Thank you for highlighting the universal cruelty and expanse of the conflict and mentioning each of the atrocities that are left out of Canadian and American history books
"War is cruelty and you cannot refine it." - William Tecumseh Sherman. I am not trying to defend these atrocities I am just saying that this is a perfect example of why he was right. Also, I find it ironic that I am quoting someone named after Tecumseh when talking about the War of 1812. The reason why Sherman's middle was Tecumseh is because his father fought in the war and although he fought against Tecumseh he respected him.

My hometown of Havre de Grace Maryland was burnt down in the war during the British invasion of the Chesapeake. It's actually an interesting tale as our lighthouse keeper, John O'Neil an Irish immigrant was the last militiaman to flee and was imprisoned for several years until his daughter successfully secured his release.
My ancestor was a Kentucky mounted rifleman, survived the massacre of Americans at River Raisin and fought at the Battle of the Thames where Tecumseh died.

Canada wasn’t even a country then. This was between the U.S. and the U.K. You had really no part in it except that we happened to invade trrritory that would one day be given to you. Other than that, nothing.
@@alienlife7754 How does that even make sense? There is about 250 years of American history between first being settled by Europeans and gaining independence. There is thousands of years more from natives. That is still American history. Events, especially ones that came to so heavily define what Canada is today is Canadian history.
This war was an example of a rising power wanting to flex it’s muscle and an established power throwing it’s weight around. The fact that Britain could afford to send ships and troops to North America while at the same time going full tilt with Napoleon in Europe is impressive. Had they been able to focus all of their attention on us that war might have actually ended with a real winner.

That is one way to describe it. I would be the wrong way to describe it. But it is a way. UK wasn't seeking subjugation so It can't be correct. How about American Revolution 2: Electric Boogaloo?
I would say that all British goals of the war were met. Hold onto Canada while fighting Napoleon etc. Where as all of the American goals were not met. They had not taken Canada. Which was a main war goal for them. The loser was definitely the native Americans
The British wanted to prevent westward expansion and establish a firm foothold for the natives. They were able to neither take new Orleans nor establish the native American country so you're mistaken
If you really think the Brits had no territorial ambitions you are either stupid or blind to the reality of the time. Lol. The Brits had vague plans and desires for reconquest of the “Colonies” as they still called us. So no, the Brits did not achieve their goals either. @@compatriot852 The British goals of the war was to hold on to control of Canada, and limit American expansion Northward. The American goal was to expand Northwards and occupy all of BNA. The fact that Canada is a country today is proof that the British succeeded.
@@compatriot852 What are you even talking about? Britain did not lose land. What Britain wanted was to defend Canada and it did so against a numerically superior American force on multiple occasions. The trade embargos were lifted days before the War but the news hadn't travelled. When it did get received to save embarrassment the secondary objective of the press ganging was put forward, partly because the American government at the time were afraid of the repercussions from the British if they pulled out at the time. Press ganging was not included in the Treaty of Ghent so in essence, America achieved none of it's stated objectives. Press ganging came to a natural end when Napoleon was defeated. The US wiping out the native opposition to their expansion was not the intended aim. I mean if it was, why did they bother invading Canada? Seems like a strange way to expand West by getting trounced invading North.
T'was originally proposed, the right to life, liberty and acquiring property where the proper three. But, founders knew this includes people as "property" so it was changed from "acquiring property" to "pursuit of happiness" as it was suggested that this new phrase includes property pursuit... But, 50 to 60 years later, the inability to completely settle the issue of slavery forced a civil war. Therefore, in some sense, the civil war was actually over property rights, or the clear definition of what exactly could BE "property".. Some say, the whole confusion not only resulted in needing to abolish something as obviously wrong as slavery, but also managed to make a mess of other areas of property rights... That's a much, much longer story though.
Fun fact: At the Battle of Thames in 1813 during this war, the Americans charged the British, and the British Army threw down their weapons, ran away and fled the battlefield, leaving their allies on the field alone, to get slaughtered by the Americans...

