- HI FRIENDS! Welcome to a special video! We check out a bit of NIGHTWISH over here but this will be our FIRST with the original vocalist Tarja Turunen! Today we dive into "The Siren" off of the End of An Era DVD. I truly hope you enjoy. :)

Tarja is the definition of "The Voice"
She was literally a host on the Senior Voice Finland. You nailed it. Well as a native Finnish speaker you'd roll the R in Taraja but you got it. Tarja (ta RR ee aa soile Susanna Two RU men).
Recorded October 21, 2005.
Her last night with the band.
Their choice on timing not hers.
Long story best skipped.
This was the ONCE upon a tour. For their 5th album ONCE. (2004), last date of the tour at the then named Hartwell arena in the Finnish capital Helsinki. War ecidently dropped the sponsorship for the arena since. Crowd size 11, 500.

Jakku original drummer. Retired from performing. Now band manager. Due to health reasons.
Tarja went solo in 2007.
She is on break from touring Europe before heading out for a spring tour of North America. She is finishing her 2018 In The Raw tour. Already finished her series of Eastern Europe Christmas concerts.
Been releasing singles from her electronic music album/project Outlanders. Been working on that since 2014.
A couple more singles before the album drops. She released her Best Of:Living the dream double album at the start of December 2022. Along with another amazing live performance filmed in the Czech Repulic at the start of 2020. It is called Circus Life. Played live with an orchestra, back up trio of singers, her band. All on the ground floor ringed by lights. 360° view the way everyone is spaced. Even her brother Toni joins for some of the vocals.
Nightwish formed in 1996. Was going to be folk rock until Tuomas and Emppu heard their high school friend (Kitee is a very small village on the Eastern border of Finland. In fact Tumoas' mother was Tarja's piano teacher) they decided they would become a metal band. Inspired in part by love of fantasy and their Christian faith. Went on to help create if not outright create the genre of Symphonic Metal.
Tarja has classical training in German Lied music. Aka Chamber music. She has covered opera pieces and even wrote an album of Ave Marias. One of which she sang with Marko on stage at a nationally televised Christmas concert they were both performing at. 2012 iiirc. 1st time on stage since she was fired publiclly by the band via a publishes copy of a sealed letter leaked overnight after this show that she was told to wait until tomorrow to open. Reports were of mutual tears and much hugging backstage. Much holding like brother and sister onstage too during the singing of Ave Maria. Point there as well, Marko is also classicall trained. Lead a band called Tarot b4 joining NW in fact.
There is also footage of a festival in The Netherlands where he was an invited guest with her band on stage.
Their friendship is restored. Which is a good thing for how amazing those two are in stage together. It was only 4 years that they were but people still talk about it 20 years later.
Now if you didn't know Tarja and Floor are friends going back to when She & her former band opened for NW (02?), and remaim close to this day. After NW knew Anette would need time off to have her kid, they were looking for someone to finish the tour in 6 months. Turned out to be 3 months. Kids have zero respect for schedules.😅
Anyways, they asked their friend Floor. Floor out of loyalty went to her friend Tarja for her blessings. Not wanting to put strain on a frienship. Tarja gave her blessing and in 2010 Floor did join. On 48 hr notice to the new timetable. 2012 they made her a partner in Nightwish. And as of 2023 with a kid of her own, and a cancer scare, she has released a singles album called Paragon while NW is taking a break.
Which brings us to the current day.
Now recomendations
NW with Tarja video is between 1998 if you want baby wish live on a TV program.
Better from December 29, 2000. In Tampere Finland From Wishes to Eternity has bangers. Tarja still had her thicker accent ( sorry Kitee is rural even for Finland) and the heavier classical technique.
There are a couple festivals i n HD upload from 2002 and 2005. Besides End of an Era. The name given after Tarja left and the DVD released the summer of 2006.

Everdream. Tarja and Marko both sing on that.
Wishmaster a real banger. Looking up the lyrics( real lyrics) advised. Tuomas writing about characters from the source material. But its a rocker. Headbanging included.
Sleeping Sun a live version of the 2004 remake that has its own 2nd video. The original was done in 99 and Tarja was not sastified with how it was recorded. Slightly slower tempo. Elegant gown. Melancholy mood. Tarja an enchanting Angel of Death imo. See the 2nd video.
Ghost Love Score an 11 minute epic. I specify that. Don't be fooled by the pause at 7 mins.
And a toss up between I wish I had an Angel from Century Child
Or Bless the Child and my choice by a whisker.

Yellow gown, this number, a black dress w yellow trim, Sleeping Sun silver gown, red dress/coat from the video for Nemo ( you can add it) and a white flowing outfit at the end of the night. I mentioned it was always meant for a DVD.

