Hey guys, I just posted a NEW ZOO TOUR video to the channel! Make sure to go check it out and let me know in the comment section which zoo you think is better!! Thanks for watching :)
just got this in my recommendations and glad to see auckland zoo getting some love! as a biology student in the city it’s great to see the appreciation of aucklands deification to the zoo as a vessel for conservation and learning as opposed to entertainment. some of the pronunciation gave me a laugh too! hope you enjoyed the hikes as well as auckland has a pretty solid range of hikes and reserves like tiritiri matangi and shakespeare regional park which i feel you would have loved. ma te wa!
Auckland zoo was amazing. Happy to hear from another biology student!! I did get to visit Tiritiri Mantangi Island, the video is up on my channel be sure to take a look when you get a chance :)
The zoo has gone through some really tough times recently so nice to see some great content! Obviously COVID really damaged their potential to stay open, and then last year we had some HUGE flooding across NZ, and some of the zoo's enclosures were completely wiped out, some are still being rebuilt and may never open again. But they've done amazing to keep it going as one of the best zoos! We love it.
Don’t do it lol. Don’t come to Auckland dude probably get shot in town. It’s not a joke here, anyone who says otherwise is not a kiwi and definitely not a person who goes outside and sees the condition of this place. Kiwis are leaving for Australia for obvious reasons. The smart, capable ones anyway. Only the country is beautiful but there aren’t any jobs out there for the good honest folk.
I stopped going to zoos years ago because I always got so sad seeing the animals in small enclosures. But it looks like Auckland zoo has done a lot of work to make things the best they can be for the animals. I may finally go back! Thanks for showing us.
I agree with you. Even now I struggle ethics and cage sizes of some animals mainly bears, big cats and monkeys/primates. But most zoos around the world seem to be making big changes especially behind the scenes, taking steps in the right direction to better enrich the care for the animals.
Auckland Zoo has changed SOOOO much since I was there. The lab/vet station was never there. The Orangutan and ape enclosure never used to be that big, etc. Holy crap, I've got to go back!!!
It’s so nice to see some appreciation for Auckland Zoo! In case you didn’t see the tiger exhibit there was a new baby tiger! If it were closed at the time it could have been because of that :)
So hyped to see NZ zoos get the attention they deserve. Most of the zoos here in Aotearoa focus more on conservation than entertainment. The Christchurch zoo, Oarana Park also talks alot about conservation and the zoologists who work there, will tell visitors of the park and the students who visit, why some of the animals are there and will actually talk about why they don't make the enclosures for entertainment (I still remember that speech from my senior year biology field trip). The zoos work with the Department of conservation and they work with the universities to help with teaching students and for making the animals as comfortable as they can. I also believe that they offer their facilities to help rescue injured wildlife and help to rehabilitate animals and release them back into the wild. Also, side note, love that you got to see the Kea, but you would have probably seen signs to not bring food into their enclosure, this is because they are known to be myschevious and will steal the food from visitors. I once saw a Kea steal an ice cream from a child while at one of the zoos. They love to cause chaos wherever they are. I also don't know if you saw them, but there is a kiwi look alike! They are called weka and tourists alwas confuse them for kiwis 😅
The kea can damage your car if you see them in the wild in the South Island so you have to shoo them away they are a like mischievous bunch of teenagers.
Kia Ora! I'm so glad to see you enjoyed our Zoo! I went a few weekends ago after not having been for about 7 years and the changes were absolutely mindblowing. The tigers walking across your head was unbelievable and it was my first time seeing a cub. Such a magical moment :) And the large primate exhibits were insane! In New Zealand we take conservation of wildlife and environment quite seriously so it's fantastic to hear that those values reflect in our Zoo compared to overseas ones! Kia kaha :)
Great video. Thanks for sharing. I was thinking the same thing you said, we can't just rock up and see the animals sitting there, bored and un-naturally. We, the humans, have to slow down, be patient, and watch them in a more natural environment. I totally support conservation zoos and parks. ❤
Thank you for showcasing our zoo, they have come a long way! For example, when my dad was growing up (60s/70s) there used to be polar bears but because of their enclosure they would always walk backs and forwards (exactly the same walk and everything), the elephants used to be in that cafe near the tortoise, and when I was a kid (2000s/10s) I remember the tigers were in a deep pit near the red pandas. So they've definitely done a lot to improve the zoo over the passed decade or so!
