God Jul!
Did your parents know you were going to pick some of the hardest words you could find? Regardless, they were really good sports about it.I'd ask you to tell them I said so, but I have my doubts there's even a way to translate that.
Thanks for the vid, have a great Christmas
How is this older than the video
• Your folks seem SO sweet-‘n-precious, Darlin’!! 😊 Not to mention REALLY good sports for playing-along!! 😄 (I was just wondering how badly MY parents would butcher words in Icelandic 🇮🇸 … or Swedish 🇸🇪, or German 🇩🇪, or French 🇫🇷, or Spanish 🇪🇸, for THAT matter!! 😆🤣) Anyway, LOVE your videos 😍; THANKS so much for sharing!! 🙏🏻 Merry Christmas🎄 and Happy New Year 🥳🥂🍾 from NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA!!
⚜️💜💚💛⚜️
P.S. It’s actually spelled “astronAut,” Sweetie; no biggie. 😉
Hats off to your parents. They did WAY better pronouncing english words than I could do pronouncing literally anything icelandic, so.. haha
Yeah icelandic gets me with double ll and r i keep wanting to roll them like in spanish and french. Russian also kicks my @$$
Well yeah...it’s much easier to try and speak English than an English person trying to speak Icelandic
Icelander: these words are too strange
English speakers reading the Icelandic words: 🤨🤨
😆😂🤣
Me Knowing a bit of German and Swedish it does not sound that strange to me i pronounce the Icelandic language similar to Swedish it actually helps me understand it a bit better.
@@Halicos93 I know some Swedish too and I can definitely see some similarities between Swedish and Icelandic but Swedish just seems so much less difficult in every possible way😂
@@cmillivol98 Wel you are not wrong and have to add aswel being a Slavic person also helps me be more open minded with languages and more understanding then the Western world.
@@Halicos93 how exactly does that help with either of those things? Genuine question
Because your parents were such good sports, they deserve to see non-Icelanders try Icelandic words. But only if you find people equally cool.
I'll volunteer here. Get me on a Zoom call and I am in.
I'd be up for it. :) I love languages.
Sign me up 😂
I volunteer as tribute.
2021 DICTIONARY UPDATE:
All English words are from now meaning ‘excitement!’
When your mom suddenly said SKULL in a totally American accent! 😂💀
As a Norwegian its so strange how easily I understand the Icelandic words when I hear them and see them written (though differently than here).
I agree, I understand some of what her mother is saying.
I love how we don't often talk about how there is an island of people with the most isolated history in Europe where there's just kind of a few cities where everyone speaks the same complicated Norse branch language and it's super safe there and no one realistically ever has to learn English.
That's kind of crazy cool.
No I would say We should all learn English, Many people who work in retail in the big cities are immigrants who don't speak Icelandic, and If you would need to do anything outside of Iceland or on the internet you would be screwed.
I love how her parents are so open-minded.
If you want volunteers for a “English subscribers try to speak Icelandic” video then I’m your girl 🤣🤣 I’ll get them wrong but it looks fun af
I'd give it a shot too! I'd probably fail miserably but I'd try! 😅
Me three!
Sign me up too! ;)
"Sagittarius" is a Latin word which means "archer" or "bowman".
"Astronaut"(and not astronut) is a Greek word which means "star sailor".In the same manner the word "Cosmonaut" means "cosmic sailor".
So if we speak English and talk about the star charts and being born under a star sign, I am a lion and the other person is an archer. If we go to space then someday a star sailor might give birth to someone out their literally with the stars.
@@darrell20741 wtf
@@darrell20741 I guess...
That's russian and it's actually космонавт, pronounced like casmanavt 😁
@@Skenderbeuismyhero propably closer to casmanaFt, right? I'm learning Russian for about one and a half year and I know this word! The beautiful thing about космонавт is that it retains the F sound as the Greek pronounciation is "cosmonAftis"! Almost the same if we exclude the vowel reduction of Os to As!
I appreciate Hrafna's parents making these videos, it shows how hard it is for non English speaking people to a) know the pronounciation of the words and b) know the meaning. I'm guessing in some cases there are no direct translations between English and Icelandic. I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday, please look after each other.
It's not usual that an English word will have no direct translation in another language, the most common words do of course, but we have an absurd number of specialized terms because English pulls it's vocabulary from two primary languages and several secondary languages. A word might be French or Germanic in origin, or Celtic/Latin/Greek/Arabic/Spanish. Medical students have to take an entire class, anatomy and physiology, just to learn the words for things, while more sensible languages just call finger bones 'finger bones' and get one with the medicine, we insist on calling them 'phalanges'.