1812 would have been a British victory had they not counter invaded the US, but they did, and they were also unsuccessful. Hence the war was a draw. Any time Brits brag about burning the White House, just remind them about the Battle of New Orleans
Don’t forget for Britain it was a sideshow their best general was in Spain beating Napoleons marshals. @Colonel Martinez bro they didn’t care about that, defending Canada and burning the White House was good enough for them. Sure They would have exploited more vicotires if they could, but no one thought they were about to reverse 1776. The armies were too small. Plus US declared war not Britain, so it was defensive and conservative, not expansive, minded for brits. But not to say we wouldn’t have tried to exploit more victories if they happened Literally their best general didn’t even fight in the war of 1812 because he was busy with the more formidable threat of Napoleon’s marshals in the Spanish war
Above statement is why I reject opinions it was British attempt to reestablish colonial rule. There may have been some British generals who fantasized after early success that they could regain colonies for His Majesty. In reality, British were tired of war after fighting Napoleon for so long.
@@stephenkammerling9479 …. During the War of Independence the British Army could garrison coastal cities. Hold them secured indefinitely. But those made up only 10% of the 13 colonies. Once the British left any area it was insecure. There wasn’t and would never be a big enough army of occupation to hold the 13 colonies to Britain. After the war cross Atlantic trade between the former colonies and England thrived. The British Empire being a trade empire still had American business trading.
You know, if you read the entire Star Spangled Banner (all 4 stanzas, not just the 1 we sing as our National Anthem) you realize that it is a very racist song/discriminates against several groups of people in violent manners, yet we sing it all the time as a pro-America song. Now, I'm not saying that we need to get rid of the National Anthem (since the 1st stanza is the least racist of them), but remember that the (overall) message of it and the flag is that we are all equal Americans citizens, and both it and the flag are a symbol of freedom for everyone. Context is important. During the War of 1812 (to early 1815), we were fighting against the British whom got runaway slaves to fight with them against Americans (in exchange for freedom), at the time we were also killing Native tribes and even tried (but failed) to invade Canada at 1 point, and Francis Scott Key himself was a slave owner/described "freemen" as just Caucasian males and no one else. Some of this is what he wrote in the lyrics while some of it is implied based on who he is/the situation he was in at the time of the war.
Britain is a tiny little salty island on the other side of the Atlantic, with a king (Charles) who has no morals, with a son (William) with even less morals.

If your saying that Canada and Britain won the War of 1812, then your wrong because nobody won. Just because, Canada burned down the White House doesn't mean that they won the war. The war reached a STALEMATE and both sides (America and Britain, including Canada) made peace and likely.... became allies again? Anyway, nobody won the War of 1812 because of a simple fair stalemate but you can kind of also say that America won the War of 1812 since America did more efficiently and in today's terms, America could beat the two nations (Britain and Canada) any day. Lots of people joke about Canada sending its "moose cavalry" but even if moose (deers) are actually stronger than eagles (birds), eagles can literally swoop down and try to get the deer's weak spots. The national animal of the United Kingdom (the lion) is stronger than the eagle but can do the same thing, they are both carnivores while a eagle might prefer fresh fish but a lion definitely meat. So, yeah nobody won the War of 1812. Also can we just take the time to say that the Internet is completely wrong about the wars, that America lost? like the Korean War, which people say that America lost when nobody won. South Korea's allies didn't win and North Korea's allies didn't win. No side won. It was a STALEMATE. Also, if people are gonna criticize me about "stalemate" then a stalemate is "A situation in which further action or progress by opposing or competing parties seems impossible". Or in the chess definition. "A position counting as a draw, in which a player is not in check but cannot move except into check". The "chess" definition kind of makes sense since what i have been saying that America, Britain, and Canada reached a smooth standstill or a stalemate, so finally, NEITHER SIDE WON THE WAR OF 1812 :)
Great story of the war of 1812 , BUT the story of BALTOMORE MD. has more to it and was more important then you tell , you forgot this : While the battle ultimately was a British victory for Canada, it had several key other effects .Not like the men in Bladensburg WHO RAN AWAY. DUNDALD , MD slowed British land forces' advance on Baltimore, had a great impact on American morale, and resulted in a large number of British casualties including the death of their commander, Major General Robert Ross taking out by a young man , and that's what held up the britts for the men on HAMPSTEAD HILL to set up and held out and sent the britts back to there ships in NORTHPOINT. so they stop them from entering the city , MAYBE YOU SHOULD TALK A LITTLE MORE ABOUT BALTIMORE. after all Baltimore and Washington may still been in the britts hand's and like New Orleans , who knows if the britts would have giving it back.. P.S The pic you show of the guns in Balto. are of Federal Hill witch was the last hope if the britts got PASSED Fort McHenry. so as you can see Baltimore was ready and waiting for the britts and didn't fail The UNITED STATES

