Cold Steel Trailmaster VG1 San Mai III Large Fixed Blade : CS16JSM: 16JSM Trail Master San Mai III Cold Steel Why buy a Trail Master®? That's simple. Because it is, without a doubt, the most knife for the money ever commercially built! In terms of sharpness, edge holding and strength, it will out perform "by a wide margin" any factory made knife we know of and 99% of all hand forged knives as well! We know we're "going out on a limb" with that statement, but since 1987 we have challenged the industry to make a better knife and yet, to this day, we've had no takers. So before you spend your hard earned bucks on one of our competitor's knives, take a moment to review all the advantages offered by the Cold Steel® Trail Master. Style and Construction: The broad clip point of the blade is extremely resistant to bending or breaking. This is largely due to the fact that the tip is actually thicker near the point than what is seen on our competitor's knives. This, however, does not mean that the point is dull or blunt. On the contrary, the point is almost needle sharp and offers tremendous penetration. Plus, the blade-back is equipped with a slightly concave false edge that measures approximately three and a half inches long. Every Trail Master's® edge has been honed by hand, then given a high speed buff until it is truly razor sharp and capable of easily shaving the hair off one's arm. This knife is so sharp it will cut at the slightest touch. The Trail Master® balances approximately 3/4" in front of the guard for a slightly blade-heavy feel that is ideal for delivering heavy chopping and slashing strokes. The Trail Master's® Kray-Ex™ handle is 5" long and deeply checkered for a non-slip, shock absorbing grip. What's more, its contoured cross section helps prevent the knife from shifting or turning in the hand when striking full power blows. The double guard is very study and rigidly fixed into place. It is long enough to keep fingers off the blade, yet short enough to avoid being tangled in clothing or equipment when the Trail Master® is drawn. VG-1 San Mai III® blade: If you want a Bowie knife that requires minimum maintenance and is practically immune to water, salt, air, or the humidity of a jungle environment, the VG-1 San Mai III® Trail Master® is for you! This Bowie will outperform any other stainless steel Bowie in the world in terms of strength and toughness. And, as an added bonus, this Trail Master® is equipped with a beautiful rolled edge, capable of easily severing 4" or more of free hanging manila rope! Information from Cold Steel. Nice big ole blades.....biggest blades I have are a Cold Steel Recon Tanto & an OKC Raider Bowie & Fiddleback Machete. Like the grippy handles from Cokd Steel too. 👍🏻
How is it to sharpen such a large convex edge, it’s the main reason I haven’t bought this guy yet. Makes me a lil nervous with sharpening….. 🤦🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
I don't let the blade get blunt and use a double sided strop (black and green compound) to refine/maintain the edge. There's videos on RUclips about this if you want to check them out. Thanks for watching Treyh007
I use diamond stones on mine, leaves marks wheb sharpening convex but I don't care..it just need to be razor sharp. I keep my wrist loose and flex the hand slightly up and down to get the convex..it is actually easier than sharpening to a specific angle..since you are actually changing the angle all the time, don't have to be that precise. Afterwards strop on chromium oxide leather strop. Back to factory sharpeness..all the time.
I think the sheath is good because it is Cordura which is a ballistic nylon with good wear resistance. But I understand some might want a good leather sheath for the price of the knife.
My sheath that came with the knife lasted less than a week. A rivet at the top pulled through, and there was other damage resulting from the knife being inserted and taken out. That's when I decided to have a decent sheath made. Rob's sheath exceeded every expectation I had!
5:20 "Full flat grind" (Trail Master) - Actually, it is a full convex grind right down to the edge with NO no secondary bevel, not even a micro-bevel. But, certainly not a flat grind at all. My Trail Master exceeded all my expectations! I would, however, have liked a better sheath. I have since acquired a top notch leather sheath made specially for me by Rob Evans (in Wales, UK) and I would recommend his work without reservation!

@@knifevideochannel4657 Yes, edge geometry is just as important, or even more important than steel choice. SOG's bowies are mostly in AUS-8A, which is chemically indistinguishable from 8Cr13MoV, and they survive chopping tests without edge damage. I think the closest comparable to VG-1 is AUS-10A.

