    This video is an explanation of not only the subtle details of Suwari Waza Ryote Dori Kokyu Ho technique, but also of the philosophical meaning behind it.     Hi, I am an Aikido practitioner in Japan. I always enjoy your videos. Thank you for your brilliant work.
    Just one thing in your explanation about Kokyuho 呼吸法, “ho” or “法” doesn’t mean “direction”. It means a method or a way of doing. It is different from the “ho” or “方” in Shihonage 四方投げ. It is confusing, ha?
    I’m sorry for my poor English. Thank you for your grate videos.

      Hi, and thank you for your comment! I'm glad to hear you like the videos.
      I am not a great speaker in Japanese and sometimes I realize, that my knowledge of Japanese terms is "second-handed" so I do my best to be careful with it, but mistakes are sometimes inevitable. I'm glad though that you've corrected the mistake, I feel this will be great knowledge to me. If you come across anything else in terms of me using Japanese words, I would really appreciate your observations.

      @Kohei Yamamoto もう既に5年も経ってますし、大した問題ではないですが最後のgrateは (暖炉などの)鉄格子(ごうし)、火床、暖炉なんでちゃちゃと直しておいた方が良いですよ。

    I'm from Brazil and here we have a fun way to learn kokyuho: we imagine holding a coconut and take it to the mouth. It works! And after class we desire a real coconut on the beach!

    Great video, thanks.
    A bit of advice - may me some metaphors will be really useful during your exercises. Not like philosophy and essential points of aikido itself, but more like, for example, "grab a ball, split it in two halfs and grab each of the half in the hands".
    Again, your video are amazing and thoughtful, it's just like how make them more perfect.

    Hi my friend. Love your channel.
    Personally, I'd recommend not leaning back in order to change up the point of resistance. It might sound like a stylistic difference at first, but it is important. Here's why: Off-balancing occurs when the head moves too far past shoulders, the shoulders past the hips, the hips past the knees, or the knees past in any of the 8 directions.
    A lot of martial artists do not know this, even practitioners of arts that require a lot of off-balancing and throwing. It is best to maintain a properly structured posture no matter what movement you are doing, with few exceptions.
    When you lean back you create an unbalanced posture - which can be exploited. Better method: apply the proper aiki hand posture, let your elbow sink down (without moving your shoulders very much), then extend upwards focusing the mind on the uke's shoulder - or however you like to play with it from there, I suppose. My main suggestion is dropping the elbow instead of leaning back so as not to give up your structure.

    very interesting and insightful, I'd never thought about it that way before.
    I wonder how many hidden esoteric meanings behind techniques O'Sensei took with him to the grave? although maybe that was the point also, to leave just enough breadcrumbs so future practitioners could discern and apply their own meanings and interpretations to the life lessons each technique has to teach us.
    Aikido really takes on a whole new dimension hidden in plain sight when viewed that way :D

      Repeating techniques without having your own meaning and purpose in what you do isn't really productive. When practicing Ai and Ki you should try to find sense in these motions yourself, too.

    We were doing this the other day. At the end of the class, we practice this technique. I have noticed the applications vary by whom I am currently doing this with. Yesterday I had one of the Dan's as my partner. It seemed he was not very interested in applying or showing how to redirect the energy when he (the opponent) was statically holding the uke's (me) hands down with as much force as they could muster. He made the comment of "if thats how I want to train" as if implying something? Since I'm new to this and munch older than most of the students, I tend to have questions and see the varying techniques in action and I would like to learn and therefore I do ask questions to help me understand. Thank you for showing me/us the answer to that question.

    Thank you for teaching for Aikido 呼吸技 Sensei! it makes me so easy understand and how to control power and keep balance in Aikido or Life. So I even never understood when I learn to Aikido in Japan. It probably Aikido needed many thinkings to closer change mind control. I thought that Sensei teaches me harmony. I agree with you.

    What about turning the hands towards each other earlier, at the moment we start breathing out. It would lock the uke's lifted hand inside, and extend the arm that dives.

    What's the goal of Zagi Kokyuho practice? If we don't know the goal, we will not get the right practice.... and we are nothing although we are the blackbelt.

