Having recently been playing DCS and having a close encounter with a TU-22M Backfire I could see that comming a mile away! I was thinking, don't do that and I was right.
My ex-stepfather flew F-4Es and F-4Ds and intercepted Tu-95s out of Iceland and West Germany in the 70s and early 80s. Flew right next their cockpits a few times. Has severe hearing loss for doing so, since those turboprops were so loud. He always said “whether a Backfire, Bear, or Beagle, NEVER get behind them because of their gun. Be at least a few miles back if you are going to use a missile, and go for bore sight on your Aim-7, that way you don’t have to maneuver much as the missile rides your beam to the bomber. Ideally, you’d never use your gun or gun pod on a bomber, but if you had to, come in vertically so that rear gun couldn’t come into play. Never turn with a fishbed in the area, go vertical and roll back if you need to turn around, use your Phantom’s brute power as it’s your only advantage over them in a dogfight. If they kick in burner and run, don’t waste a growl on them if they’re more than a two miles away, your missile will lose energy before it catches up.” The Sparrow was designed to shoot down bombers, so the existing kills against MiG-21s in real life is actually very impressive… especially considering in Vietnam that 3-out-of-4 Sparrows fired dropped like a fuel tank, and only 1-in-4 that ignited actually tracked their target, with only half of those actually hitting the target and 1-in-10 at that point not even detonating… of which the Sparrow I know of that didn’t detonate still sheered the wing of the MiG-21 off just outside the aileron, and still didn’t take it down. It’s why Phantom crews often ripple-fired Sparrows, dropping two in a quick click-click, and after 1.4 seconds listening for the missile rocket’s distinct ignition sound. I know of one time both Sparrows not only ignited, but hit the target MiG and detonated-the rarest of rare occurrences in Vietnam. The best way to fight in an F-4 is to high-yo yo / boom and zoom at a steep angle so a rear gunner can’t get you in track, or just Sparrow the bomber when at the very edge of being BVR and IVR. Very fuel thirsty and smokey, but despite being an aerodynamic brick, the F-4 could go Mach 2 or 1,490 mph, give or take a few hundred mph… and is the only aircraft to have a recorded supersonic gun kill in combat-occurred during the rescue mission to get Roger Lockhart out of Vietnam (successfully) when an F-4E took out a MiG-19 (I think) at Mach 1.2 when flying off the deck after his two Aim-7s went fuel-tank mode and moonshot, followed by his Aim-4s first going Icarus Mode (“oh, big bright heat source! must get closer!”) or straight up refusing to even launch (“I like my wing wax, thank you”). Bottom line, my favorite jet, Wolfpack. Do her justice, and do not get chewed up by a bomber’s gun, please? She’s a tough bird, but not invincible… and death by rear gunner would just be embarrassing.
Don't listen to anyone who tells you that you need a crazy fancy system to run DCS smoothly with good graphics, or an expensive GPU/CPU combo. You don't have to break the bank to enjoy the game fully.
Your AIM-9s were tracking just fine, the issue was that you were in a tail chase against a fast target (T-22M in full burner). The missiles ran out of speed before they got to the target. Easy mistake to make against Backfires because they look like a fighter but they're actually huge, so when it looks like you are close enough you are still pretty far away.
Maverick: Goes inverted to flip Russians the bird. Wolfpack: Writes Hello and a draws a smiley emoji on the cockpit. You'll never guess which one finished first in Top Gun school.
Grew up in the 60's and 70's during the Vietnam War. I remember the pilots complained about missing when they had good tone and were locked on the target. Your kill ratio on the missiles seems about right. If you want to see a great film with cool F-4 flying, check out 'The Great Santini.'
I definitely expected Jester to jump out the moment those rounds made contact with you 😆 It seems that Growling Sidewinder's conversations with him have really sunk in and he's starting to show some bravery!
