P.S. What amazed the shit out of me is that Pepper has some fucking incredible downpicking chops - almost like James Hetfield.
Love that first riff and the way Kirk plays the ascending single notes while Pepper does a slow bend. These guys come up with some great rhythm parts. Very sludgy, and yet very melodic and catchy at the same time.

Pepper and Kirk are such a massive tone team!
The two best sludge metal guitar dual guitarists of all time. Down II, Bustle in your Hedgerow, hands down doesn't get any better than that. A top 5 five best metal album ever. Fuck the critics.

They are playing it in C# here. When they are doing their little chug chug thing they are doing power chords so they are not in Dropped B but in C# instead.

Me too, but I met Bobby at the Superjoint show and he's a really cool guy, and he can play all the Down stuff just as good as Kirk.

@MyScaryScrotum Rarely do people refer to the actual notes on the fretboard when using different tunings. They usually refer to them as if they were playing in E Standard. It's easier that way. I do the same thing (playing in D Standard, but talking about E Standard chord and note positions).

@BokoRocks777 He actually never auditioned. James wanted him to try out, but Pepper never had any intentions to be their bassist. He came to visit James for the Superbowl that year and just watched others audition - that's why he appeared on the DVD.

@bdoginit01 James did ask him first if he could fill in for bassist. They became friends when Down opened for Metallica on one of their tours in the 90s.

What's wrong with a low B? They use baritone guitars, so they're meant to tune that low. It just sounds bad because it's not properly recorded.

@Charbok12 Not the bass player (the bass player in Down is Rex Brown from Pantera). Pepper Keenan (the guy on the right) was asked by James Hetfield to audition for bassist (you can see him in Some Kind Of Monster documentary).

I'd say it's not over distorted, but the EMGs in that guitar definitely contribute a lot of compression to his sound. It sounds thinner and more sterile than Pepper's guitar. I have EMG's and I'm not too fond of them either. :(

@TheShredress Have you heard of bands Pantera, Corrosion of Conformity, Crowbar and Eyehategod? All the guys in Down are from those bands.

Sound of the riffs only sound almost better than on the record with the band kicking in... What amps are they playing... guitar sounds amazing... great distortion but not fuzzy and noisy

haha Meshuggah are good in small doses but after 10 minutes it gets a bit tedious for those of us with an ear for music
