    Great video, the hardest part about the lute seems to be figuring out where on earth to even buy the strings from!
    Perhaps you will see this and help. I have a 10 course lute but cannot for the life of me fiure out where to purchase strings from.

      Hi, Justin! You can buy nylgut and synthetic loaded gut from aquilausa.com. They are excellent! For gut, I prefer www.kuerschner-saiten.de. If you'd like to talk more, please feel free to message me on instagram @keenemusik

    My chanterelle broke today, used this video to put on my spare, it snapped again during tuning. Do you have any ideas of what could be wrong? Or advice for what to do? Thanks for the helpful video.

      Thanks for reaching out! Is the string snapping at the nut by any chance? If so, there may be a super small sharp edge. You can take #0000 steel wool and run over the slot in the nut - that should do it! It could also be the wrong string gauge or poor quality strings. Feel free to message me on instagram @keenemusik. I’d be happy to discuss.

      @@DanielKeeneMusic I think the string snapped at the bridge, but im not sure, im also using nylgut strings that came with the lute from muzikkon. Ill go see if there is some sharp edge somewhere and try to put on my last spare chanterelle 😂 also i dont have instagram but thank you for replying here

      @@internaut4257 At the bridge; yup then there may be a very fine sharp edge THERE! Go over it with #0000 steel wool and sand w the grain. It’s super fine so you won’t damage your instrument; hopefully just take out any nicks that may be there. Nylgut breaks very easily IF there are even any small imperfections.

    Thank you for the guide. I got my first lute today, and it won't tune due to slippage. Is it necessary to change strings to apply paste, or can I loosen the peg enough to pull it out some?

    • @DanielKeeneMusic
      @DanielKeeneMusic  3 года назад

      To apply the peg dope (paste) to both ends of the peg, as shown in the video, you will need to loosen and remove the old string from the peg at the peg box completely (but not from the bridge of course). You can manage to get peg dope on the one end of the peg by simply loosening the string a little and pulling the peg out just a bit, but it's best to apply the peg dope to both ends of the peg. I hope this helps! Please feel free to ask any other questions that you may have.

    Hello what strings do you use ?

    • @DanielKeeneMusic
      @DanielKeeneMusic  6 месяцев назад

      Usually gut trebles by Aquila or Kurschner, etc… or even harp strings by Bow Brand…. If you don’t want gut, a good go-to is nylgut trebles (synthetic gut) by Aquila. For the basses I normally use a carbon fiber by Savarez or synthetic loaded gut (reds) by Aquila. I’m always experimenting - it depends on the instrument I’m using as well as the scenario I’m in.

    I got my first lute yesterday, but it's so difficult to move pegs, even though I applied paste for pegs. Furthermore, when i try to tune pegs come back (turn in the opposite direction), and i dont know why. Could u please give me some advices?

    No nail for playing lute? Is that common? Classical broke me heart because I can’t grow nail, can I finally be free to express myself without judgement by playing the lute without nails?

    • @DanielKeeneMusic
      @DanielKeeneMusic  Год назад

      Hi, @joseph2832. Yes, it is common to play lute without nails though some choose to play with nails. Historically on guitar, they played without and with nails. Play how you wish and experiment! 😃Happy to discuss this more; feel free to message me on instagram @keenemusik.

      I think the typical thumb in Renaissance technique is much more comfortable without nails.

      But dear Joseph, today poor nails are not a show stopper for guitar. A nail studio will fix this one. I refused to use one, but now with age my nails are more fragile, and I go there every six weeks - have never had better tune! A suggestion: extension + gel for you. Lutes are for die hards. I respect them dearly, have had many friends, but I'm glad the luthier who took my order for a renaissance never delivered - imagine some 20 strings to tune w/o mechanics 😧

    what about the different types of lute string?

    • @DanielKeeneMusic
      @DanielKeeneMusic  2 года назад

      Hi, Tim! This method of tying strings can be used for any material: gut, nylgut, nylon, wire, metal, synthetic loaded gut, etc...

      @@DanielKeeneMusic what about the sting gauge?

    • @DanielKeeneMusic
      @DanielKeeneMusic  2 года назад

      @@1dimtim …string guages and tension would have to be another tutorial all together. Nothing was or is standard. Your string gauge will depend on your lute’s string length, desired frequency, string material, desired tension, etc… You never want to go too heavy or you may choke the life out of the instrument. A good starting point would be to use a string calculator (here is Niskanen’s) and adjust by sound and feel from there: www.niskanenlutes.com/index.php?p=stringcalc#V1_NRenaissance+Lute_A440_L-0-Fingerboard-60_S0Y0NguT3.8_S1Y0NduT3.2M3.2Pdu_S2Y0NaT3M3Pa_S3Y0NfT2.9M2.9Pf_S4Y0NcT2.9M2.9Pc_S5Y0NGT2.8M2.5Pg_S6Y0NFT2.8M2.5Pf_S7Y0NET2.8M2.5Pe_S8Y0NDT2.8M2.5Pd_S9Y0NCT2.8M2.5Pc_E