I am born and raised in Auckland, with very little experience on zoos outside of Auckland, but I also haven't been to the zoo in several years it's amazing to have it claimed as one of the best zoos
Fun fact, if you came across a more brave wood pigeon in one of the large aviaries (big green and white borb), her name is Rui! She likes to sit around the "do not touch" sign, because thats where keepers will give her treats :D
Fun fact, we did actually use to have a bird of prey not that long ago. The Haast's eagle, the biggest eagle to ever live and one of the biggest birds of prey. Up to the arrival of Polynesian settlers a couple of thousand years ago. But after the extinction of the moa (Our giant flightless bird and the eagles main food source) it went extinct! Not long ago not even we were all that safe! I'm glad to hear you enjoyed our zoo by the way, us kiwi's put a lot of emphasis on the beauty of nature and it's preservation. So we try our best to give our animals everything we can!
@@Esper54 just going to clarify something, Polynesian settlers haven't been in new zealand for thousands of years, only a few hundred more than White colonials

Auckland zoo is probably the coolest thing in the entire city, too bad you have to be 15 or above to go alone without an adult 😭. I actually got to go into all of those vet buildings and even in the Elephant enclosure when I was younger. Whilst in there I got to feed Burma. Amazing Zoo.

Hi @Fin9315, really appreciate your kind comment and I am glad to hear your are enjoying the videos. I did get to visit the Sea Life Aquarium during my stay in Auckland it was a really nice facility unfortunately I didnt have enough footage for a separate video but I included some bonus clips at the end the end of this Zoo tour video :)
The zoo has changed massively since I last went there maybe 45 years ago, cages everywhere in those days, I distinctly remember an orangutan in a very small cage smoking cigarette butts that people threw at him, I remember I loved the zoo then, but it seems like it is a much better place for the animals and the visitors these days.
I think its safe to say every zoo has changed for the better from 45 years ago. Auckland zoo has definitely redeemed its self with that orangutan exhibit and many of the exhibits they have on display.
@@ECO-logy they are currently of an age where adult outings aren't part of our life yet. Boo at these early independence years. With rainbow kids I won't be getting grandkids either. So, I will have to wait a few years, until it is even better, and they hang out with me again.
I just came across your channel, thanks for showing the zoo, ive lived in new Zealand for the past 24yrs and ive never been to the zoo or the aquarium, now i know where im taking my female friend for her birthday next month, im going to surprise her and take her to both places and not tell her haha
Last time i was there my favourite exhibit was the night creatures exhibit! It was dark and all the glass windows looked into the enclosures of different night creatures, like kiwi's!
Wow, awesome to see people giving Auckland zoo some love! I hope you enjoyed it, and in the 12 times (not actually, maybe 5 times?) I’ve been there, I have never seen an arowana, maybe it’s new? It was awesome watching this! I just wished they still had chameleons
It might be a new exhibit, its in the building near the end of the orangutan exhibit (im forgetting but its called something like the south american building) I saw footage of the building and I really wanted to see it in person but the building was closed … no arowana for me!
if you get to go down to Christchurch they have a pretty good zoo as well called Orana it's the only open-range zoo in New Zealand so it's quite a bit different. Wellington Zoo is also pretty good
I live in NZ and now want to visit this zoo. I cannot believe I have never done so. We have a wildlife park in Chch but it is very sad and uncomfortable to see compared to what is offered in Auckland. I love seeing animals having plenty of foliage and enrichment.
I know, from having my own small pet tortoise, that they often dirty their water, but it seems that a zoo would make an effort to give their tortoises CLEAN water! 🐢 Otherwise, this is an incredible zoo, and i want to go visit!
Maybe the camera did not pick it up too well but make no mistake the water was very very clean for the Galapagos tortoises and the amount of keepers I saw around their enclosure definitely makes me believe they work round the clock to keep those torts happy and healthy! I would be inclined to be more critical of fecal matter or “stale” water than I am of clarity or “dirt content”. 230 million years on the planet I am sure a little dirty water will not bother them much, especially when we see the mud wallows they use in their native environment.