And there is also the fact that, while we say we have 5 vowels, we have like 20. That is because we will pronounce them all sorts of ways for no reason. For example, we pronounce a like a, ä æ, and so many other ways. It can be hard for foreigners to find out which way is correct, and which is wrong. It also doesn’t help that people sometimes just pronounce words different, just because they rather say it that way. But then on top of that! There are the regional differences with accents that can confuse them even more. Thank you for coming to my TED talk
@@melon7514 Yeah, I totally agree with you. I'm brazilian, in portuguese we have just one sound for each vowel, so it's so strange for us try to find the correct sound for them in english
"Why are these words so hard?" As an English-speaker, I felt that. 😂
I’m such a sucker for videos with parents, no idea why, they’re just so sweet! Merry Christmas to you and your family Hrafna ☺️
Kindergarten is a german word in english that means a school year between preschool and first grade. Prekindergarten through 12th grade. And then college after 12th
My dad still calls the TV show Breaking Bad "Baking Bread" because for some reason it's easier for him to say that... (we are not native English speakers either)
I was never that early before. Your parents are so sweet.Gleðilega hátíð Hrafna. Happy holidays to everyone. ❤
The "hard" words are the ones added from French into English. I'm sure they would do better with just the Anglo-Saxon words.
Astronaut.
já ég tók eftir þessu
gle'ileg jól :)
I would really like to thank you and your parents for doing this. Among other reasons because most of the people I've known in my life are monolingual and have no idea how difficult the English language is, because they learned it at two young of an age to remember how difficult it was to learn at the time.
Your parents are so sweet! Watching this video made me laugh and feel genuine joy

I just stumbled across your channel. You are too cute. Your parents. Adorable. I love this. ❤️
Your parents did a good job. You chose pretty tough words. You didn't make it too easy on them. 👍👍. Merry Christmas and all the very best for New Year to you and the family
That was a great video, your parents are cool. I can see that you all get along really well.
Your parents are so cool! Nice video 👍🏼
A bit late but I love your parents. Merry belated Christmas and a happy New Year to you three!
Very entertaining video from the beautiful Hrafna!
I would really love a part 3 of this 'series' or what to call it, your parents are just way too cute and trying so hard and yet they can laugh at their own mistakes and not take any offence when you laugh, which I just LOVE about them! Being able to laugh at oneself and not taking things too seriously is a really great quality that I wish more people would pocess! And given the fact that they've never learned English or been in that much contact with the language they're doing a great job! And most importantly, having fun! I love to see what a great bond you seem to have with your family! So if you can, pleeeeaaaase try to convince them to do a part 3! This is what I would call a real "feel-good-video" :)
These are great fun, takk!
Your parents are the cutest! They did such a great job.
Já já já! I don't speak Icelandic, but I had to look that up because I loved when y'all said it. 💚
Awesome! Really enjoyed the first of these videos, so it's great to see a second one!
Merry Christmas Hrafna & family! :)
This is making me want to learn Icelandic. When I was 12 I did a report in school on Iceland and have been fascinated with it ever since. Lovely language and people from what I've seen since recently coming across your channel. Keep up the good work.
That old lady's laugh 😂😂😂🧓
Merry Christmas to you and all your loved ones
Cheers from Middle East

You're parents seems like good folks and that you have a strong bond between yourselves :)
Your parents are so sweet!
Awww, was hoping I could finally be first :(
I love this idea so much 😂 your parents are adorable and are really good sports about everything. Also it's surprisingly difficult to find examples of people speaking Icelandic in an informal way like this, it's really interesting. Hope there's a part 3+ 🤞
I love these videos you do with your parents 💜
Love them and you !
They are getting very good, Merry Christmas and Happy New year to you and your beautiful family Hrafna xx
Love your Iceland videos :)
I enjoyed this so much ❤❤❤ thank you for sharing…
Just something I noticed/an observation: when you and your parents speak Icelandic I understand almost nothing of what you say, but then sometimes there's this one word or small sentence which sounds just like Dutch! A long time ago both of the languages were part of the Proto-Germanic languages (where they were more similar), but after centuries of language development, changes, and (in the case of Dutch) influences from other languages, I was pleasantly surprised about the parts of our languages that were similar and that I could understand. It makes me even more excited to one day learn more North- and West-European languages (including Icelandic), and finding other similarities between these languages :)
That’s like watching a family game night on RUclips. Your parents are so fint!
Welcome back!
I love this video!
Your parents are awesome! As someone who is an English speaker trying to learn Icelandic, this is amazing to watch :D and you can let them know, they are so much better at my language than I am with theirs!
Happy Yule :D
Makes me smile to see your parents having fun with you in participating in your RUclips video. 😄
That was fun to watch 😊 greetings from Germany and merry christmas to you and your family
