Ralfi's Alley- F-5E Air To Ground Pound Mission

- Coltrouge, Weld and myself decided to head over to blue flag and see what kind of business an F-5E Tiger II has in that kind of environment. We knew that Air to Air was going to be tricky at best so we decided to have at it with Air to Ground, more specifically with HE rockets and AP gun ammo.
We picked a target on the largest mountain peak in the whole map, and had Weld go support us in the F-15 while Colt and I stuck with the F-5. Our plan was to use Weld in his F-15 to overfly the target and get the attention of the AAA and SAMs while we would roll in and try to take them out in our first pass. Unfortunately Weld got a tad bit ahead of himself and we spaced out the attack too much, which is why the Strelas immediately turned their attention to us as we rolled in. This time however we were ready (we tried this the first time around and got shot down by the Strelas because we didn't know they would be there, this was our second attempt).
We were using the "simple radio" mod which is pretty much a necessity now for many servers, mainly on the blue flag server, and this is what you hear when people are transmitting with a radio like voice. In order to talk between just ourselves (since we only have the one UHF radio for the F-5) we stuck to using our personal team speak server. Additionally what you hear in the background as radio comms throughout the whole video is just another mod I added to my RAE sound mod that replaces the squelch sound with faint radio comms. You should be able to find it if you google for the dcs radio squelch mod or something like that.
On top of that I am running Bartheks texture mod, and Mustangs tree shadows among some other minor mods that aren't seen here.

The F-5E is such a sexy beast! Can't wait until Friday when they'll hopefully fix all the issues with the Tiger's gunsight, missiles, etc.

Fritz Le They moved on from the game; Time Zone; Level of interest from most people ( how serious they want to be and how much they know their plane); People don't make co-op missions as they used to do back in the a-10C prime days. I don't have the time for a dedicated squadron and I don't play that much too. I just want to be able to hop on with couple of friends, decide what we want to do playing seriouslyish while still messing about. Sorry for the long reply

The only comment I would make is that formation flying is nice in peace time, but in war you would probably want to be much further apart. The Brits found out the hard way in WW-2 that tight formations of 3 planes (a Vic) were spending all of their time looking at each other to avoid collisions, and not nearly enough time looking for bad guys. Also, spreading out allows for maneuvering to see and shoot down planes coming up behind each others tail, while a tight formation means nobody sees the bad guy until he is shooting one of you down.
And that's all neat and shit, but we had an f15 a mile back with his radar turned on scanning up ahead of us in our squad who later went ahead of us to give us air superiority while we were taking out ground targets. And we did separate before making our strike.
Damnit, I didn't want to miss this flight :( but I did..

If you switch your flaps from Auto to FXD you can conserve fuel. just make sure you switch back to auto when you start attacking or defending.
Man I love these vids and would love to play on the Blue Flag servers, but how in the name of God do you learn all this stuff?
The correct radio chatter, how to set up the aircraft, how to properly manoeuvre to avoid AA/AAA, what weapons to use for what, how to plot navigation, on top of learning the different systems for different aircraft.
Much respect to the skilled DCS players because I'm sure it would take me far longer than reasonable to learn all this.

That texture mod is really nice, but the tree draw distance was a little distracting as you flew low through the valley towards the end of the video. Is that an issue with the texture itself or just the settings for this video? I'm tempted to try it out, but I know ED themselves are reworking this map to improve it visually. No idea when that is due however.
Ralfi, Have you figure out all of your HOTAS binds yet? I am getting there but feel like I might be missing some.

Hi, how do you zoom in and out like that? i got trackir 5 and Hotas Warthog and when i "put my head forward" to zoom in with trackir that's not zooming in like in your video :( i got the default bindings but i don't know where to bind the zoom keys so that can be easier and smoother. (sry for my bad english btw)

I'm curious why you didn't set the reticle Depression for rockets and dive angle ?
It seems to me that using the correct setting can greatly increase your accuracy. I find this is true for rockets while it may be not so true for bombs.

On a side note, will you be trying DCS with a Rift/Vive? I've recently gotten a Rift and it's fucking incredible, I thought the resolution wouldn't be good enough but I can read absolutely everything in a cockpit, and I've actually gotten BETTER at tallying targets compared to Trackir.

Maybe it's cause I dropped £550 on something and I feel like I have to justify my purchase lol.
I've been trying to use my Vive with it, but tracking has had some severe lag to it and a lot of jitter which I don't get with other desk Vive games (like Elite Dangerous). I'm gonna chalk it up to not having adequate RAM and a dated motherboard, but still, frustrating.
You need to have around 90fps in DCS with the vive to stop it from jittering.
i wish i was this good. or rather i wish i had the patience to practice enough to be this good.

where do you find servers where people play with realistic radio comms and AWACS and whatnot?
BLUE FLAG, then SIMPLE RADIO when servers have that turned on.
I'm just wondering.. When you drop your external fuel tanks and rocket pods, is that for gameplay reasons or is that something that's done in real life? I know they do it in critical situations like when evading missiles, but I'm wondering if it's normal to drop everything on real missions (not training ofc).
The drag it creates and reduction in speed and roll rate and etc and so forth is huge. When you're done with them, dump them, that way you can be ready to do what you need to do without the weights dragging you down.

how can i get the squelch mod to work with the f15? I tried adding it to my rwr mod but no dice. Any advice?
You can't. You have to have a clickable cockpit where you can actually flip the squelch switch, so no FC3 aircraft.
I have a question. Does the MiG-21 burn more fuel or does the F5 burn more?

HSI and F10 map, literally the easiest plane to nav in if you know where to go.
Would you recommend your texture mod more than Starway's? Looks pretty good from your video, thats for sure.
They are both good, but I personally like certain features of Bartheks better, especially Winter and one more season that escapes me.

Depends on what you want to do and what you're style is. They are very different aircraft with different capabilities. It's up to you mate.

Probably better filled out than the Mirage. There are only a few things that need patching up for the F5