I'm so used to seeing the WWII planes in DCS on your vids that I forgot DCS even had modern jets. Please, do more, we'd love to see a campaign with these as well~
This was a really great dive into the F-4E Phantom II. I would love to see more videos in the craft from you in the future! It has been such an exciting and difficult plane to learn and master, but the challenge only adds to the fun and joy.
Hi Wolfpack. I was lucky enough to help test the Rolls-Royce engines that were installed in the RAF and Royal Navy Fleet air arm Phantoms in the 80s. I can not tell you what a Spey 202 sounds like in an enclosed space. Interesting fact the engines use 0.7 gallons of fuel each when on max re-heat. You soon empty the tanks when you light those babies up.
I would love to see a norwegian red storm rising esc campaign in DCS from you. The story-based sim content is one of my favorite things about your videos
When you said " Nice and smokey-as a Phantom should be." I laughed out loud. Since I was a kid in the 70s and loving the F4 no truer words were ever spoken. Ha
Had to laugh for a moment that Jester was counting in potatoes. Had no idea that was an actual thing outside of just elementary recess games from when I was a kid.
I got a couple flights in last night finally. All in all about what I expected, which is a very good thing. A couple observations… - On my first landing, which was a bit rough at Creech but certainly nowhere near as hard as a carrier landing, Jester makes a comment about needing the undercarriage replaced and then I find out I have no brakes. Now, I’m an old US Navy carrier guy. I’m used to planes that get slammed on a pitching deck all day long. That little tap and I lose my brakes??? C’mon, man! - I didn’t look too hard cuz I was wanting to get in the air and I knew I had yet to spend an hour or more setting up the controls, but all I saw were skins for either USAF jets or allied nation jets. Nothing from the United States Navy. I mean, the thing was designed and built as a FLEET defense aircraft for the US Navy. They have six skins for the USAF Thunderbirds, but not one navy skin. What is up with that? As an ex-US Navy flight deck veteran that actually served on a carrier that still had a squadron of Phantoms on board, I take great offense to this. - I may be doing something wrong procedure wise and no, I haven’t RtFM yet, but I found as I was screaming around the southern Nevada skies last night, that no matter how I set the radar up from the WSO seat, once I went back to the pilot seat, after a second or two the radar would go back to a B scope and 50 mile range. Am I missing something there? Is it supposed to do that and if so, how can I change it? Surely the pilot can do a PPI and isn’t locked into a B scope. I mean, it does show PPI for a second before it changes. - I’m also wondering why there doesn’t seem to be a Jester command to change ranges on the radar. I can tell him to change the elevation and scan size, but not the range? Edit: I looked again this morning and no, there are no US Navy skins at all. C’mon guys, this thing was built for the Navy! Edit: Okay, I get it. The US Navy never used the F-4E, only the B and J. Well I hope they’ll do a US Navy variation some day.
Been watching your channel for years, since about 1500 subs. Just haven't been as into your videos lately. Glad to see something new and in the air. Not Yuri, but I'll take it.
how do you lock onto enemies that are flying towards you at range? my jester cant find anything untill its too late at aruond ~5 miles (we are both areound 10k feet)
Actually, The F-4 is currently still in operational service as a front-line fighter(-bomber) with the Greek, Turkish, South-Korean and Iranian air forces. The South-Korean ones are to be retired this year, though. I wonder where you got the idea that they're in use as training aircraft, though.
"A gun kill would be fun"
Tu-22 has tail gun
Wolfpack "Ah, I was't familiar with your game."
Having recently been playing DCS and having a close encounter with a TU-22M Backfire I could see that comming a mile away! I was thinking, don't do that and I was right.
"A gun kill would be fun"
Tu-22: "Yes, it would"
This had me rolling.
Just as I was thinking to myself "Doesn't the Backfire have a tail gun...?"
Yup, as he lined up for the gun shot I thought - the tail gunner must be loving this!

