At the time it came out I was amongst the people who were disappointed about this compared to the webseries. I've revisited it a few times in the last couple years and it's not nearly as bad as I thought it was back then. It's definitely not as magical as the webseries was, and Jarett has mentioned this in interviews. They had network television execs, outside writers and a lot of other things beyond their control working against them, and still managed to put out a pretty good product in the end.
I'm just surprised that they started off as internet celebrities and helped to pioneer this concept when it was literally still in the dark ages. And then they sold out to TV Networks to be aired locally so they could be bossed around by these execs/writers on TV while the rest of the world moved onto RUclips shows, Twitch, Netflix etc The internet celebrity and independent creators began thriving more than ever before while PurePwnage moved onto TV and failed. Talk about thinking backwards. They could've been as powerful as Pewdiepie today. They had that potential.
Yeah i still think the TV show version was a big mistake, it will never make sense why so many people think that throwing money at something based in creativity will automatically make it better
I was similar but it didn't take me as long to come around. I think at least half of the TV episodes were pretty good (Pilot, Girls, Job and Rock Band Hero episodes), the rest were meh. I think we can all agree it's great the TV show didn't replicate the whole 'micro balls' stuff at least. But yeah little sad we missed out on Dawei and it feels like he and T-Bag got cheap substitutes (Simon and Tyrell). However I think October is much better than Anastasia, who was actually pretty boring and had no funny lines. But anyone who knows anything knew there was zero way a Canadian TV show version of Pure Pwnage could replicate the web series. The web series is highly catered to gamers (which was what made it unique) but it only worked because gamers are only a large demographic when you are broadcasting to the entire WORLD like the internet does. This was basically just paid for and broadcast in Canada, Canada is not big enough that its gamer population could sustain the show alone (nor is any country's individually, any Western country at least), so it had to be changed to bring non-gamers in, but its cancellation would suggest they didn't succeed. So we're just left with one season of watered down Pwnage. The sad thing is now we live in the world of streamers who commission shows and broadcast to the entire world at once, it's exactly the situation a high production quality series of Pure Pwnage might work if gamers from across the world got behind it and watched it (legally), but we're too late now... the world has moved on, the guys are old and no one knows who they are any more, at least back in the day non-fans still knew Doug as the "Boom! Headshot!" guy if nothing else.
The show wouldn't work anymore cause Jeremy could actually make a good living playing games from his home. The whole "growing up" point the show was trying to make would fail today.

I just think it's ironic, that they were revolutionary back in the day and helped to create the internet celebrity, and then they decided to go backwards to get on the TV box so they could be aired locally, have producers and bosses telling them what to do and calling the shots instead of being their own boss/creator, then having their own show cancelled.

To be clear the TV version was awesome, and it's a real damn shame PP didn't take off and become what it could have been moving forward. The three main characters are still just as awesome. The issue is all the add-on characters. Its like genuine PP inserted into a normal stereotypical TV show.
You can literally see where the artistic vision and the Producer input intersect. It's half beautiful and half corporate which is a much better ratio for 2010 than in 2023. I lament the past

Whenever you watch early RUclips you realize how juvenile a lot of that humor was compared to mainstream television then or now. Despite being a TV show it still has that sort of same sophomoric feel. I think that's part of the reason why it didn't get renewed past its pilot. A lot of the writing is actually pretty cheesy when put on the same playing field as other syndicated shows.
there was an aspect that made it successful for an internet web series but kinda fails when adapting to essentially network television and instead of actually putting the effort in adapting it properly for i guess the "average mainstream audience" who has no idea what a micro battle is they attempted to just copy and paste which ultimately failed in the end the old series wasn't cringe, a lot of the jokes and subtle humor that surrounds the main narrative and characters... were actually really fken hilarious even all the way to the T-Bag halo saga even characters like dave had their build up introduction that felt natural... such a shame, this and their film in 2016 was their last straw and we prob will never hear from them again unless it's asking everyone for $50000000 for another film
