- Hello everyone!
Marooned on an isolated island! We went to Tiritiri Matangi for a one-night stay but got to stay for a stressful bonus night due to the high winds making it unsafe for transport.
Such an incredible place with so many beautiful native New Zealand birds!
Thanks for watching!

This is the Jewel of Auckland.
So lovely to see it again through your eyes.
Tiri Tiri Matangi is "Tossed by the winds" in English.
You sure did get the full treatment.
Took my kids there almost thirty years ago.
The bush is noticable more developed.
I must take my family again.
It was a wonderful time. If the weather was perfect we could have swam at a less rocky beach. We had to pick one on the other side of the island that blocked the wind.
Kia ora Becca, glad to see you and your family are safe, well and enjoying one of those hidden gems of Auckland Tirtiri o Matangi. Untouched, lots of native flora and fauna therefore lots of wildlife like Tui and Kereru/Kuku (wood pigeon) For what it’s worth, your pronunciation of Te Reo Maori is not that bad, trust me.
Rule of thumb though - the vowels have a short and long sound Ka (car) and ONLY change in sound is when you join two vowels together Pai (pie) and Tui (too we), both vowel sound must flow together yet, still be individually distinctive. For instance “kia koutou” (Co-Toe) Once you get your tongue around that you will definitely see the improvement. 5mins a day, every morning or every evening (your choice) practicing and I promise that by 2023, you will be able to pronounce any Maori (are-or) word. Remember, it won’t happen overnight but, it will happen and practice always makes perfect… Safe travels, hei konei ra
Such a beautiful place!
I need to keep working on my Te Reo.
Thankyou Becca for sharing your journey and your beautiful Son. I'm moving home to New Zealand after 45 years in Australia. Your videos have given me the courage I needed to make the jump!!!! Arrival June 2022.
Oh wow! I hope it goes well, it’s not a perfect place, but there are so many great things here!
Well, that surprise turned out to be one big adventure! Character building and all that 😉
So sweet that you arranged the surprise, Billy. Bet you were glad to see the ferry! See you next week.
Oh ya, I guess if it wasn’t a surprise we would have brought more food!
It is lovely to see the island again - I spent a weekend there with friends a few years ago, doing some volunteer work on track maintenance. I didn't spot any kiwi, but I did spend an awfully long time tracking a pāteke, trying to convince myself that it had a long beak (which, of course, it didn't!) Having lived in Aotearoa all my life, it has taken me a very long time to finally see kiwi in the wild, so I'm stoked that you guys got to. The shot of your wee boy wandering along behind some takahē is particularly delightful - given that takahē were presumed extinct for many years, it isn't a common experience for kids to see them.
We only managed to see one because a volunteer burst into the cabin yelling she had seen one and where to find it! Lucky us!! And I can’t believe they were presumed extinct! I didn’t know that.
Wow what an adventure! I guess not everyone can say they've been stranded on a desert island, 😁 but yes the food situation would have been stressful. It looks like a beautiful place to visit. Thanks for sharing your trip!
It was such a beautiful trip! One I don’t think we’ll be forgetting anytime soon 😅
Love how you labelled all the birds, great video
This video was so fun to make! I really loved learning about so many native birds 😊
Yes... the wind plays a real part in the access to those islands... we head to Rakino a lot.... a neighboring island to tiri and the weather can change so quickly.
It’s pretty scary to have something so out of your control happen like that!
Wow, what an experience ✨✨✨it did my soul good to see the beautiful island .. well done for taking everything in your stride..
Billy did a wonderful job organising a memorable surprise for you.🛳🏊♀️🥯🌬🌳👨👩👦thank you for sharing your adventures 🙏
We had a great time even with the uncertainty. Would got back again, but would also bring extra food! 😅. Thanks for watching!
How amazing even if it was stressful...thanks for sharing. One for the memories for you.
Looking back on it now I’m questioning why I was stressed out so much 😂
I look forward to your videos every Thursday! Keep up the great work.
That makes me so happy to hear! We enjoy making them!
You handled that way better than l would have, l love birds as well so l understand your joy at seeing so many different ones and a Kiwi 👍
Wish the kiwi spotting had been a bit more grand, but I’ll take it!
What a great place to put on the todo list. Love the stick phase, lots of adventures. 😃
So much fun! Bring extra food!!
That food business would have made me angry lol and yeah, white rice is just wrong ... but that's the warning for all of us now after watching this.
Looks like an amazing place, the bird song was full on aye 😃 you don't hear that normally here in Canterbury. And thanks for putting the bird names up!
Your little boy is just gorgeous. Take care you three xx
Thanks for watching! I’m happy we put the names in, wasn’t planning to primarily but definitely helps!
Your baby is such a gorgeous, happy wee lad .
He is so much fun! Thank you!
Have you run into warning signs to "Beware low flying Kereru" in your travels?
In berry season the Wood Pigeons eat berries that have fermented on the ground ... they get totally drunk and cannot fly well.
Yup, seen 'em drunk and can confirm. By far my favourite bird.
They are so big! And the sound their wings make while flying is so startling!
We loved Tirtiri! We got stranded there too! Had a pregnant wife and 3 kids :). Our food supplies were very low as well. Quite the adventure.
No way! Sounds way more stressful than our situation! Why did y’all get stranded?
@@Becca.Loveless The seas were too rough and the ferry couldn't land. They sent a "rescue boat" the next day to come get us. It was just us and some volunteers on a large ferry boat. It was a little stressful because we didn't quite have enough food, but we loved it because we got 2 nights for the price of 1 and it gave us another night to go out and see the nocturnal animals :)
@@AlwaysAnAdventureWithKids ya that’s basically what happened with us. Probably happens quite often.
