Great job installing the head gaskets! I have the same engine but with horizontal shaft, what are the indications that the head gaskets are blown. I feel like my engine is overheating a bit, sometimes I hear backfiring and popping. Thanks!
Great job. That sure looks like a lot of tedious little things in there to do. I have a horizontal 23 Vanguard that needs a head gasket. Should I do both at the same time? It looks like I may have to take it out of my tractor to get everything. oh joy! Lol. What is the copper spray for?
Thanks! I would do both while you have it apart. The small cost of parts vs. the time you'll save doing them both is well worth it. The copper spray is an adhesive that helps to seal the head gasket to both the engine block and the head. Good luck in your project!!
both head gaskets were blown, the 2nd one just less obvious. at 10:30 you can see it failed between the cylinder and the oil return (bottom left). Had you not changed it, it would still have been smoking big time. Thanks for the video, about to do this tomorrow :)
Having now taken it apart and discovering all of the grass between the cooling fins, how in the world would you keep the fins clean without removing all of the parts you removed?
Great question. In my opinion, it's kind of a design flaw. I usually use my backpack blower to clean it off after each use. When I store it for winter, I use my air compressor and an air gun to really get in there and clean things up.
All ways try to figure out why engine over heated, that’s why they usually blow head gasket Rat or mice nest are very comm and must have top cover removed and cleaned every year and several times during use Thank You 😊
If your in business you might try letting regular customers use your pressure washer and hand tools to remove cover and wash engine every year I been doing it for 7 years and had several new machines given to me for others to wash there’s to Small town folks really don’t abuse you much
That's a great suggestion! At this point I don't run a business. I'm just running the channel out of my garage for some fun and for others to learn something. 😃
The fact is people will not clean them even if they have a pressure washer Just lazy and don’t care about their equipment Easy to tell by the amount of engines running out of oil Then they blame everyone but themselves 😊
I feel as though it's more of an educational problem. Nobody wants to read the manual, and might not have anybody to teach them that an air cooled motor needs to be kept reasonably clean in order to disperse the heat.
Apparently this happens a lot with these Briggs engines. Im sick and tired of small gas engines and am going to look at electric. Cost of maintenance is just too high.

Pictures and labels are great for any repair work, it’s just smart to not take a chance, steps every thing is done in steps 😊
True story! 👍

Nicely done. Really just 200 hours on it? Debris looked oily. Check top crank seal I’d say. I wish these all had inspection and clean out covers.
Thanks! No leaks from seals. Still running top!

Overheating is definitely the cause for most head gasket failures. I plan on keeping mine very clean after this project.
I paint them with aluminum paint, both sides and let dry 20 minutes, then install
Have not had a comeback yet
I didn't think of painting them. I'm assuming you do this to make cleaning easier.

Theses are best bs has any more, they overhaul good and will last a long time IF you clean it and keep heat down
Yes, heat is always the enemy. Mine has been running super strong!!

Can almost GUARANTEE there were shavings from the factory when the cylinder was drilled and tapped. Big problem with the Vandguards
I didn't know that was a problem. All I knew was that my motor needed repaired. Thanks for watching.
@@AdamsWrenchTherapy it’s a big deal. John Deere has been dealing with it for a while, especially the small block twins.

Good thing you didn’t lose that 10mm 😅
I did misplace it once!
Not a real mechanic. He has a 10mm🤣
My wife bought me a socket set that is all 10 millimeters. She understands that the struggle is real.
