    I enjoy these work truck videos. Not everyone wants bluetooth, sound systems, leather interior, and spending $60,000 for a truck. I bought a used 2015 Ram 3500 4x4 Tradesman with the manual window cranks. I absolutely love the simplicity of this truck.

      Ram Runner It was maxed out for it's configuration... It wasn't a regular cab. This isn't the first time they've done this test. They did it last year with the exact same weight and the 6.0 was as usual ragged on and was faster than the ram.

    • @Ramcharger18
      @Ramcharger18 7 лет назад +4

      Mat A it's still not pulling anywhere near the weight dude don't make excuses! The downfall of the 6.4 hemi is the power robbing 6 speed trans that it's has. Hopefully doge puts the 8 speed in this truck because mark my words it would be a game changer. That 6.4 hemi is one bad ass engine. I have 4.56 gears in mine and it's a total animal. I have nothing against Chevys and use to live the 6.0 but it in no way can compete with this truck!

    • @matthebest018
      @matthebest018 7 лет назад +6

      Ram Runner In no way am I making excuses, I'm simply stating facts here.. Go look at the video from last year. And BTW it's a bit hypocritical of you to say that the issue whit the 6.4l is "the power robbing 6 speed" yet you say I'm making excuses 😉 I don't have anything against Ram either but people should stop taking feelings as facts. At the end what matters is the real world result.

    Very interesting that the Chevy 2500 6.0 was 2+ minutes faster on the same number of gears, 50 fewer HP, and 49 fewer TQ. Either the 6.0 is really dialed in, or its power is underrated. I'd give up the 1/10th worse MPGs for that. Ram should really have its transmission dialed in more, and what's ironic is that everyone complains about the Chevy 2500 and how it's geared. Yet here we have a 6-speed auto attached to an engine with more power and torque, and after the longest IKE hike time I've ever seen on this channel, everyone rags on the transmission.
    Clearly GM has their rig setup properly if they got a smaller engine with less power to flat out smoke (relatively speaking) a newer engine and platform that is technically more capable. I've honestly never seen a time gap that big. A gap of 5-45 seconds is really nothing. But a time gap of multiple minutes could be a reason someone chooses one truck or the other, especially buyers that use these things to tow or payload something from place to place on a time schedule.

    • @777jones

      was the chevy pulling 21,000 lb combined weight too?

    • @SurelyYewJest
      @SurelyYewJest 7 лет назад +2

      No. Where did you read that this Ram was? Because no gas-powered Ram can tow more than 14-15k. That trailer with the Ford on it is maximum 11,900 as shown in the video, with 2500 of water in the bed. That's nowhere near 21k lbs.

    • @Magnum74
      @Magnum74 7 лет назад

      777jones, both trucks had near identical combined weights. They were loaded differently because of the configurations but the total weights of each truck were comparable.

      SurelyYewJest The GM 6.0L V8 is an absolute tank/ workhorse. I had the early LQ4 version and loved it, ran the hell out of it and it kept on going. They continue to use it because it continues to perform and as of now it's still comparable to anything else on the market as far as 3/4 and 1ton gas powered truck go so GM has no incentive to improve. So with it being around for 17 years now, it is dialed, and the newer transmissions and more technology they use with it also help it.

    Ok so you are putting the work trucks to the test on the super Ike gauntlet which is great, but I see a problem when comparing this dodge to the chevy. You use a dodge 4x2 single cab and it's max load off the bumper, where as the chevy work truck is a 4x4 double cab and a goose neck. Don't seam much of a comparison test to me. One we know a 4x2 can most times haul and pull more then most 4x4's. then the bumper to goose neck will also be different in their restrictions. The question is if your comparing, why are the trucks different in those areas and why are they not pulling similar set ups, meaning both bumpers or both goose necks?

    Thanks TFL,
    I've been waiting to see this for two years. I used to have a 2014 RAM 1500 but ran into payload issue, so then I upgraded to the 2500 and felt the weight difference. I was wondering if the truck can even actually haul 12k pound but it looks like it can. I'm even happier than ever that I got the 6.4L as the gas-saving wouldn't pull through until I made 200k with the 6.4l.

  • @treverbennett8142
    @treverbennett8142 7 лет назад +1

    I had one of these, a 2014 2500 4WD CC with the 6.4L. The transmission is the issue, it was designed for the power curves of the Cummins and KILLS this motor's potential. Throw a robust ZF 8 Speed behind it and I'd bet you'd have a great puller.

    • @supremeirohnic
      @supremeirohnic 7 лет назад

      Figured it had to be something along those lines. The 6.4 is a strong motor but once it dropped down from 2nd gear it was done. The 1-2 gear spread is something you'd expect from a 4 speed auto. Then limiting itself to under 4500 rpm probably to keep valve temps safe (those have gotta be big valves) it showed that weakness in all its sorry glory. Hopefully the engineers at FCA take note.

      Yup same transmission on gas HD RAM 6.4L and 5.7L. 5.7 Ram 1500 6 speed is just a lighter variant which is why the 8 speed was such a large improvement for RAM. It was essentially going from a 5 speed to 8.

