Hi CG I really appreciate the fact that you take the time to respond to me. Thank you. You take the not so mature leaves and after washing them you cut them thinly cook for about ten minutes and then add the rice. Pretty much the same way you'd cook spinach or beans.

My favorite type of cabbage to eat is savoy cabbage, and I planted it from seed in spring and it is just now starting to form loose heads. I am hoping it will grow well here even though it doesn't get very cold. I may plant it again in fall to see if it prefers the colder weather.

Hi in my neck of the woods we use the leaves to cook in rice : cabbage and rice. Informative as usual. We also have problems with slugs and the Giant African snail. The hobbyist can also search the underside of the leaves for the cabbage butterfly eggs and destroy them before they metamorphose.

    • @CaliforniaGardening

The only video of yours I saw where you didn't get a harvest were the potatoes. Did you try those again? I tried potatoes 6 times with no success. hello....could you please tell me what kind of net are you using to protect the cabbage? Where can I buy the same?

What’s the size and type of net do you use? Do you have a link available?

Are the cabbages ruined if there is insect damage? I have a few that are growing in my back yard, but have no idea if they are ruined or not. (also noticed a few slugs on the plants)

Yes they are but you can just remove the damaged leaves and use the inside ones. The slugs usually cannot get inside the buds!

Can we weed out the canopy while the plant is still growing?
Both for cabbage and cauliflowers. Would the plant concentrate more on the fruit if we weed out a few leaves if there are too many?
    Thanks

Gaurav Mittal That is not recommended. The plant uses its entire canopy to develop the buds. Actually slugs/snail chew on the side leaves, which you can throw any ways!

Thanks for the netting tip! I lost all but one cabbage and brussel sprouts from the cabbage worms last year, I tried covering them with cheesecloth, but it was after they were bigger and I ended up trapping some hungry worms inside them and they made an all-you-eat buffet from them. This year I starting picking eggs off early but we had a heat wave (PA) and most of them bolted. Am I correct that they will not mature after they have sent up flower stalks? I tried cutting them off but they came right back. So frustrating because we should be in a cool period (50's now) but our weather keeps going up and down dramatically. I pulled them all but right now they are in containers until I decide what to do w/ them.

Brenda Collins Nice to know you liked the netting tip! I have never let a cabbage go to seed but yes, they will not mature after that. Happy Gardening!

Where did you get your B.T. from ? I checked with local home center but none of them sell it. The netting you are using looks quite big size of holes to stop bugs and butterfly. I think that netting is designed to stop birds eating fruit & Veggie. What is the smallest hole size item number for this netting if you have any idea. I have ordered nylon netting fabric that called Tule bolt which is pretty thin but i could not find anything else that would work for me. I have not received my netting yet but i have seen few green larva already eating my cabbage , broccoli, cauliflower, kale, collard green and brussol sprout that i have planted this year in fall season.

+Rudra Sharma The netting will deter the butterflies as they do not take a chance even if the holes might be a little bigger than them. You can buy the BT as well as the new on amazon: amzn.to/20zBJAd and amzn.to/1MnDYQX