Lucky you took some bananas 🍌
what an adventure! Just an unfortunate series of events screwed with your plans. But still. It was an adventure. 😊
Yep. We had a fun time, there also isn’t much else to do on that island.
There are some plants I saw in the video that eatible...you can also dive in the ocean for kina 😋...
We totally would have been okay for ages. And if I didn’t have my two year old with me it would have been nothing but fun 😊
I dunno if you've been yet, but Zealandia in Wellington is a good one for birds, my dad nearly got hit in the head a few times by low flying Kereru, and believe me, they were flying pretty damn low to nearly hit him in the head!
Kinda jealous of your stranding I have to admit, I was just battling the wind driving to and from work everyday haha, not nearly as exciting!
We haven’t even been to Wellington yet maybe within the next few months.
@@Becca.Loveless I love welly, but that's where I grew up so I'm biased. The wind down there can get cold if it'd a southerly so be warned!
Yeah I hope you coped. NZ is two long thin islands in the middle of the roaring 40s. Do the scout thing and be prepared
🤣we were so prepped on clothing and things. But should have had more food. Didn’t expect getting stuck there. But a good lesson for next time
There is always kai moana, shellfish gathering or roast wood pigeon stuffed with miro berries and pikopiko (bush asparagus)
If we got super desperate! Probably would have been better than our weevil rice.
@@Becca.Loveless what you and your family experienced was unfortunate and very rare however, there should have been enough edible provisions there to last at least one night. I would write a letter to City Council highlighting the need for someone to check provision are well stocked. The main thing is you are all safe and well.
@@johntepu1869 Probably, there was enough food for us, but if all of the other 8 people didnt have enough food it would have been a problem.
Amazing ... more birds than Mt Maunganui in summer.😁
It was pretty incredible! So many birds I hadn’t seen yet.
Haha I see what you did there ...
I think they need to keep a larger emergency food supply there, a cupboard full of canned food would be an idea. You can start to see why, in extreme situations, how some people are driven to urine drinking, and cannibalism to stay alive, ha ha! Also, another near miss 2:12, thought he was going to whack the back of his head on the deck.
Sure is a rugged place, but plenty of wild life. Glad you all made it back in one piece :)
I fully support the idea that they should have a bigger emergency box! I mean, I guess we could survive off of plants and seafood and birds and such if things got desperate enough.
He’s been in a jumping phase recently - always finding the highest things to jump off of. It may be folly, but I tend to trust his judgement.
@@Becca.Loveless Haha, yeah, bit of a problem on a wildlife sanctuary though, you wouldn't be allowed to eat any of it.
And, Mother knows best, kids can't always be wrapped in cotton wool, sometimes learning the hard way works :)
My son just turned 6, and is still in a “stick” phase. But really it’s more like a “branch phase.” We have to constantly remind him “big sticks require big space.”
Yep. I have almost been hit several times. In sure he will like them for a long time!
Now you're going to have to learn about edible wild plants in NZ
I was laughing the whole time that we were stranded on the island with good service the whole time 😂 a few extra days and I totally would have been googling edible plants!
bucket hat - check
rugby shorts - fail
random beer on t-shirt - fail
Bonus round, singlet with 1 sauce stain - failed
33% kiwi bloke achieved, dad joke not detected please load up the dad joke to invoke kiwi dad mode, jandles with sock tan lines needed.
😂😂 I’ll tell him to work on it. Although he does do jandals and socks regularly. It’s also a Utah thing.
Hi from Florida.
Florida! Such a beautiful place!
I love fantails. They always come to say hello.🐧
Don’t tell any of the other birds but fantails are totally my favorite!
Nice video
Thanks as always!! 😊
@@Becca.Loveless you’re welcome
"I only packed one pair of pants" 😂
Another amazing video!
Billy and the kid are the best bits of the videos - no idea why I even bother popping on 😂
Own up Becca. You went carnivore and ate some of those delicious birds, didn't you?
Lol everyone was making jokes about how notoriously bad pukeko are to eat 😂
I think Lorde filmed Solar Power on Tiritiri Matangi??
Watched it last night to confirm and now I’ve been singing it all last night/this morning 😂
@@Becca.Loveless Actually it's one of a number of places people thought it was. The other is Cactus Bay on Waiheke Island. I'm not sure but I love how you're leaving no stone unturned in your pursuit of adventure
@@hellovanite Ugh we need to get over to Waiheke!
Why did that feel like Texas ?🤔
Haha I knew nobody would get that. There was some stringy moss growing from the trees and it reminded me of Texas Spanish moss.
@@Becca.Loveless this one was a great video.
15:28 You're a kiwi now lolololol
🤣🤣
The gym is the perfect place to make your muscles stronger ----> and your hearing permanently weaker.
Perfect!
I would love to be stranded on a desert island.
I would if I didn’t have my baby with me and we had plenty of food!
@@Becca.Lovelessyou should’ve taken them to court for endangering your child, coming from someone who can whakapapa to the first navigator to find Aotearoa, Kupe, and his great great grand son Nukutawhiti who settled Te Hokianga-nui-a-Kupe in mid september 1054ce (date estimated by Rereata Makiha, maramataka practitioner)
Wtf they made you starve! That is what’s wrong with that island theres not a place for tāngata whenua, hospitality is very important to Māori and there’s no doubt in my mind that if Māori had presence there you would have at the very least been instructed where and how to get food and how to prepare it for example those crabs yous saw
That would have been fun! And I think if we had truly been starving things would have been different.
@@Becca.Loveless yeah lol they wouldn’t have missed the slowest kiwi
Glad you made it back ok.
Random food question. Have you ever ground garbanzo beans into flour and made bread with them?
No I haven’t! Have you? And is it any good?
