when you run your car on empty every time, it's possible for the pump to overheat, which can lead to a costly failure. as a reminder, It's always good to re-fill you gas tank at the 1/2 way point on gas gauge on instrument cluster.
I wonder if it also depends what kind of car you have because I would really want to know if all cars actually go a good amount of miles before it is actually empty
Running your car that low on gas overheats the fuel pump plus sucks all the crap from the bottom of the tank .You have just ruined your car. Way to go!
I actually did the similar but a safer method for my car. You all can also follow my technique. Method Fill up fuel tank to full, and reset the ometer for trip A to 0 km. And use your car for daily commute as usual until the fuel tank lights up. Go to the gas station and fill the fuel immediately as soon as the fuel light indicator pop up. Mark the the amount of liter that is require to fill up ur car (E.g my Mazda 3 needed 40L to make it full if I fill it when the fuel light indicator is on) Mark the kilomer that you had travel until you fill up the gas (E.g my Mazda can do up to 511 Km until the fuel light indicator shows) Read the total fuel capacity of your car in your owner manual (E.g Mazda 3 has fuel tank capacity of 51L) Now if you do the math this mean my car still has like (51L - 40L)11L of fuel in the tank when the fuel light indicator is on. NOW do the MATH (My Mazda can travel 511km for 40L of fuel so 511/40 = 12.77Km for every 1L of fuel So if I sill have 11L left in my tank (went he fuel light indicator is on) 11 x 12.77 = 140 km so my car can approximately do that much until all the fuel in the tank been used up after the fuel lights on.

Car manufacturers build in a 10-15% reserve in relation to the overall gas tank size. So for a Tacoma, that's about a 2-3 gallon reserve...