Real letdown a Secure-Ex sheath wasn't in the box. What's interesting is the advertising for the new budget A2 version shows a Secure-Ex sheath in package? !? Thanks for watching
I love the blade, but that handle kept me from buying it. It's small for my hands and I keep my opinion that rubber has no place on a knife's handle. I prefer removable scales, micarta, g10 or wood.
I haven’t had issues with the Kray-ex Material on the SRK, But the Trailmaster has a thinner handle profile which may cause issues without gloves. I agree on the Micarta and G10 being the preferred material with removable scales. Thanks for watching
Interesting, the Darn Dao was probably modeled after the Guan Dao (pronounced Guah-n Dah-o), a chinese polearm that is often depicted as being used by generals and other high ranking officers, often on horseback. As for the Trailmaster VG1 San Mai III, I'm between this and the Boker Arbolito El Gigante. I might even want to pick up both, then swap the Trailmaster into the Boker's sheath. That cordura sheath is a piece of junk, a total disservice to the quality of the knife.
Thanks for the info on the potential inspiration for Bob Lums Darn Dao, Love that blade. I agree about the sheath being a a letdown (almost an afterthought) in the overall package. Hopefully my wife will make me a custom Leather scabbard eventually for this beauty. Thanks for watching
I picked up the El Gigante a month ago and I'm measuring the blade right now, and it is 9.25" from the guard to the tip. I saw another video where someone stuck the Cold Steel into an El Gigante sheath and it fit.
Secure Ex will scratch the living daylights out of the Trail Master. My San Mai Srk, Recon Tanto, and Master Hunter are all scratched to hell and I haven't used them yet.

@@knifevideochannel4657 thank you for the review!
I understand your point on the sheath! My example does seem cheaply made. Thanks for watching
I knew if it was full convex but must have spaced out while making the video. Thanks for letting me know Dennis. My wife makes awesome leather sheaths and will eventually get around to the Trailmaster. Thanks for watching
Love mine to bits
Awesome Knife... thanks for watching
@@knifevideochannel4657 Anytime
@@knifevideochannel4657 I switched out the sheath for the O1’s Secure Ex
Since I messed up the 01 version
Had to cut off some knobs in it to make sure it fit
@@jnzupka Nice Mod Jamie! I'm hoping my wife will make me a custom leather sheath when she gets time?
@@knifevideochannel4657 I hope so
Very cool beautiful is it convex????
Yes, Just like a big Bark River ! I don't usually show cutting paper in my videos because it's a worthless display IMO. That being said, I was going to show how this beautiful 5/16" Blade CURLED thin magazine paper, But forgot to show.
Impressive edge geometry and finish
Out of the Japanese plant. The Laminate line is very symmetrical on both sides, Much more then most Spyderco blades I've used. Thanks for watching.
thanks for pointing out some salient details. shocking the Frost Cutlery level nylon sheath. too bad about the A2 version being scrapped as a result of the buyout. R.I.P. Cold Steel
I've enjoyed Cold Steel throughout my hobby, Even as my interest has progressed to nicer production and customs. I must say this Knife has the biggest contrast between beautiful well made blade compared to total cheap out sheath. Luckily my wife makes awesome leather sheaths.
Hopefully we won't see clam shell packaging in 8CR13MOV and no name Stainless steel from a GSM run CS, In the future. Thanks for watching
The A2 version was scrapped before the buy out.
@@knifevideochannel4657 they are doing more 3v versions although they are Hella expensive!!! Midway has the recon scout in cpm3v on sale right now for 199.99!!! That is a big chunk of 3v for that price!!! Better hurry!!! Last year midway was selling them for 300 bucks, and the price will probably go back up!!!
@@knifevideochannel4657 GSM also brought back the talwar although it ain't cheap, but it's cpms35vn
Thank for the Tip on Midway, I'll probably pick one up. Like you stated, Every other online vendor is $403.00
I have the O1 version, and it has the krayex sheath. That's crazy the more expensive one has a crap sheath. The O1 has a v-grind. I don't know why the differences in what is basically the same knife, but I've had myTtrailmaster for 3 or 4 years now, so maybe that's why, who knows.
The Pictures of the new lower cost A2 version show the Secure-Ex sheath, Nuts! I wonder if Cold Steel thinks the more brittle VG1 core benefits from the Convex grind?
Does the large gaurd negatively impact hard use in your experience? I really like this knife and plan to get the A2 version too. Thanks for watching
@@knifevideochannel4657 It can get in the way if you like to choke up on the blade for fine work, but overall, I've been able to work with it. I'd prefer it without the top quillion though.
Thanks Timbo! Looking forward to using the Trailmaster.
@@timbo4374 I guess Cold Steel was sold to a private equity firm (GSM) a few days ago!
Cold Steel was a gateway into the hobby and I've always had a solt spot for their products, Especially the nicer models. Bummed
@@knifevideochannel4657 Yes, but I'm not buying into the panic that is spreading. CHeck out Lynn Thompson's response here on their youtube channel. Both him, as well as Andrew Demko are staying with the company. This is more of a case of a cash infusion to help the company not only survive, but grow in these hard times. This pandemic is hurting many business. When people become unemployed, the tend to cut way back on their purchases of non essentials like knives. Here's the link.

