i was in a swarm like that. like a million zooming fast. beautiful. yes, you can swim with. they are cool. will always run before popping you. sharks are cool too. never bother me. it's the jellies.
They are cownose rays. They are docile and won't bother you. They can sting, but they swim along the surface so it's highly unlikely that they will be stepped on and provoked to sting. The southern and Atlantic stingrays that we also have around Panama City like to bury themselves in the sand and do get stepped on occasionally. That's why you do the "stingrays shuffle" and drag your feet when walking in the water. That way there's less chance of stepping on one. Usually all it takes takes is a slight bump and they will take off.
@8dylandog Palazzo Condos on the west end of Front Beach Road. My neighbor owns one of them and rents them at very reasonable rates. We've stayed there several times and love it.
@Thefrenchandtoast Because they think they're yummy! Most species of sharks have a certain prey that they follow around most of the time. For bull sharks it's sting rays, hammerheads follow the tarpon and white sharks find seals irresistable.
Hi there! I am working for German Free TV and we would love to show your clip on television. Would you be interested in that? I can send you more information via mail if you like. Cheers!
Was just there and saw quite a few. They would come up and swim around your ankles. Really cool.
Wow, and we got excited this morning when we saw one from our balcony in Panama City Beach!

I live here and these are NOT stingrays - they are harmless cow rays. They do not have stingers.
Unfortunately, when you see sting rays one can bet that the bull sharks won't be too far behind.
Or Skates.... See them a LOT in Orange Beach/Gulf Shores area.... Good call tho.
Kinda fun to swim with in fact