Man every major United States conflict really did start with someone fucking with our Boats.
This War (like all Wars) was very unfortunate, and I hate it that it was against Britain and Canada... Love you guys!
A reasonably balanced account.

Canada-won
United States-won
Indians-lost
England-....Let's talk about Waterloo.
"There were no winners, but the Natives have lost."
Basically the whole conflict in one sentence.
My hometown of Havre de Grace Maryland was burnt down in the war during the British invasion of the Chesapeake. An infamous time in the history of both British-American relations and Canadian-American relations... the War of 1812
As a Canadian, knowing the Americans anthem is about us & UK is always nice.
@Shelby Sigouin Americans burnt Toronto down and "Canadian" soldiers chose to flee rather than fight.

This war was an example of a rising power wanting to flex it’s muscle and an established power throwing it’s weight around. The fact that Britain could afford to send ships and troops to North America while at the same time going full tilt with Napoleon in Europe is impressive.

The War of 1812 had two effects. It confirmed Americans would not rejoin the British Empire. It created a Canadian identity.
Britain’s aim wasn’t to recolonise the states but to defend Canada territory
@Colonel Martinez bro they didn’t care about that, defending Canada and burning the White House was good enough for them.
Sure They would have exploited more vicotires if they could, but no one thought they were about to reverse 1776. The armies were too small. Literally their best general didn’t even fight in the war of 1812 because he was busy with the more formidable threat of Napoleon’s marshals in the Spanish war
@@archivesoffantasy5560 After 1783 peace treaty the British had enough of dealing with Americans.
When was this war again I kinda forgot
You seem to forget the natives were also killing our civilians, why do you think we fought the creek war?

We (The USA) really needs to dump The Star Spangled Banner as our national anthem. “America The Beautiful” would make a much better national anthem.

* Main reason for War of 1812--- Brit's could not allow the original 13th amendment t stand. It was obfuscated in "Fog of War" and the ratification that had transpired PRE war 1812 was never reengaged after war..
Jist of this amendment Paraphrased---
"No Esquire or anyone with attachment to a Nobel may hold public office in this country...
Esquire=Lawyer from the B.A.R. association
BIG BIG reasons this war of 1812 was hidden in/from standard public schooling...
It is not an education ya get in those buildings--- You get schooled and taught... NOT educated.
@skghistory - You do realize that we are discussing the War of 1812, right? Canada didn’t even form a government until >>>1867
@@thegreypath1777 yea but you Get it sorry i meant to say britain Im gonna Edit it
If your saying that Canada and Britain won the War of 1812, then your wrong because nobody won.
''If your saying that Canada and Britain won the war of 1812' you'd be suprised on how many people are brainwashed into thinking that
To this today, I still believe that Canada should be apart of our union. It is a shame that there is a giant gap between Alaska and the mainland.
Theres a reason why Canada isn’t apart of the usa
Well, you failed to conquer us twice. So no, it should not be part of the states.
As an American, I do not want them. They would completely tip the political scale.
Nah, I like Canada and the US being separate countries as an American. The two are best of friends
@@JDP2104 I hate Canadians
US could have gone when they conquered Canada... *MURICA! F YEAH!*
