Followed your advice.. started working months ago off the Folger library manuscript BV980, and the results have been..strange. Lot of notes I would not expect and I’m not sure where o went wrong.. or if I did. I have no context
Improvising in standard tuning in C,G,D,A,E gets a little boring. Lute tuning opens up so many possibilities in F,Bb,Eb,Ab which keeps things fresh. For some reason the open string minor D,F#,B sounds so much more melancholic and longing than an equivalent open Emin.
Now I’m curious, Brandon. Are there guitars that you own that you use specifically for lute music? Or do you not have any guitars that are specifically set up for that?
No I have several lutes. I play the historical instruments rather than arranging. But for those who won't get a lute, you can play lots of wonderful lute music on guitar via this trick ;)
The idea would be to play lute music that was written in this tuning from lute tablature. You can learn more about it here: ruclips.net/video/tzBBs5WprTI/видео.htmlsi=f3gtp7dNu6_RZedh
Every chord could be played almost entirely the same as standard, just with the note on the G string fretted one fret higher. For example, E major could be played 022200, A major x02320, D major xx0332.
@@brandonacker The Renaissance was in A=440? Should I be tuning up my viol for consort music? Looking into this, gamut strings says that A=466 in the Renaissance.. interesting…
@PrinceFrogFrog there were many pitches used and it depends where and when you were. The pitch in Italy and France at the same moment could be as different as a whole step or minor third. Yes, one renaissance pitch used was 466/465 but again it depends where and when exactly. I know it is complicated haha
So, to summarize, just tune your guitar to E,A,D,F#,B,E and put capo somewhere where it sounds good and if someone asks "it's a historical thing". If they don't stop asking about the historical accuracy of your tuning and pitch, you can probably still use the joker in the sleeve and throw in that you also need to tune the guitar with the capo because the frets aren't perfect so you need to fiddle around pulling the string in front and behind the capo to get them right and by now everyone has hopefully forgotten the historical accuracy of your tuning? 😄
