    I remember the Polar Bear too in the 1970s...there were also some normal bears and lions, I think where the Sumatran tiger enclosure is now. Then once the lions went, they had a couple of Hyenas. I remember the ape enclosure being just a cage and they looked so sad being locked in there. At least with the newer enclosures they have a little more freedom to move around using the overheard ropes. Even though I now live in Otago, I grew up in Auckland and still enjoy visiting the zoo when I'm back up there.

    Thank you for showcasing our zoo, they have come a long way! For example, when my dad was growing up (60s/70s) there used to be polar bears but because of their enclosure they would always walk backs and forwards (exactly the same walk and everything), the elephants used to be in that cafe near the tortoise, and when I was a kid (2000s/10s) I remember the tigers were in a deep pit near the red pandas. So they've definitely done a lot to improve the zoo over the passed decade or so!

    • @ECO-logy
      @ECO-logy 21 день назад

      Thats a great question! We are not too sure whats going on and thats part of the reason why I am here, to better understand why some turtles in the population are exhibiting cases of extreme growth in both body size and more importantly head size! Some turtles like the one in the video are huge with massive heads and others are completely normal and we need to figure out why!

    Story time that nobody asked for!✨ So, I was with my older sis and our friends. We went to the Baboon exhibit and saw this little Baby Baboon. My sister made eye contact with that baby, the baby Baboon started screaming at the top of its lungs and the adults heard…. The adults looked like a tomato. There was this water barrier between the exhibit and us. So the Baboons couldn’t jump over and do anything. The adults tried to jump, but landed in the shallow end. So thankfully no one was hurt. Also they lions tried to come up to us and gave us the death stare 💀

    So hyped to see NZ zoos get the attention they deserve. Most of the zoos here in Aotearoa focus more on conservation than entertainment. The Christchurch zoo, Oarana Park also talks alot about conservation and the zoologists who work there, will tell visitors of the park and the students who visit, why some of the animals are there and will actually talk about why they don't make the enclosures for entertainment (I still remember that speech from my senior year biology field trip). The zoos work with the Department of conservation and they work with the universities to help with teaching students and for making the animals as comfortable as they can. I also believe that they offer their facilities to help rescue injured wildlife and help to rehabilitate animals and release them back into the wild. Also, side note, love that you got to see the Kea, but you would have probably seen signs to not bring food into their enclosure, this is because they are known to be myschevious and will steal the food from visitors. I once saw a Kea steal an ice cream from a child while at one of the zoos. They love to cause chaos wherever they are. I also don't know if you saw them, but there is a kiwi look alike! They are called weka and tourists alwas confuse them for kiwis 😅