She ages like a fine wine. She has looked after her voice and not lost a thing. Opposite in fact. Training never stops.
Tarja and Floor are both great in their own ways. Tarja's voice is dark and melancholy, she excels in songs like this. Can you imagine she was sick that day so this is not even her at her best.

This is one of the songs I think belongs to Tarja. Floor does a good job, but this is where it's at. Another one is _Nemo_ - I recommend that and _Phantom_ _of_ _the_ _Opera_ (official live End of an Era) for more Tarja!

The way she switches from that smooth butter-y voice to full operatic to arabic chanting 🌷🤲🏽❣some people say she can only do operatic but it's not true. I love her!!!!

The Siren is one of the best songs to hear Tarja for the first time. It's one of my favourite performances from her. 🤘
The final show with Tarja. Nailed it! This one is based on the epic story of Ulysses (Odysseus) and his encounter with the Sirens on his travels home from the Trojan War. Another little taste of metal musical theater in this one.
Tarja of course is doing the part of the Sirens. Marko is Ulysses.
One of my favorites from Tarja. It is a perfect song for her operatic style of singing.
Pronunciation of Tarja was pretty good, 'J' is pronounced like an English 'Y', then roll the 'R'. She is the most operatic of the 3 lead singers. No, don't try that, Tarja had lots of training, you didn't. lol Tarja's vocal abilities are why Tuomas changed his original vision, from acoustic mood music, to symphonic metal.
This concert was Oct 21, 2005 in Helsinki, the last show of the tour, and Tarja's last Nightwish show. After the concert ,the guys gave her the open letter dismissing her from the band after 9 years and 5 albums. She has gone on to a long and successful solo career.
This was song #6 in an 18 song set, and one of my favorites. Love Tuomas' keyboard solo. The song just before this was their cover of Phantom of the Opera, Tarja was awesome on that, and Marko kills it. Also from this show, Planet Hell, Sleeping Sun, Wishmaster, Nemo, or the show closer Wish I Had an Angel. AND with Marko on lead vocal, their cover/tribute of Pink Floyd's High Hopes.

I am very happy that you reacted to Tarja. she is my teen and one of my favorite singers right now, she has a huge solo career. with Nightwish I recommend slaying the dreamer, dark chest of wonders, planet hell (I better recommend all the songs from this show hahaha) and her solo career there is a lot to explore, many styles: symphonic metal, rock, rock ballads , arias, Christmas songs, dark Christmas songs, house/electronic music, covers in general, just tell me what you want to hear and I recommend something 😉 she is not afraid to explore her full potential, she doesn't do just one thing.
The Phantom of the Opera is already mentioned, so I would like to add Pharaon sails to Orion if you like haunting, magical atmosphere. (It's not from The End of An Era but still... the official video by NW). Not to mention Tarja's solo career, as a performer she is even more interesting when she is on her own.
I agree. I loved her in Nightwish, but now I love her even more.
You could choose anything from the five album she did with NW, Tarja is amazing✨❤️🤘🏻or from End of an Era, Summerbreze 2002, Raumanmeren 2003, Whishes to Eternity tour. But try to find live versions because she and NW are best live.

This whole concert is so awesome done by the best line-up they have had. Also the one which made them great and leader of this genre globally. Tuomas really made a story of the Greek mythology here....haunting sound as you say. Do "From Wishes to Eternity" DVD too.

People often think "The Siren" must be Tarja's lead vocals. But it's not. It's Marco's lead vocals.
But both are absolutely wonderful vocalists, and great music. So... let's goooo!

From this concert you can check out many great performances. I'd suggest "Creek marys blood", "Planet Hell" ,"Wishmaster", "Slaying the dreamer", and "Sleeping sun". You cant go wrong with any of those and youll get a good sample of Tarja

I recommend Within Temptation "Mother Earth" on this recommendation. Someone who only now 2 decades later is getting the credit she deserves for the genre she helped create. Sharen del Adel and Amy Lee of Evanescence recently performed together as well which makes this story all the more epic here. Tarja The Siren is a great place to start here though. The golden era of Nightwish with beast Marko and angel Tarja. I love that combination. Tarja has recorded five studio albums with Nightwish (Anette two albums and Floor also two, and a third is on the way). These albums are still among the most popular.
There are a lot of great songs from the first era like Phantom of the Opera (official live), Beauty and the Beast, The Pharaoh sails to Orion, Slaying the dreamer, Wishmaster, Wish I had an angel, End of all hope, Kinslayer. This one is about the Columbian Massacre.
There are also many songs that were originally sung by Tarja like Ghost Love Score, Ever dream, Dark chest of wonders, Planet Hell. These are all on the End of Era DVD as well.
Tarja and her heels. What she wears later is even more breakneck, especially when combined with what she performs on stage.
The pronunciation of her name is one of the best I've heard from reactors.