The tortoises have additional pools in their indoor areas. We have a lot of rain in Auckland, so there will be continual runoff going into their outdoor pools, making them look dirty
if you have a chance to visit the kakariki enclosure i as a new zealander would highly reccomend it the enclosure is kind of hidden making it very calm and secluded if you sit still the kakariki might even land right next to you
Saving this comment and adding those two zoos right up on my list! Thanks for the suggestion. I will have a behind the scenes of the toronto zoo video coming very shortly! Stay tuned for that :)
im from New zealand and went to auckland zoo last year for my birthday and along the rooes i saw a mother carry her baby and the dad getting lettuce for all three of them
great vid, ive lived in Auckland for 35 years, been to the zoo all through the years, about 20 years ago those little monkeys, the ones that are small enough to fit in your hand when they are young and mischievous had a poorly designed cage where they escaped so often the keepers just left it decided to just bribe them with anything they wanted to stay, numerous times i would go straight to their cage with a punnet of strawberries and a couple of them would jump out of the gap in the cage and maul me with their tiny hands and strong gripping tails,, they would eat a strawberry or 2 then run back in the cage,, a year later they had sealed the cage ,, now with the new layout i wouldnt have a clue where they are, the galapagos tortoise enclosure used to be a small sand covered mound with an ankle height chain you could walk right up to them and touch them , but there were signs saying not to, but i definitely have pics of me as a kid sitting next to one of those big fellows , im glad they got a better enclosure with a wallow hole and some greenery cause that sandy mound was depressing
That is hilarious!! Thanks for sharing, that put a smile on my face. Even I was a little confused with the layout but I was equally immersed in the design of the zoo.
The Auckland Zoo is amazing! I went there almost all of my childhood, it was probably some of the best experiences I ever had! Fun Fact: My Father’s coworker designed the ropes for the orangutans to walk on 🤯
As a Kiwi it never occurred to me that the little monkeys not being meshed in would be dangerous to them haha. We do have hawks in NZ but not in a city centre.
It was really cool to see at the Auckland Zoo. Because here in North America there are alot more species of birds of prey that would gladly take one for a snack if given the opportunity!
It once had Polar Bears but realised bears in captivity suffered too much psychologically so never got them in again. Really great modern zoos know they should put the animals above human entertainment.
Orangs are the most arboreal ape. They really need space to climb so the installation of the canopy walk was designed to give them as much climbing room as possible. Far more than a single enclosure could give them. And yes we have mostly birds and reptiles.....only two native mammals, both small insectivorous bats, so not a lot of native "animals". Theres a lot of introduced mammals tho....sadly mostly pests.
The reason you wouldn't have seen large animals in the New Zealand exhibit is that before humans made their way here and introduced various species. The only mammals here were a couple of species of small bats. There were various reptiles and some very large insects. But a large variety of bird species. A lot of them were adapted to living on the ground because of the lack of predators.
Hi @garythomson713 thanks for the comment. You are 100% correct. Keep an eye out for my next video where I try to cover exactly what you are detailing!
100% not as many species at other zoos but the quality at which these animals were being kept and the care that has gone into the design of the enclosures really blew me away. Its much better than the stuff I have seen at other zoos that seemingly have “every animal on the planet” but I am probably biased.
I’ve been too the zoo ever since I was a in nz child their animals were not many their and they used to not have a vet centre and they didn’t have those climbing towers I never seen the new animals that they had I saw the flamingo once but they got taken away a year later.
They were originally both scheduled to leave at a similar time, but the zoo Burma was originally meant to go to rescinded. For Anjalee's health they wanted her moved regardless so she had a higher chance of getting pregnant as IVF had not worked and pregnancies improve their long term health. They were different species of elephant to each other and not fully bonded so while Burma not having a fellow elephant isn't ideal, she gets additional time with her keepers and last update I saw she is meant to move later this year 😊 There are several posts on the zoo website going over the decision process and progress updates about moving the elephants
Story time that nobody asked for!✨ So, I was with my older sis and our friends. We went to the Baboon exhibit and saw this little Baby Baboon. My sister made eye contact with that baby, the baby Baboon started screaming at the top of its lungs and the adults heard…. The adults looked like a tomato. There was this water barrier between the exhibit and us. So the Baboons couldn’t jump over and do anything. The adults tried to jump, but landed in the shallow end. So thankfully no one was hurt. Also they lions tried to come up to us and gave us the death stare 💀

I did get to visit the Sea Life Aquarium during my stay in Auckland it was a really nice facility unfortunately I didnt have enough footage for a separate video but I included some bonus clips at the end the end of this Zoo tour video :)
Thanks bro this is awesome.
Glad you like it
The zoo has changed massively since I last went there maybe 45 years ago, cages everywhere in those days, I distinctly remember an orangutan in a very small cage smoking cigarette butts that people threw at him, I remember I loved the zoo then, but it seems like it is a much better place for the animals and the visitors these days.
I think its safe to say every zoo has changed for the better from 45 years ago. Auckland zoo has definitely redeemed its self with that orangutan exhibit and many of the exhibits they have on display.
Kiwis! Assemble!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the comment
That was great thanks. Wish i could visit
Thank you my friend. Hopefully one day you can witness it :)
I literally went here yesterday because of this video so thanks! 😄 and great vid
Super awesome comment! I hope it was a great zoo visit for you :)
Awe this is such a cute little review. Makes me proud to be from here :’)
Such an awesome comment! Thank you!
