What other items from the 1970s do you remember being surprisingly affordable?
I was in line the other day, looked down and saw a dime. I bent down, picked it up not realizing the guy in front of me and a guy behind me with his daughter, about 10 years old, were watching me. I showed it to them and told the little girl, "When I was your age this dime would have bought me a candy bar." She looked incredulous, but the guy in front said, "Yes, I remember those days."
In 1972 my dad would give me a quarter to go to the movies. That 25 cents covered admission to the Saturday afternoon matinee, a box of popcorn and a candy bar. And there was a water fountain in the lobby if I was thirsty.
Last time I went to the "bargain" movies it cost about $30.

@@drbluzer Me 2 - I watch what I can stream at home for free... you'd be surprised at the vast number of movies and tv shows that are available. I make my own popcorn n snacks. I actually like it better because I can pause it to go to the bathroom and I can smoke if I want, too. Cuddle with my cat... it's not so bad. Also, I gave up cable tv and my landline phone 12 years ago.
I'm 59 and the 70's comic books were either 10 cents or 25 cents but
i really miss those days especially with comic books and wrestling magazines
as well as fast food restaurants here in Oklahoma during the 70's, also sodas
and candy bars, those were the days for me but just memories now.

We have crooks for politicians . Their supposed to serve the people that elect them . Not get rich off of the people that elect them . 🤯 They are currently trying to get rid of someone that goes against their wealthy narrative . They just won't say it out loud .

I remember going to my high school football game and dance featuring a "live" band and not even spending $5.00 !
This was in the mid to late 1960's .
I went to see in concert "THE EDGAR WINTER GROUP" in the mid '70's and I spent about $6.00 for the ticket .
I worked at A & P grocery store in the 70's; 3 loaves bread/$1, whole chickens/29 cents/lb.
You could trust your car to the man who wears the star. Texaco.
I bought a gallon of chocolate milk last week at Walmart - it was nearly $6.
I can remember Burger Chef ads in my preschool days promoting what 15¢ could buy .
For 15 cents, a nickel and a dinner. At Burger Chef, you eat better every time......

My first hourly paying job was at BURGER CHEF ! The worst part of that job was when the manager sent me
out to clean up the parking lot and customers would sometimes throw food or soda at me .They were RUDE !!!

The way I see it, the value a person places on a loaf of bread or gallon of gas hasn't changed much over time. The amount of money in our pocket has.
Love how they rationalize all the increases in terms of quality, as if everything has become better. Try sitting on the hood of your car without bending it or getting a decent meal at a restaurant.
I remember one time in the 80s We was all drunk and Went to McDonald's for 27 Cheeseburgers!
Cigarettes were 45 cents a pack first time I bought one, when I was about 14!
Try 2-3 dollars for a candy bar
I remember gallon of milk for $1.59
$.99 on sale! $.25 a quart!
Stuff was made to last people enjoyed life more than today they were not terrified like people today

When I was in elementary school in the 70s I could mail a letter to my Grandparents for 2 cents
The rise of prices has become obscene. I never eat at any fast food outlets any longer and as far as getting a greeting from an online card is impersonal a lazy way to connect with anyone. I never respond to those messages.
Dumping loads of dirty diapers in landfills is more 'environmentally-friendly'? Mothers used to wash diapers & reuse them.
It's interesting they don't site the main reason for most price increases. Corporate greed!
so, imagine you have a small business where you made a cute craft trinket that customers were willing to pay you $5 for and cost of supplies was only $1, you would net $4 per item sold and over the year easily make about $10,000 because it didn't take you long to make them, you had a great system in place.
Then after about a year and a half, your cost of supplies start to increase and your net income starts to decrease. You decide to increase your price to reflect that cost, right?
is that greed?
then after a few years you decide you really don't want to spend the time and effort making these cute trinkets, so you hire a few young people to make them in your stead. you need to make enough money to pay them as well as pay yourself for your creativity and ingenuity, so you raise the price for your trinkets and double production because you have more than one employee. Now your net income after sales and expenses has become $20,000 for the year.
is that greed?
then you decide instead of working out of your garage, you want to rent a small building and hire more people, cost of supplies rise again, cost of living goes up, employees demand a wage increase, and you file your business as a corporation of less than 50 employees, all who are now eligible for benefits for full time or part time employment, so you raise your prices on your cute popular trinkets. you design more trinkets for a variety because sales begin to decline on the original, and you spend a budget on advertizing, quadruple your production and sales, everyone is happy and now you make $80,000 as CEO of your company
which you created
and employed people with fair pay for their work
is that greed?
this could snowball into a great income opportunity for yourself and change your standard of living and you have earned it with intelligence and integrity. But the larger your corporation grows, the larger the expenses, and after ten, twenty years, inflation and regulations kick you in the rear. eventually you must either raise prices and freeze wages and hiring or close down to file bankruptcy because you borrowed money thinking you would be able to pay it all back with successful sales.
and now all the employees have unionized and are calling you greedy and making demands you cannot fulfill unless you take a paycut, and even then it still doesn't cover the costs.
but you would never claim to be greedy. so you close your business, lose money, and all of your emoloyees lose their jobs, and your trinkets are no longer for sale, you are tired of the rat race, and decide to work for walmart because it's the only job out there currently, and by the way, they used to sell your cute trinkets until you went out of business, because you didn't want to be greedy.
Try politicians being greedy 😂
Please remember that money back then our currency okay currency was based off the gold and silver standards now they're based off of thin air that's the difference So money does not matter so why are people getting mad when people fight for wage increases that's just stupid but then again American snow offense aren't that bright
A lot of the price increases are just pride, what old-timers called being 'high-minded', "craft beers" being a good example.
If I hear "sustainability" one more time I'm gonna scream-- what the heck is "sustainably" anyway.

What's to laugh about?! The point is that wages have not kept up with inflation due to corporate GREED! They've been shitting on the working class for decades and nothing has changed - it's only gotten worse!