I'm saving this comment, in the hopes that one day I will build a killer PC that can run DCS at 2k graphics

Not Mav, because Iceman finished first...

Yes, great movie.
Wolfpack, PLEASE find someone to be your RIO! I don't play DCS at all but I love watching F-14 crew gameplay.
I’d do it if the timings aligned
Hell yah Wolfpack!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Tricker!!!
The Tu-22M Tail gun gets the uninitiated every time lol
Probably one of the reasons tailguns exist, really
You have the best intro's and overall sim content man. The intro voiceover is always on point, the content solid, and it helps this one has an F-4E. 😉
I appreciate that!
I definitely expected Jester to jump out the moment those rounds made contact with you 😆 It seems that Growling Sidewinder's conversations with him have really sunk in and he's starting to show some bravery!
Intercept two Tu-22's
8:20 Spotswood: "That was bad, Intelligence. Very bad Intelligence."
I.N.T.E.L.L.I.G.E.N.C.E. : "I'm sorry."

I'm so used to seeing the WWII planes in DCS on your vids that I forgot DCS even had modern jets.

It fills me with joy when I see an F4 phantom pilot wth shades
It's awesome haha
I have deemed this video worthy of watching while eating my food.
Nice intercept. F-4 Thunderhogs FTW! I worked on F-4 Super J, S and RF-4Bs in the Corps.
Salute. RF4-Cs, USAF
We love wolfpack DCS vids keep it up
1:55 Man, how can you not love Wolfpack?
That happy face above engines at 02:10 and 02:18 :D
Lucky bastard, Heatblur gave you access. Hell yeah
New map, new plane, cool music... Man this just put smile on my face. You should make more DCS stuff!
This was a really great dive into the F-4E Phantom II. I would love to see more videos in the craft from you in the future! It has been such an exciting and difficult plane to learn and master, but the challenge only adds to the fun and joy.
2:18 The plane looks so happy!
How do you record your video feed? It is perfect quality, even on yt. Rare thing among dcs youtubers.
Hi Wolfpack. I was lucky enough to help test the Rolls-Royce engines that were installed in the RAF and Royal Navy Fleet air arm Phantoms in the 80s. When the music kicks in just as you launch a fox 1😗👌
man your vids just hit different dude! one of my fav preview vids of the F4!
TU-22 is called a "Backfire" for a reason there Wolfie...
One of the few times NATO reporting names are appropriate XD
I always love when my games of interest intersect with Wolfpack's!
100% need more of the phantom. That was awesome. Great video
I would love to see a norwegian red storm rising esc campaign in DCS from you.
The story-based sim content is one of my favorite things about your videos
Migs didn't have any missiles, did they?
this feels like a scene out of a Tom Clancy novel, like Red Storm Rising
2:17 Look at him, how happy he is to be protecting your 6 from enemy radars!
Love seeing you post DCS videos my old friend.
Cold war is where DCS needs to head
Absolutely
Your video reminded me of my days with the 49th TFW we flew Pantoms out of Holloman AFB, NM
@0:46 can't unsee the crazy happy face on the tail of the jet.
I like the little smiley face on the back of the phantom
Great early look, mate! It would be awesome to see a full campaign from you.
I couldn't help but keep thinking how pretty the Tu-22M3's blue afterburners are 🥰
Haha 86 fighter wing,it’s now the airlift wing, used to be under them, great times 😢❤😊
That was awesome 👍🐺🏴
I am so looking forward to the F-4! Too bad its delayed by a day, but it is what it is.
Unexpected but amazing surprise. Glad you got a copy.
When you said " Nice and smokey-as a Phantom should be." I laughed out loud. Since I was a kid in the 70s and loving the F4 no truer words were ever spoken. Ha
Just wait - somebody somewhere is going to figure out a way of ensuring every pixel plane Wolfpack flies has a smiley
I worked on these during my apprenticeship. Many many years ago.
Phantoms taking off combined with heavy metal was a good mix!
Oh for sure
Had to laugh for a moment that Jester was counting in potatoes. Had no idea that was an actual thing outside of just elementary recess games from when I was a kid.

F-4 is a bit beyond my time but this and the F-14 are so beautiful in my opinion
That was cool. I would like more episodes please.
.. needs a turret ... :D
Great video, love the jet action.
Grease pencil? Now we can feel like Fortis 1: "15 gallons, understood".
I love this plane so much that i have my own nickname in its honour.
👁👄👁 The smiley face on the tail 😭 lol 😂
Nobody narrates as well as my man wolf from the U-Boat series to anything always so interesting.
Just love a phantom. Great job
WP: A gun kill would be fun!
Tu-22: It would be fun wouldn't it?
12:18 little did I know that counting to potato was an actual tatic used by military fighter jet pilots
Wolfpack345, I loved this video so much, I had to hit the like button!
Thanks!
Hopefully heatblur makes an f111 one day… 🙏🙏🙏
F-111 has already been confirmed to be in development. Forget which developer though
Vark moment
Thank you for another awesome vid wolfpack:)
The F4 was a plane I knew about but wasn't particularly interested in it until I started watching a series named Gate.
that was a fun watch, thanks
Damn. That Kola map is the ultimate 90's experience...
It sure is!
@@Wolfpack345 I meant that it's main Eurooe and... the textures resolution is worth the 90s as well ;)
Great video, I have the hardest time getting replays to cooperate.
BASED BASED BASED BASED BASED BASED BASED
Ready to hop on cold war
THE PLANE IS SO HAPPY!!!!! 2:17
This looks awesome!
kudos for being the first youtuber to not use aim9ms against old soviet equipment
Yee-haw!!! Keep them coming.
Phantoms are Phorever
That was cool man
Hope you do more of the phantom it’s a great bird
Mate, I would love to see the F111 in battle against the Soviets.
Boris was getting lit up :)
1:53 ROFL 😂😂😂
how do you lock onto enemies that are flying towards you at range? my jester cant find anything untill its too late at aruond ~5 miles (we are both areound 10k feet)
Ok... The F4 is awesome.
"It starts with the shades and ends with the fur cape." Lazerpig probably
Your own Your way to becoming an ace.
very exciting thumbs up video.
Why does it look like the flaps interfere with missiles at the back of the fuselage? Looks like there shut be collision issues on the models.
Wolf, that was awesome
Oh yes!!!!!!
There is a reason why the Phantom is still used as a trainer today
Actually, The F-4 is currently still in operational service as a front-line fighter(-bomber) with the Greek, Turkish, South-Korean and Iranian air forces. The South-Korean ones are to be retired this year, though. I wonder where you got the idea that they're in use as training aircraft, though.
F4 + GHPC combo campaign.... a boy can dream.
That was great!
I play only WW2 DCS, how hard do you wolfpack or any people qualified to answer think it would be to pick up?
Cool. I wonder if this sim could let you re-create Cunningham’s famous dogfight?
Loving this.
Ok, tail-guns are still worth it, those twin 23mms almost got you, lol.
Are there going to be any Iron Hand/Wild Weasel missions?
F "effing" 4 Phantom. My favorite military jet of all time.
Cool 😎
Were you trying to replay Northern Fury H-Hour from CMANO? Great book also!