I live in Wellington. I had no idea Auckland Zoo was so good. Wish I'd known that when my kids were young.
Definitely a great experience for kids but also very adult friendly and would be a fantastic day outing
Sounds like an awesome day out! You will have a great time.
Modern zoos are about conservation. So they make the enclosures for the animals to have the best life. If you get to see them it’s a bonus .
100%
I loved this video!
Thanks for the comment
Ah! you went to Kelly Tarltons as well? Ka Pai! Awesome video!
I sure did! Thank you!
i was thinking since when did they move the whole kelly tarltons to auckland zoo?? hahaha
Last time i was there my favourite exhibit was the night creatures exhibit! It was dark and all the glass windows looked into the enclosures of different night creatures, like kiwi's!
I think this one is in the video and it was an incredible section
Wow, awesome to see people giving Auckland zoo some love! I hope you enjoyed it, and in the 12 times (not actually, maybe 5 times?) I’ve been there, I have never seen an arowana, maybe it’s new? It was awesome watching this! I just wished they still had chameleons
It might be a new exhibit, its in the building near the end of the orangutan exhibit (im forgetting but its called something like the south american building) I saw footage of the building and I really wanted to see it in person but the building was closed … no arowana for me!
I am a new Zealander and I agree Auckland zoo is amazing
Sweet!
What camera do you use? amazing quality!
Its an iphone 11
The Auckland zoo is amazing. Me and my family go there lots. I like your channel ❤
It really was amazing. Thank you for the kind comment :)
Heeeyyyy
How was nz????
Ive been at auckland zoo millions of times!
Glad u loved it
New Zealand was incredible, I just wish I had more time!!
@@ECO-logy If you ever revist
Go to Rotorua, it smells like egg :3
Are you planning on going to Wellington Zoo? Haven’t been in a while but it was pretty cool last time I went!
I wish unfortunately im not in NZ anymore and I am now back home in Canada
@@ECO-logy Oh well! Thanks for visiting, this video was great!
my father works at the zoo, I love going here so much. I go every weekend :D
What happened to the seal enclosure there’s been no seal for the longest time. Are they going to bring seals back??
@@katyngah-ere4942 I'm pretty sure they are bringing them back, it's just a change to enclosure, from what I've heard.
When I was there, they had the kekeno on display. Not sure what has happened since.
You are super lucky to have your dad working there, it was an incredibly clean and well cared for zoo
if you get to go down to Christchurch they have a pretty good zoo as well called Orana it's the only open-range zoo in New Zealand so it's quite a bit different. Wellington Zoo is also pretty good
Thanks for sharing this, I wish I knew about Orana while I was in New Zealand. Unfortunately I’m back home now. Maybe next time :)
I was here yesterday, oh my gosh
Thanks for the comment
thank you for this video, for sharing this with the people. from palmerston north new zealand. stay safe in your travels man
Thank you my friend! I am glad you enjoyed the video! It was awesome
I have been there before and I love it and I live in nz Auckland
Sweet!
I need to go backkkk! Last time i went there the vet thing was never there
You should definitely go visit!
Wellington zoo is amazing too
Thank you, i will have to check it out!
Omg I live in Auckland and I love this zoo
Thanks for the comment!
I live in NZ and now want to visit this zoo. I cannot believe I have never done so. We have a wildlife park in Chch but it is very sad and uncomfortable to see compared to what is offered in Auckland. I love seeing animals having plenty of foliage and enrichment.
Definitely try to visit if you can!
Visited it for the first Time ever in February 2024 ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
So awesome!
thanks for the video, ill have to go now!!!
You definitely should!
thank you brother for sharing my country
My pleasure! It was amazing!
Cool New Zealand got a good vid and my dad works there and he says hi and so does the flamingo named after me :3
This is such an awesome comment! Thanks for leaving it for me to read! Tell your dad and the flamingos I said hi back :)
Good to see you in nz
Thank you my friend
finally someone in nz
:)
We have a lot of rain in Auckland, so there will be continual runoff going into their outdoor pools, making them look dirty
if you have a chance to visit the kakariki enclosure i as a new zealander would highly reccomend it the enclosure is kind of hidden making it very calm and secluded if you sit still the kakariki might even land right next to you
Oh man I wish i knew about this when i was there!
Fun fact the kakariki is new Zealand's only burrowing parrot
Very cool orangutan exhibit.
