Tiritiri matangi is a hidden gem that people always miss .the tuatara can also shrink its skeletal frame to conserve energy in times of short food supply
thank you for reminding me that we kiwi's take for granted just how amazing our country is. to see you in so much glee of our environment is just really humbling. thank you brother
I wish I had more time in New Zealand to of done the over night stay! Kiwis and geckos were so high on my list, so many things I didnt get to experience! Maybe one day ill be back :)
Yes should definitely visit!! My video did not do it any justice. Tuataras as so spectacular, I never thought in my wildest dreams I would see one in the wild! Happy to hear my excitement was contagious!
@@ECO-logyTuatara is already plural, saying ‘tuataras’ is like saying ‘sheeps’. There is no letter S in te reo Māori so none of our native animals with Māori names should be pluralised with an s 😊

Hi Paul, I wish I could tell you but its been over a year and I have simply forgot however the guides are extremely knowledgeable and I would really just express to them how much you want to see them and they will point you in the right direction. Also some guides are more knowledgeable than others so don’t be afraid to ask around. I saw my Tuatara’s in the last 10 minutes before the ferry was leaving back to the mainland all because I asked one more guide if they had any spots! Good luck! Let me know if you see one :)
Thank you JasonEcologist, I did try some spotlighting on the mainland but have since realized that because of all the invasive species your chances are slim to none :(
Wow, I can actually see this island from my house and I see the light house at night. I didn’t know it had all this nature. A must visit I think. Actually my profile pic is the facing towards the island and my sunrise.
That must be one awesome view you have! Definitely do the trip, there are amazing guides that will tell you everything about the island, the ferry ride is fun, pack a lunch and you are good to go!!!
Not sure if this is of interest but if you are here in summer and do the Cape Brett Hike, there is a fish sanctuary partway along (Deepwater Cove), and really common to see sea lions at the lighthouse dock 😊 not to mention the beaches are beautiful - Oke bay especially.
Thank you so much for the comment, I am back home in Canada. I only had 5 days in New Zealand so I definitely tried to make the most of it! This place you suggested sounds incredible, I wish i knew about it before
You can book to stay overnight on Tiri Tiri Matangi . At least you used to be able to. Fairly basic accommodation. Or you can join the volunteer brigade to do the same. I can’t believe you didn’t see any Takahe. There were so many when I visited but I must admit it was many years ago. Great that you found the Tuatara though.
Chur bro, nice vid and I actually saw a, well i think it was a little blue penguin, but it was differently a little penguin. I was on a jet boat ride up at whitiangi to Cathedral Cove and saw that, little penguin swimming past, not everyday you see a penguin on a jet boat and first wild penguin i had seen.😊❤❤❤
So envious that you saw a Tuatara in the wild! That's so cool!
Right!!!! I was so stoked to see 3 individuals! Something straight out of a movie

Super hidden gem, surprised it is not promoted more. I was lucky to stumble across it during my stay in NZ!

You are more than welcome! I am guilty of doing the same with some of the places I have lived. The grass always looks greener on the other side.
You are totally right, it's an awesome island. Well worth trying to book a spot and stay overnight for the kiwis

A fine day in Aotearoa and you didn't bring sunscreen...hope you've got some aloe for that burn today
Thankfully I did not get sun burned at all!
What track were you walking when you saw the Tuatara. I’m going to be there in February and like you hope to see these cool critters!

You're the best! Glad you are enjoying the content.
the island looks beautiful!!
It was incredible!!!
Great video the penguins were so cool!
I think so too!
For future reference, a lot of the gecko species you would encounter in Auckland would be arboreal and best spotted at night doing spotlighting.

Hey man i would love to see you go to the Ti point retile zoo😊
Maybe one day! Where is it located?
@@ECO-logy its up north and it just called Ti point 😊
Ive always wondered what the last bird was named. Variable oystercatcher

Cool video man. Shame u didn’t get to see any Takehe’s
I did get to see only 3 but I didnt get any good video footage or photos! Glad you enjoyed the video my friend.

Oh cool! It would be so awesome to swim with them in the water. I know places in south africa where the penguins swim around you in the water.
