    This is very helpful. Recently I’ve become more interested in growing my art book / photo book collection. The art library at my college did something really cool recently. They needed to buy updated versions of their books and left a ton of books for students to take for free. I carried about 12 photo books, art books and textbooks home that day. Definitely going to check out some of your resources to grow my collection! Thanks!!

    You mentioned libraries and I might also add that most library systems have "Friends" groups, non-profit local groups that help support their local libraries, and as a member of one of these in my home town, we have a couple of annual book sales to raise funds. We acquire leftover books from other library sales and donations from people in general and we always get photography books and we sell them cheaply. A great source for books of all kinds.

    Nick quick suggestion! - you should do a weekly or fortnightly segment where you upload a video "reviewing" a book just generally talking about why you bought it, what you've learnt from it and how it's inspired your work, etc. Reckon it would be nice to see what you take away from books!

      3 Ansel Adams on Yosemite and National Parks, Elliot Erwitt Photographs 1946-1988, Isak Dinesen's Africa, Carr Clifton: California. I take mostly landscapes but I have an appreciation for a lot of street photographers and find the way they compose shots and use light very inspiring for both landscapes and to shoot street photography

    This is great information, I've noted down AbeBooks' and ThriftBooks' web addresses. There is an independent bookstore in my town that has a large used and remaindered section. I've used them a lot. My impression is that many if not most hard cover art and photography books get remaindered eventually ("remainders" are new books that didn't sell and are heavily discounted, usually 50-80%). I wouldn't be surprised if publishers can predict pretty accurately how many books they will ultimately have to remainder when they plan print runs. I used to think of remainders as mostly books that failed, and maybe that is true of novels, cookbooks, weight-loss and exercise books, last year's travel guides, etc., but a good photography book doesn't typically become less interesting as years pass. So a smart publisher might figure on healthy and predictable profits based on X number of books sold this year at $75 each and Y number of books each of the subsequent five years at $25 a pop.
    You showed a Taschen book. Taschen sells very nicely printed art and photo books at low prices. I think they underwrite their business with a lot of borderline porn which is smart if you think about it: photography monographs and fetish books both need crisp printing and glossy paper. Barnes and Noble aren't just a bookseller anymore, they publish nice books at very nice prices under their own imprint. I've seen art books from them so I assume they have put out some photography books too. Dover Books are cheap when new and some used bookstores follow a policy of discounting the cover price by 50% or something unless the book is rare. I have a large size paperback of Man Ray photos that went for $6.00 when new.

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  6 лет назад

      Thats a good point, I could see publishing houses taking that into consideration. Make their money back on the initial sales, and then make profits on the backend at reasonable prices in the remaindered sections. And Taschen does make incredible books. None that I have are anywhere near porn, but I dont doubt there are some that are. I think its more due to "fine art" leaning towards that direction, more so then their marketing ploy. But either way Im sure it doesnt hurt their sales. lol.
      A large paperback of Man Ray, is a great price! Thats a good steal!
      Thanks for sharing buddy! I really appreciate the well thought out response!

    Great video. I would love to create a photo book for selling but I’m not sure about how to manage the legal aspect of it as I am primarily a street photographer... any hints?

    • @miracleyacht__1538
      @miracleyacht__1538 4 года назад

      Really depends on your country. Here in Germany one can publish street scenery with peoples faces as long as your not specifically photographing them. When it comes to random portraits the situation is very critical nowadays. I wish people wouldn’t be so annoying. Especially in my country, if you point a camera at someone they will probably try to sue you.

    I go to Oxfam. Charity shops often take house clearances, at least in the UK and in Germany. I don't know about the states! I did a video on this in 2016, but no one saw it. You may want to do a second video and add this source too. Alex.,

    • @batworker
      @batworker 6 лет назад +2

      Alex Jackson-Smith Don’t know if you’ve noticed, but so many of the charity shops these days seem to have an increasingly sure grip on what books are worth? The days of the 99p bargin seem long gone 😂

    • @AlexJacksonSmith
      @AlexJacksonSmith 6 лет назад +1

      Andy Smart - I agree your point. I live in Germany and here they do check and adjust the prices. I never experienced the 99p bargain...! :(
      I have only just (in the last year, since late 2016) bothered. I am interested in what I can't see/find in the internet... Mostly photo-journalist and what I would call strange style art photography. This is what I consider expands my perspective over those styles that everyone else can see. Therefore my second point below...
      I wasn't suggesting you can buy and resell for a profit. I see second hand is still cheaper and the other benefit is that the books in Oxfam and other similar places
      -> *are selling what is often out of print*.
      So I raised it as complementary to Nick's recommendations for cheaper new books. Alex.,

    • @NickExposed
      @NickExposed  6 лет назад +1

      I have found that local thrift stores/charity shops here in Michigan still have a steal of deals. Many books hidden at the 99 cent point yet. But I would say they are getting quite savvy on their camera listings. Seen a k1000 at an $75 price point the other day. Im sure its only a matter of time before book pricings get caught up. However as you said, if your purchasing for study, and not for resale there is still value to be had in many cases. Thanks for sharing, Ill check your video out :)

    • @AlexJacksonSmith
      @AlexJacksonSmith 6 лет назад +1

      Nick - "purchasing for study, and not for resale" it never crossed my mind that people would buy to resell. But each to their own! I only added my comment to let people know that "out of publication" is often more informationally valuable as the internet did not exist when many were printed. Over time these older out of publication books MAY also have resale value, but as I said that's not my motivation. BTW Like your content, just need to "work" my way through it... A.,

    • @NickExposed
