  • A reliable non-contact voltage tester is a useful piece of kit to quickly check if a circuit is live or a fuse is blown. The quality and functions of a voltage stick tester vary with price and brand. We check out the new Wiha Volt Detector to see if we'd replace our current model in our collection of electrician tools.
    The Wiha volt detector is available in 2 versions.
    An entry-level model - with on/off switch plus indicator and a red LED to indicate a circuit is live.
    Step up to the "Ghia" version and you get
    - Torch function
    - Autopower off
    - Bar graph indication of voltage level
    - An audible buzzer
    Both versions are IP67 rated and are supplied with 2 AAA batteries.

    I was kind of off to the idea of them and then I got one and use it once or twice, then I found out it can detect Miss wired Outlets where the three light tester cannot easily tell polarity for lack of a better word. the hot sticks can determine if the wire is on the correct side of the outlet. Very handy to know before plugging in expensive AV Equipment. I only discovered this fact after I lot of reading and I feel like I'm one of the few people who know it, I'm in the US and I'm kind of liking that it has a flashlight on it mine doesn't it also takes those stupid watch batteries.
    It will also say I picked up a stick multimeter that had one built in it reduced my carry down to two objects for troubleshooting and checking. I carry the voltmeter Checker and I carry a homemade 3 light Outlet tester with built-in voltmeter. So testing is pretty darn quick plug in get light / volt test and and then check that the hot pin is actually connected to the hot wire.

    I have used since I can remember a voltage tester screw driver, so yeah, it had a metal tip, a resistor, a lamp and ultimately my finger. It was not very good at tightening screws so it broke into pieces too small to be glued back again. Bought a non contact tester and the false positives makes it useless sometimes, I picks up very small parasitic voltages as well so it can only prove when my whole hose is dead not only one circuit.

    I would say one thing these pens are great for fault finding in appliances and household items, especially like Christmas lights when a bulb goes out and all the lights go out these will tell you which bulb it is, same as them thermal slash microwave testing screwdrivers are helpful in automotive work when working on spark plugs or coils just by holding it above the coil to see which cylinders misfiring obviously from there you have to work out whether it's the spark plug or the coil lead which isn't difficult

    Joe why do you want neon screwdrivers taken out of circulation? Do believe they are dangerous?.
    From about the 1950s what did we have for testing? .
    Answer, we had nothing more than a crank operated continuity/ insulation resistance tester from mega and a neon screwdriver and if we were lucky enough we had a BM6 battery operated mega.
    Now we have fancy two pole voltage indicators and all bells and whistle’s MFTs the crank operated mega and neon screwdriver is now dangerous?
    Isn’t it true that the big manufacturers have forced the IET to draw up new regulations for testing so they can market and sell there new testers?
    Because before theses MFTs come on the market testing was nothing more than continuity test insulation resistance test and polarity test
    What is now referred to as Ze was given by the DNO and ZS was calculated RCDs were not common in domestic installations so we would never test them .
    I would very much like to hear your thoughts on this .
    I have had a neon screwdriver since I was 15 years old I was given it by my brother , and I have never ever had an electric shock from using it nor have I ever electrocuted myself wile using it .
    JW did a video on neon screwdrivers saying how dangerous they are so my question is why in gods name would someone like JW who has many many years of experience and knowledge demonstrate how they work and put his finger on the end of it to show how it lights up knowing that he could potentially kill him self?
    Your opinion will be much appreciated.
    Have a fantastic Christmas and new year.Hope to see more from team eFixx in 2022
    I think this is a great topic for eFixx to delve deeper into, it was brought up in a conversation by a friend in my local club and thought if anyone can give a definitive answer you guys can .👍

      Good question Sean. They simply don't comply with GS 38 for testing live parts, there's more than 4mm exposed tip on the end and the device relies on you completing the circuit to prove it's live. All that's standing between you and oblivion is a resistor, if that fails for any reason you're toast! I'm glad you never had one fail on you, but just because we've always done something one way doesn't mean there's no better/safer ways of doing it.
      As to the IET and the splendid John Ward, their actions remain beyond the remit or control of this humble mortal, you'll have to ask them! 😉😀

    • @Dog-whisperer7494
      @Dog-whisperer7494 2 года назад

      @@efixx thank for your reply, yes I agree with you on the point that there is more than 4mm of exposed metal tip , and yes there is always a better way of doing things. My point is if they are dangerous?? Then why would someone like JW with years of experience and knowledge take such a risk? The fact that he did and i’am pretty sure he isn’t dead is proof that the crapy neon screwdriver is safe . The proof is in the demonstration . And not just JW there are about five videos from different people on the same topic and claiming they they are dangerous? Yet the all gives a demonstration of how the thing works, also I just thought it would be something you could delve into and maybe dispel the miffs or prove the miffs , I just think it’s an interesting one
      Again thank you for your kind reply 👍👍❤️

    • @Dog-whisperer7494
      @Dog-whisperer7494 2 года назад +1

      @@efixx joe I have to agree with you about there being more than mm exposed tip on the neon screwdrivers , but when you take into account the fact that you can remove the covers off of our voltage indicators when we can’t get into a terminal with them on then we are no longer conforming to GS38, so therefore GS38 is a nonsense? Also if you put a length of heat shrink on the shaft of your neon screwdriver so you have less than 4mm of tip showing then it will conform to GS38? . Also the resister is behind the neon ie metal shaft neon resister spring end cap , so if any fails it will be the neon there braking the circuit. Just a thought

    Fault finding under water? What if your call out to a job where the underwater lights in the swimming pool have failed and you need to know if power is getting to those lights ? My non contact voltage stick has two sensitivity ranges low 12v to 500v and high 48v to 1000v and detection distance of 2inc on low and 4.5 on high so even with completely sealed underwater lights fittings it will detect live voltage.