It really was! Thanks for the comment
Good Zoo, San Diego Zoo and Australia Zoo would be top 2
Saving this comment and adding those two zoos right up on my list! Thanks for the suggestion. I will have a behind the scenes of the toronto zoo video coming very shortly! Stay tuned for that :)
@@ECO-logynext time your in Oz go to Adelaide zoo
im from New zealand and went to auckland zoo last year for my birthday and along the rooes i saw a mother carry her baby and the dad getting lettuce for all three of them
That sounds like a pretty neat sighting!
great vid, ive lived in Auckland for 35 years, been to the zoo all through the years, about 20 years ago those little monkeys, the ones that are small enough to fit in your hand when they are young and mischievous had a poorly designed cage where they escaped so often the keepers just left it decided to just bribe them with anything they wanted to stay, numerous times i would go straight to their cage with a punnet of strawberries and a couple of them would jump out of the gap in the cage and maul me with their tiny hands and strong gripping tails,, they would eat a strawberry or 2 then run back in the cage,, a year later they had sealed the cage ,, now with the new layout i wouldnt have a clue where they are, the galapagos tortoise enclosure used to be a small sand covered mound with an ankle height chain you could walk right up to them and touch them , but there were signs saying not to, but i definitely have pics of me as a kid sitting next to one of those big fellows , im glad they got a better enclosure with a wallow hole and some greenery cause that sandy mound was depressing
That is hilarious!! Thanks for sharing, that put a smile on my face. Even I was a little confused with the layout but I was equally immersed in the design of the zoo.
The Auckland Zoo is amazing! I went there almost all of my childhood, it was probably some of the best experiences I ever had! Fun Fact: My Father’s coworker designed the ropes for the orangutans to walk on 🤯
That is an amazing fun fact! Thanks for sharing
100% i did not know they had bears before
NZ REF???? I LOVE THIS ZOO OMG
Thanks for the comment
the whale skeleton was cool, if only u got to see the real thing😅
I wish so too!
You have to go to Kaikoura for whales.
Worth going back here? I live about ~5 minutes away from the Zoo.
Definitely worth it!
You no film our Merecats 😮
No I didnt see them
Orangs are the most arboreal ape.
You are correct!
i go to auckland zoo loads bcuz i live in nz
my fav exhibit is the otter exhibit, cuz they CUTE
Otters are awesome
@@ECO-logyI agree
I went to that zoo with my cousins! tho I don’t live in Auckland I live in Christchurch
Thanks for the comment
One time i was there, I got to feed the giraffes, otters, and the otters hugged me. 😂
Lucky!
Looks like a modern zoo aswell
100%
The reason you wouldn't have seen large animals in the New Zealand exhibit is that before humans made their way here and introduced various species. The only mammals here were a couple of species of small bats. There were various reptiles and some very large insects. But a large variety of bird species. A lot of them were adapted to living on the ground because of the lack of predators.
Hi @garythomson713 thanks for the comment. You are 100% correct. Keep an eye out for my next video where I try to cover exactly what you are detailing!

Haha that made me laugh!
I once gave a random kid a concussion in the peep holes at the meerkat exhibit because I was trying to be nice and she wanted to see the meerkats
What a story! Thanks for the comment
I’ve been around 1 years ago not much animals there!
100% not as many species at other zoos but the quality at which these animals were being kept and the care that has gone into the design of the enclosures really blew me away. Its much better than the stuff I have seen at other zoos that seemingly have “every animal on the planet” but I am probably biased.
pretty sure that loud bird you heard was a tīeke/saddleback
You are correct! I got to see some in the wild on Tiritiri Island. Theres a video on my channel about the island too.
I’ve been too the zoo ever since I was a in nz child their animals were not many their and they used to not have a vet centre and they didn’t have those climbing towers I never seen the new animals that they had I saw the flamingo once but they got taken away a year later.
Thanks for the comment
It's sad Aljaree went back to Australia and Burma's only here now 😭
I think they are going to be moving Burma too
They were originally both scheduled to leave at a similar time, but the zoo Burma was originally meant to go to rescinded. For Anjalee's health they wanted her moved regardless so she had a higher chance of getting pregnant as IVF had not worked and pregnancies improve their long term health. They were different species of elephant to each other and not fully bonded so while Burma not having a fellow elephant isn't ideal, she gets additional time with her keepers and last update I saw she is meant to move later this year 😊
There are several posts on the zoo website going over the decision process and progress updates about moving the elephants
Story time that nobody asked for!✨
So, I was with my older sis and our friends.
Awesome story time! Thanks for sharing :)
I wonder if jacob-hoff the vet is still there
Unfortunately not. Richard retired about 15 years ago
