Kristofferson originally wrote this song about Johnny Cash's struggles with addiction for a sobriety party in the 1970s. He explained to Billboard magazine: "Everyone was supposed to say something inspirational, so I wrote a song. I tried to record this once before with Willie Nelson and my band. When I sang the chorus, they echoed me when I would sing 'Good morning John.' When I got to the line that said 'I love you John,' Willie said 'He loves you John' and we all cracked up laughing. We never finished it, so I finished it myself."

He wrote it not just about John, but FOR John, when he came out of the hospital one day. He told some funny story about when he first tried to record it with Willie Nelson and couldn't get him to sing "I love you, John, but Willie sang "He loves you, John" instead and everybody couldn't stop laughing and they weren't able to record it...
How absolutely fabulous! I thought I had heard and known everything Kris! But somehow I missed this video And this song until now. And to have Johnny sitting on stage receiving the adulation! Thank you poster! Those glory days are gone but NEVER will be forgotten.

I saw Kris perform when he was 82. He was amazing, even at that age. He was on stage 90 minutes and looked as if he was enjoying himself. A true Legend.

Where the hell do you find this great stuff!? Two of my heroes. I'm constantly amazed at Kris's catalogue. I heard this on "closer to the bone" ( or was it "this old road"?) and then I find out it was recorded many years (and times) before! This man obviously writes ALL THE TIME!

Kris, according to John Carter Cash, Johnny Cash was never completely stayed off of drugs. It’s known to be incredibly hard to wean off, and as nearly everyone experiences as they grow older, the pains of aches and pains of arthritis, neuropathy. from surgeries and diseases such as Diabetes are real for many, many people. It don’t blame Johnny Cash . I do sure hope he wasn’t driving in his later years.

Thank you for the info. I saw an interview with Kris and he referenced this song. He said June had asked him to write a song for John to acknowledge his coming out of rehab. He said he wasn't completely comfortable with doing it but that he would do whatever she asked him to do. Thank goodness he did. What a wonderful song from one grateful friend to another. Johnny doesn't seem completely comfortable with it either but given the circumstance, I am sure they both were eventually glad for the memory and opportunity. What golden, precious memories for ALL of us!
