Shrimp Burgers (tiny shrimp breaded and fried into a burger shape) has become part of the lifestyle of the Outer Banks of NC. They may not be good for you but they're yummy!
We made salmon cakes not crab cakes.
Chicken pot pie! Mmmmmm
A lot of these dishes are still made to this day. Liver and Offal are popular outside the US.. Milk Toast is basically soaked French Toast, Cabbage Rolls are found across Europe and Pork Cake is basically a Pork Based Meatloaf of Eastern Europe. These are not bygone dishes . The problem is that the US has now become dependent on crap TV Meals and fast food
i was in middle and high school in the 70’s…ham salad?
I’ve tried the pear recipe. To me it’s not good at all.
I make sloppy joes, beef stroganoff over rice (hubby likes it over noodles) taco pie, meatloaf (different every time), enchiladas and chili, of course. My Mom’s Baby porcupines is one of my favorites, but I have not been able to replicate it. Totally American cuisine!
I grew up with pinto beans rice cornbread fried potatoes. Love it today.
Squirrel stew is incredible.
The food does not taste the same anymore, its meant yo be that way
Clinton once served the presidential salami to an intern.
LMAO. We had ham salad sandwiches tonight an chili cheese dogs just a few days ago. We have green bean casserole every Thanksgiving. Taco salad is on the menu for Sunday. Chicken and dumplings, pot roast , Spam, potato skins, Lunchables and so many more of these are still around.
I was born in 1970 and still grew up eating these things and still eat them. I was farm raised and was taught frugal spending by parents and Grandparents.
I can not eat a rodent.
refrigerators are costly over two thousand dollars.
we lived in a city and I was like in farm life while rest family liked city stuff
in the 1950,s you can go to A&P and find cow heads in boxes to make head cheese they had the horns, hair on still. The box was closed but had peep holes . was refrigerated ,mother said do not look you do not want to see it.I looked anyways.
Am 66. I remember some of these. Am sharing this with my daughter and family that live with me. She will cook these recipes like the old fashioned way. Thank you.
There is a reason for this information! WAKE UP
I am an American combat vet that served in Korea, Germany and Iraq and I would much rather have served on our own border
I didn't grow up in the depression but my mother did and it's how she cooked. Now it's comfort food. And peanut butter soup is wonderful. Try it! You don't need a recipe, just a little creativity. Grandma sent us kids out to collect dandelion greens... Can't recommend them. We called them journey cakes not johnny cakes. The legs were from frogs! We caught them! Creamed peas on toast still makes my mouth water!! Nice walk down memory lane! Pot pie was terrific!!
Aspic is good.
Williamsburg offers a colonial style peanut soup at one of their taverns
Who are you people still eat this stuff
the three martini lunch. gone.
Dandelion leaves are in the mix salad greens
My grandfather made spam and egg sandwiches until he passed away in 1990s
"Operation, the wacky doctor game." Anyone remember Chinese Jacks?
hi born in 1980 ate my way through the 90s all i gotta say to this is ...wtf
my granny always made that hoover stew, tummy growled fssss
It was a lovely idea; I enjoyed it
Brings back awesome memories thank you.☀️🫡🇺🇲
I’m just glad they actually got all the facts about corned beef being an American adaptation of cabbage and bacon the Irish brought over. My understanding was that corned beef was an inexpensive cut Irish immigrants could buy at Jewish butchers/delis.
People are stupid the more they buy from grocery stores the longer they exist and the more they poison everyone.. support local farmers not the poison factory
Covering my eyes at the licorice jelly beans 🫘 😮
Love sauerkraut and sausages !!!
Love rice pudding and Abe Lincoln's desserts.
Ugh, boar! Squirrel , double ugh !!!! NO turtle anything please, 😮😢
"We once loved"? I STILL LOVE THEM!
Instead of chipped beef on toast, my grandmother (a depression era baby) would make us Creamed Tuna on toast. It sounds gross, but it was soooo good! Simple white sauce seasoned with Lawry’s seasoning salt. One of my cousins tried to make it but it was just not the same as Grandma’s version.
I'd like to double up on those 2 moms, especially the crazy eyed one !
They may have vanished for other people, but a number of these were staples of my childhood (currently in my 40s), and are common enough in the grocery stores near me in.
Okay, the egg drop soup and the noodles and cabbage one are basically in every Chinese restaurant. Also, I’m surprised by how many of these I have had and I’m only 34. Corn beef has is actually one of my favorite dishes!
Shepheard's PIE is made with Lamb mince, Cottage pie is with beef.
I still make cream peas on toast!
Yum liver and onions
Thank you for sharing my memories of in between meal lunch time
I remember chipped beef on toast, my dad who was army called it "SOS". Military for ShIt on shingle. Never did figure out where or why they called it that. Also had a lot of the goulash with hamburger and pasta in tomato sauce.
I love mutton! Lamb was cheap when I grew up in the 70's & 80's. I love lamb and mutton, cheap & high end. Awesome!!
These are all great ideas. Mmm good