    • @JsGarage
      @JsGarage 7 лет назад +1

      Yea I mean they are both excellent trucks just realize that the extra power available in the Ram HD gas engines is lost due to unfortunate trans gear spacing. This isn't to say that the truck as a whole is inferior, just that it would be better complimented with a better geared 6 speed or hopefully more gears in the near future. Both GM and RAM are very comparable I would get whichever based on things that you want in a truck. I personally get 4x4 trucks and feel that HD trucks should come with solid front axles this makes me lean Ford or Ram for HD. Just my two cents. Good luck on your shopping.

    Priced in the low 30's? $36,xxxx with tax is a $40,000 truck. Plus factor in interest on the financing and any other crap the dealer tacks on "rust proof, vin etched glass, bed cover, etc". My 2013 Ram 1500 Hemi was rated to tow 9,200 lbs with the 3.55 gears and 6-speed. I towed the shit out of that truck pulling a 30 ft boat (6600 dry weight, plus fuel and gear on a double axle trailer) in the mountains in Utah. I would run most steep hills in 2nd gear or 1st gear if I had to lose speed behind semi trucks on the highway. Kept my eye on the trans temp gauge. It got decent mileage doing it too. Better than 2.3 mpg. I wanted 4.56 gears though to help get weight moving on hills. I also had helper bags in the rear as these coil springs suck for towing in my opinion. Nice ride but not heavy duty like leafs.

    You guys should test the 5.7 hemi along side the 6.4 hemi up the Ike gauntlet that would be a good mash up along with the 6.2 ford and the 6.0 Chevy. I know everyone likes seeing the biggest gas engines but I'm very interested in knowing how the 5.7 heavy duty would do.

    I'd like to see the Nissan Titan XD S base model in the gas version. That truck prices out to just over 28,000 on cars direct, so its CHEAP !

      You can determine that the new Titan is a failure in just one model year huh?
      Seems legit.

    • @lucasalamo7888
      @lucasalamo7888 7 лет назад +2

      You can't call something a failure because a new generation has issues you dimwitted turd.
      If we go by your logic then the 2014 /Silverados and Sierras were spontaneously combusting due to GMs poor wiring. The real fail from Nissan was their bait and switch tactic by claiming this generation's pricing was going to be on par with the previous gen but we all know they blatantly lied about it.

    • @lucasalamo7888
      @lucasalamo7888 7 лет назад +2

      Whining about the Titan XD simply shows how big of an idiot you really are and proves my point that pickup truck fanboys are a special breed of stupid. Allow me to point out s couple of things and although will partially line up with your rhetoric it doesn't prove anything you say. And for the record I have driven and owned almost al truck brands and configurations from half ton to 1 ton.
      Titan XD is NOT a 3/4 ton truck, everyone and their mom has said it and comparing it to one is stupid. Consumer ignorance along with Nissan's low blow on early adopters have been factors on poor sales. If you want any real complaints about the truck is the lack of standard equipment ESPECIALLY on higher trims (No sunroof/moonroof on Platinum Reserve trims, really??) and inconsistency on payload capacity between the diesel and gas models.
      The XD is not (and probably never will) something that will transcend the Heavy Duty crowd but it's a truck that will tow loads over 9,000 pounds with confidence due to it's heavy duty frame. Remember just because half-ton trucks say you can tow 12,000 pounds doesn't mean you should on a daily basis..

    • @robgrune3284
      @robgrune3284 7 лет назад

      @Alamo. true, the XD is 1/2T truck that can be pushed on occasion beyond "normal" without breaking down. the Cummins with Aisin is a strong offering. but its own limits are its downfall. such as a fuel hungry engine and a small fuel tank, resulting in very short range. the diesel version is too pricey, and has no exhaust brake. the truck is advertised to be more useful than others, but its limits make it less so. the only real pro is the zero gravity seats. imho, it is simply an over-hyped, over-priced 1/2T truck. no wonder its sales are very low. Nissan's management should be fired for wasting the company over this truck.

    I liked that you were showing drivetrain temperatures on the downhill portion of the test. Would it be possible to give oil, transmission, and coolant temperatures (for the vehicles that display it) on the up hill portion? I think those readings would be valuable data points. Some vehicles (like the Ram) are obviously overheating.

    I know this video is a few years old now.....but I'm wanting to find out at what point are you stressing the truck too much with a large load/tow. If the tow capacity is say 9000lbs, would it easily tow up to that limit or at 7500-8000 is it it starting to stress the truck a lot? I'm looking to get a truck that may need to tow upwards of 10,000lbs and just don't know if an F-150 or Ram 1500 will be enough, or should I just get an F-250 or 2500 that can tow 13-14k, etc?

For a truck that's at a local dealer for just under 30k!! A landscaper or excavation company would find a truck like this very useful!

I understand your guys standard tests but maybe some variety in tests that don't apply to gold hitch award persay would get way more views than a basic review and more interest and practicality than max payload
