 👍
What about your tires pressure?
Same as usual🤔
I bought a 2017 Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4 in August of last year with 31K miles on it. Driving around, I was getting ~385 miles per tank. Over the past few months, however, I've noticed the total miles I get out of my Taco has decreased. Now, I'm lucky to get ~350 miles per tank. I've been running 87 octane the whole time. This last fill-up I used 89 octane and that seems to have stretched it more some but I'm wondering if there's a problem. Any insight? I live in the Williamson County area in TN.
There are many variables that could cause this. From gasoline grade, mechanical changes to driving style and drivers themselves. Hard to say🤔
ALWAY USE 89 OR ABOVE
My computer is way off, so is my speedometer. Came this way from factory. You may have an improvement but I would suggest measuring at the pump using your GPS to get actual mileage readings.
I’ve checked speed against GPS and it’s spot on👍
Finally someone being honest about Tacoma fuel economy. My 2022 TRD off-road mpg stinks
It’s definitely not a hyper-miler😬
My 22 yrs OR 4x4 double cab automatic gets combined 19.2, on hwy close to 30..set cruise to 55-60..let’er rip tater chip
Anybody?
Sounds like you take good care of it. My money is on the cold weather and winter blend.
Hey Rob i have a 17 tacoma and just changed my tires from stock 16 rim to a 17 inches and bigger tire with no lift at all, and inoticed my mileage drop to 16 max any advice to improve mine?
Are you calculating it by hand? Given the larger tires, the truck calculation is incorrect.
@@RobMotive yes, I'm just going by what the mileage count says,
Good video. 2x4 and no big wheels 👍🏾
When I had a tacoma I got 16mpg combined. And that's with actual logs not the computer. One more than with the Tundra that I had previously.
Wow! That’s horrible 😬
What did you get before adding it🤔
I think you are on to something. With the Sprint Boost, the response is more fluid so you are more accurately feeding the motor the gas it needs.
For sure👍
My new Tacoma ( Sr 4cyl ) is getting
Thanks Elizardo👍
We’re in Jersey?

My SR5 dos 25 most of the time
I got the identical truck as yours, I get 17 but it's all city driving mainly from Edinburg to McAllen and back weekly
Mid grade she'll gas
Getting 23.4 to 23.8
3.5 ltr. 75 miles an hour
Mid grade all good gas!
Weather, wind direction, type gas, more green lights, effects your mileage. Sprint Booster, air dam, no effect at best.
I disagree.
50/50 city/highway I average 22summer 18.7 winter. It seems to be directly related to your speed I drove to work in a snowstorm in 4 Wheel Dr. the whole way and averaged almost 21 miles a gallon at 50-60mph.
Wow! That’s great especially in 4wd👍
21 off road avg 19-21 city/hwy mix
Hi Rob. I have 2017 SR5and I get 13,14 or 15 mpg. But on the highway doing 70 mph I’ve gotten 22.5 mpg. But I’ll admit you have to keep your foot out of it.
I drive 23 miles highway to work every morning with 23 mpg.
If I use the cruise control I only get 19 to 20!
I have a 22 Tacoma with the 2.7 and I drive it for work 1000 to 1200 miles a week. I average on the good weeks 24.7 If it is an off week it drops to 22.8. I think in your case you are driving it easier with the addition of the boost
Yup, I think so too👍
I'm thinking about buying a 2022 2.7 what do you get mpg in town
@@donkeacher8590 19 to 20 with easy acceleration. Heavy stop and go will be 18 to 19
@@donkeacher8590 19 to 20 with easy acceleration. Heavy stop and go will be 18 to 19
On my 2014 trd sport 4.0l 6 speed manual, I get about 14-16 mpg in the city and 25-27 highway keeping it about 65-70mph. During the winter it drops a bit.
Quite a range😬
I wished. My 2020 trd 4x4 (lifted with 33s) gets around 15mpg around town. May get 17 if I'm lucky lol.
Hi Rob, I'm averaging around 21 to 23. But I'm in constant stop and go. Still good .it may for sure have something to do with the sprint booster.
Even though they don’t make any claims regarding fuel economy I think it helps👍
I get 21 mpg in my 2016 Tacoma TRD Sport, long bed!
Im averaging 21.4 mpg cruising down the California Highway @ 70 MPH.
Wow lucky. I’m getting 16-18 average. With about 5k miles on the truck. Still fully stock. Idk why it’s so bad.
There are many factors. 🤔
RobMotive of course but I would say 90% is highway. You would think it would be better. Idk if it stuck I a weird gear. I notice when I’m going 70 it seems to struggle but when I’m at 80 it’s smooth and no in between shifts.
Probably all of the above and if you still had the original "skinny" tires it may have been a shade better
Maybe your newest truck is made cheaper, more plastic, thinner metal, and all the absent options your other trucks have had?
I don’t think so🤔
Well, you don't have that big of tires on the truck, like you had on your other one, and that makes a big difference!
True👍
Rob 21 tocoma TRD off-road and it may get 15 -.17 mpg
Wow. That’s horrible😬
2022 4x4 dclb OR here and am getting 21 mpg...
I got that once or twice on my 17’trd off-road
Isn't it supposed to get 21mpg?
Supposed to😬
On my 2017 Toyota tacoma trd sport in the summer time i get 23 to 21mpg and in the winter time im getting 14 to 15 mpg. I notice every time i fill up. I get better gas mileage. Im in Canada Toronto. No sprint booster yet. Its coming soon.
Wow! That’s quite a range😬
Yes i know
And its a manual transmission as well
Aloha and good morning Rob 🙏 🌄 ✨ ☺.
29 would be phenomenal 👍
What engine do you have in your Taco and is it 2WD or 4WD?
Scott it is a 6 cylinder and 4wd.
Scott, I actually took a screen shot of the mpg.
Do you want to sell it?
My 21 TRD OR Manual gives 17.2 to 17.8 MPG 100% city driving. I calculate by filling up to top.. drive and refill and then miles/gallons. The display also shows the same MPG! The Atkinson cycle engine is a fuel efficient engine.
Rob, I too noticed an improvement on my mpg after installing the pedal commander on my ‘21 sr5. I live in Oregon with an average of 40 degree weather i went from a 16 average to Now averaging 19 mpg. I keep the pedal commander on sport 3+
*side note I love the look of your sr5 I will be placing an order on the same exact wheels as yours but in black for my super white
Nice👍
30 mpg is target for purchase incentive Kentuckians.
I got 22 on a couple tanks during the summer but I had to drive like a hypermiler and really concentrate on the mpg meter. Honestly it got annoying and I think I pissed off a few people behind me lol. Now it's winter and I warm my truck up every morning and I'm around 17.5
Not bad for warming it up👍
I think your 21 gets better gas mileage because it doesn't hunt gears like mine does I'm lucky to get 20 mpg I have 18 off road 4x4 automatic at one time I really was getting about 24mpg but had fuel pump recall and I get between 18 to 20mpg now .
Could be🤔. I was very surprised 😬
Cruising at 60 will do that. I got up to 20mpg doing 60 on a rainy day. Usually get 15mpg. 2021 OR 4x4