When going back to the older stuff, always remember you get the band, and sometimes the younger guys have more energy, like Marko in Planet Hell and Slaying the Dreamer from this same concert.
Edit: But before those Phantom of the Opera from this concert, has to be done, and High Hopes the Pink Floyd tribute.
End of an Era was their prime. You can hear the arrangements, so much more richer and the sound was very different. Tarja's vocals weren't just vocals--they used her voice as an instrument.
I will tell you this. Is Floor great? Hell yeah, she's fucking great and I love that they managed to sign her eventually after Tarja left. However.... 90% of their biggest songs are written for Tarjas operatic voice, with her in mind and for me I just cant let Tarja go. However good Floor is, to me their songs just sound better with Tarja. As simple as that.

You did a great job on the pronunciation. It is rather difficult for many of us Americans to say correctly, as we tend to want to say the "j" like we normally would in English. That's odd because we don't have any trouble saying, for example, "Sonja" correctly. I think it is just hard for our Anglophone tongues to put the "y" sound immediately after an r. Europeans roll the r, which makes it easier to transition to the y, but we have trouble rolling r's too! I finally gave up and just say it with my comfortable American j and hope she won't get too mad at me! LOL! If other fans wanna get mad at me for that, they'll just have to get over it.
You don't need to worry about the last name, as she is one of the very few celebrities who is known worldwide by only their first name. Tarja, Floor, Madonna, Cher, Oprah, Elvis..... it's a very short list! 😆 But her last name is way easier than Tarja. To use phonetic spelling that makes sense to American English, it is simply TURE-rune-nen.

Tarja is Tarja and she is unique and beautiful a soul as you will ever meet.
You can't really say Europeans roll their r as there are so many different languages in Europe - it's a big place! I'm English and we don't roll our r sounds - we can say Tarja just fine as long as people remember that the 'j' is like a 'y' sound.
I know that Brits do not roll their r's. Americans speak English too... remember? I said it is difficult for Americans to pronounce correctly. I made no claims about U.K. We often use the word "Europe" more loosely, as I did, applying it to continental Europe only while tending to think of U.K. as more like our own brothers and sisters than the rest of Europe. So forgive my less than technically accurate application of the term. But the pronunciation for most Americans is, in fact, difficult and comes out of our Anglophone tongues sounding a bit awkward. We know the j sounds like our English y, but that doesn't help the tongue! For example, we have no trouble correctly pronouncing "Sonja" because it is easy to tongue the "y" sound after an "n." But it is very clumsy for most of us to tongue the "y" sound immediately following an "r" unless one rolls it in the proper way. And that is very difficult for many of us to do because we never had to do it here in the States (also a very big place!). Unless one learns that tongue gymnastic right from childhood, it is very difficult to learn later in life. @@AllieB-11.11

On the album and recorded for the concert are London UK's Philharmonic symphony orchestra. London's Metro Choir Voices.
Tarja was suffering with the flu and could not sing at the sound check. Obviously doctor gave her a steroid shot to allow her to sing with a head cold.
This also was ( known to the band, unknown to her until the next day) her last night with Nightwish from the founding in 1996. It was her, Tuomas keyboard, composer, and Emppu on guitar back then. Jukka the drummer and Sami on base hired later.
Sami left in 2001. Marko replaced him and became the male lead singer until 2021.
Jukka retired from playing for health reasons in 2014. Day manager to this day.
Emppu & Tuomas still play to this day.
Tarja went solo in 2007. Full name is Tarja Soile Susanna Turunen (2 RU nen) Cabuli.

Since you didn't butchered Tarja (you pronounce Tarja's name very well - Tarja herself almost trolls when she rolls the letter R in her name), and since every cat people deserves to hear Tarja, you should watch and listen how Tarja and Marko elegantly Slaying The Dreamer.
She sings like she is trying to catch up to the musicians. Should have stuck with opera only. Floor is another level, no comparison. not my opinion, I just have ears.
But it is an opinion though. We all have ears too and Tarja does great here. The band started off with her so she's obviously meant to sound that way. Or are you saying Tuomas took on a duff lead singer - wouldn't that be a reflection on him then? There are quite a few Nightwish songs where Tarja sounds way better than Floor - this is one of them.
Tarja is nightwish. With out it, it would never be.