I've found that VG-1 is prone to pitting.
Have you tried a VG1 blade this thick with a convex edge? These knives have shown amazing toughness in multiple videos. I'm looking forward to trying it during desert season this year. Thanks for watching
@@knifevideochannel4657 I've only experienced it on Cold Steel kitchen knives. I would never buy another knife with it because of its poor corrosion resistance. Not sure how Cold Steel manages to justify the price on the Trailmaster. It's basically a budget steel.
@@sheltermonkey6065 I have a few of Cold Steel Kitchen knives(commercial series) in 4116 , So I can't say anything about VG1 in food use. That being said my VG1 SRK (my son has one too) has performed stellar and hasn't suffered Major edge damage! We've stabbed through sheetrock, Ammo cans, And a Honda CVCC hood in the desert. I think edge geometry has a lot to do with VG1 doing good on SRK and Trailmaster!
I didn't know AUS 8 was the same composition as 8CR13MOV , Thanks for the info. I've had good success with Cold Steel AUS-8A.
I bought my wife a cheap med sized fixed blade to learn knife/baton skills while we camp in the desert. The Schrade SCHF 10 in 8CR13MOV has been indestructible for her so far.
This knife on eBay is $745 in Australia
Unreal! It's amazing to me how much prices vary in different parts of the world. Thanks for watching SF!

My trailmaster is carbonV, and scary sharp...
The Trailmaster definitely is a beautiful well made blade. The sharpest fixed blade I've ever gotten from a production company in ANY Thickness. ..very impressive. Thanks for watching
The sheath that comes with the Cold Steel San-Mai 3 Trailmaster is very cheap for a knife that cost more than $250.00. I ditched it when I got my Trailmaster and had a riveted kydex sheath made for it.
Who made your stealth? Thanks for watching
@@knifevideochannel4657 - Grizzly Outdoor. The one I got was the Grizzly Elite model. It is built like a tank.
@@F15ElectricEagle Thanks for info... I'll look them up . Kydex would be awesome for the Trailmaster
I know the sheath is crappy , but the Secure X sheath will scratch the shit out of that Gorgeous Trail Master , I would get a custom kydex sheath ....👍
Never thought of how soft the cladding is! Spyderco HAP 40/SUS 410 blades scratch like crazy. Luckily my wife makes awesome leather sheaths for my knives. Thanks for watching
I don't believe the A2 version will eventuate as Lynn recently sold Cold Steel to another company
Just read the entire BF thread early this morning, Wow! I don't think GSM Outdoors will keep the nicer highend blades in San Mai and 3V. Everything will end up 8CR13MOV and no name Stainless. Thanks for the info and for watching.

Great knife but it looks like they really cheaped out on the sheath.
Real letdown a Secure-Ex sheath wasn't in the box. What's interesting is the advertising for the new budget A2 version shows a Secure-Ex sheath in package? !?
Thanks for watching
Sheath is good.
Thanks for watching
The sheath is an embarrassment for a knife this nice.
Totally agree Eric, Hopefully my wife will make a custom leather version when she gets time.
Definitely a HOF knife for me.
It's a beautiful Knife that's just ridiculously Sharp OOTB. Thanks for watching R. A.
I just LOVE mine !!!...SEXIEST blade ive EVER seen !!!...
It's a sweet knife!
Leather sheaths are the best imo. Kydex is friggin noisy.
Especially with Stainless blades like the Trailmaster ! Thanks for watching
That knife shoulda came with a quality leather sheath!! WTF??
I said the same thing when I initially opened the box. Thanks for watching Mark
You won't be able to do that. The El Gigante has an 8.3 inch blade and the trailmaster is 9.5 inches.
I picked up the El Gigante a month ago and I'm measuring the blade right now, and it is 9.25" from the guard to the tip. I saw another video where someone stuck the Cold Steel into an El Gigante sheath and it fit.
Wow, that sheath is a travesty what the hell Lynn Thompson really?
Unfortunately t don't think the new owners (GSM Outdoors ) will even keep this San Mai Trailmaster in production. Bummed

Secure Ex will scratch the living daylights out of the Trail Master. My San Mai Srk, Recon Tanto, and Master Hunter are all scratched to hell and I haven't used them yet.