    Aikido was the first martial art I trained. It's a great style but wasn't aggressive or effective for me. It's a very peaceful art but I like to kick ass lol Judo and Boxing is my thing now...

    Beautiful technique. Thank you for showing details of it. I am interested more about what lays behind the curtain that the physical appearance of things and this movement is nice example.
    On the other hand Aikido itself is not the way either. Morality applied in every day life is. Aikido may help but no exercise can replace living right. Awakening by excessive meditation, focusing on the center or any other exercise seems limited. It has to be as there is no way around morality.
    I see technique you showed as having two parts.
    First, where you use no strength at all, rather a natural exit from the situation and obtaining an advantage.
    In second part, when you already have an advantage seems you start to use your strength to lift the opponent centre up and finish the movement.
    Your videos are appreciated. Especially these which present not only physical part of Aikido but what is hidden behind, which happen to be Oneness :-)

    ps. Is it possible not to use strength through the whole movement at all and only convert the strength the opponent applied initially?

      Thanks for your remarks. I also agree that in the end what we practice anywhere, if we don't apply it to every day life, it's almost meaningless and vice versa: the real practice is in our lives and in the best case, what we do on the mat helps us do that.
      You can actually do this technique with almost no strength at all. It's more intention and connection based. I think I can make a video about that in the future. It's actually very impressive and makes a shift in persons thinking when you demonstrate it and do it in that way.
      I am intending to release more and more self-development and subtle take videos on Aikido in the near future, so stay tuned, you might like it :)

    hi sensei, but whenever i move slightly back to receive his hold in the sitting position sometime i lose balance and it is me that fall!! how do i correct this?

      afiq radzi Try lowering your center of gravity. when you receive the energy to your back, that momentum gets heavily dissipated by your base. This is a big part of having solid rooting and stance. if your center is too high up from breathing or posture, you'll lever over your center and uproot the mass under you. think on your hips.

      It's probably because you move the hands too far and then they loose connection with your center, or either you move your center too much back. The movement back is actually very small, I only emphasize it as an instruction. While you move back, also try to extend the arms forward and move just the center back so you wouldn't be moved

      the thing is, my uke kinda locked my wrist to my guts. which means i have very little to no room to shift back. i dont know.. ill try again tomorrow. theres this actually 1 guy i cant really kokyu.

      to add. im pretty much about your uke size in this video. i have a quite thick thigh which made my hara by default were always higher than my uke.

    Leaning backward is a very bad idea in general and in Koky Ho in particular. If shown this way the beginners tend to do it wrongly and it takes a lot of time later to converge to a correct technique. It is important to emphasize that the Uke energy need to be received without "collapsing yourself". In fact the energy can be received with bending of the arms but it only works if the Tori energy keeps forward direction

      I'm sorry but I don't agree with a couple of points. Collapsing is not counterproductive if you remain coherent with yourself. Collapsing your arm if supported by your center is not going to give up your techniques. for example you can do an ikkyo with arms stretched out, but one with your arm very much bent at the elbow.
      kokyuhou is done in different ways. in fact I wouldn't define a technique, but merely an exercise to learn to work with different energies. uke doesn't have to direct the energy into you. uke can pull his energy away from you, grab your wrist from the sides and have a more centered energy. grab your wrist from the bottom having a rising energy.
      remember your purpose is not knocking down uke, because all he has to do is let go of the wrist and punch you, the goal is learning how to avoid going straight into the opponent energy.

      I agree with you, I understand the intent of the backward lean to neutralize the power of uke, but this should be done in the center of your own body
      go right into the center of your opponent, neutralize the strength and go circular
      along the back of your partner

    You are not using breathing method at all. Actual breathing muscle actuate your opponent.

      Do you think training your whole life for a fight that probably will never happen is reality? Do you think training techniques which some of are 100 years old and some very static - is very realistic? Training with swords and combat sticks, traditional Japanese clothing? It's not about these things. What is real is living your every day life and doing your best to live it well and to support others in it. And if training Aikido can help with that, now that is reality.
