      William Hugelmeyer How are you liking it? I know you don't buy this for mpg, but what's it averaging? I'm planning on ordering one in the next month or two.

    • @williamhugelmeyer2702
      @williamhugelmeyer2702 7 лет назад +6

      I average around 11-12 around town on a long two lane I can get 17-18 at 50-55 mph. It goes into 4 cyl mode. You have to play with the pedal but you can hear the difference when it's 4 cyl. I was a little disappointed in the power at first but now I have 9000 miles on it and the power is getting stronger everyday. The premium shell platinum 0-40 synthetic Ram requires for the 6.4 is so good, it's preventing it from breaking in. 4 wheeler mag said 13,000 miles is the magic number. Fit and finish is awesome, no problems to report, everything works as it should! If I had to complain about anything, it would be the ECM tuning. Ram has the timing pulled way back so weasel piss gas has no difference in power and mileage compared to super premium gas. Sometimes it up shifts really fast jumps into 4 cyl mode and then up shifts again making the rpm drop below 1200. Then it jumps back into 8 cyl mode killing any mileage. My advice, don't get the lifetime warrantee and take that money and spend it on an aftermarket ECM, exhaust, air cleaner. You will have a 450hp beast! I think I may cancel my lifetime and do it but I'm a hotrodder. Last truck was an03 SS Silverado with the LQ 9 , 6.0 liter AWD. RAM gave me a price I couldn't refuse and I am happy. This is coming from a diehard GM guy!!! Good luck!

      Oh, I forgot highway mileage 13 if you like pushing 80-90 and its ECM limited at 101, 14-15 if you drive the speed limit like normal people

    • @FourWheeler575
      @FourWheeler575 7 лет назад +1

      William Hugelmeyer Thanks for the feedback! I think I'm sold. Do you do any towing with it? I plan on towing a half ton towable toy hauler in the future. One of those should be good for the payload this is set up with. I'm glad they did this review though. It helped me get over the payload limit. I want an awesome truck that's capable of at least 9k. My 2013 Ram 1500 Crew is only rated for 6400, so I want to upgrade it. We love the outdoors, so that's why we want one of these. Right now I'll be pulling a tandem axle with a Teryx 4. I probably won't even notice it. Lol

    • @FourWheeler575
      @FourWheeler575 7 лет назад

      William Hugelmeyer Also, my mileage in town isn't a whole lot better. 12-14. On the highway I can get 18-20 if the wind isn't blowing which is rare here. Normally I get 16-17.

    The downhill braking is due to the tow haul feature that creates engine breaking as soon as you take your foot off the gas. It also increases rpm between shifts and runs higher rpms overall. An awesome feature.

    Two questions
    1) how did you come up with 6mpg baseline?
    B) what if a truck does better then that? Still a maximum of 25points in that category?
    Bonus question, if you were to test the Tesla model X how would you score based on watts per mile?

    Wasn't the 2014 6.4L Ram 2500's run up the Ike Gauntlet pulling much more than 9,000lbs(Nathan and Mr. Truck made a mistake)to get a time of 11min 52 sec? It was really towing 12,000lbs plus 500lbs in the bed. 3,500lbs could definitely explain the difference between these two trucks.

  • @bigskyguy1611
    @bigskyguy1611 8 лет назад +3

    I've owned two of these power wagons. a 2012 and a 2016. Yeah they are great trucks to be sure. The 2012 outfitted with non-MDS 5.7 and 4:56 was far, far better than the 2016 with 6.4 MDS and 4:10 gears. But what I absolutely hate, hate, hate, about these trucks (and its a pretty small thing) is the manual shifting toggle switch on the gear selector leaver. You can't see it and you can't feel it when you need it. Especially in a high stress/ panic situation when you need to drop gears quickly. It's very easy to miss the switch entirely or shift up instead of down by accident. I've written RAM a few times over it but they don't care. In my opinion, not being able to manually run through gears quickly and easily makes it a shitty tow vehicle.

    Why did the Ram 2500 with the 6.4 liter do so badly compared to this power wagon? I would have thought that the times would be the same or close? The 2500 got 11:50 and the power wagon got 8 minutes? Different gearing? Obviously tires are different... They both had the 4.10 gears in the rear end, so transfer case and automatic gears must be the difference? I think I have found my new truck thanks to this test. This is impressive, thanks TFL!

No mountains to pull up but still fairly hilly. Current setup is 1.5 lift, 35 inch toyos, 4.88 gears, air bags, and I use 91 shell with no ethanol. I averaged 8.7 MPG towing the load as well with an average speed of 37 MPH.

    Power wagon is a towing machine

  • @nicholasalbrecht9357
    @nicholasalbrecht9357 6 лет назад

    I am unclear about why the payload capacity effects towing capacity. Aren't those two different things? The trailer's payload capacity and truck's towing capacity are what matter I would think, why does the truck's payload capacity matter? I have never towed before so there is a lot I don't know, but that is one I can't seem to figure out. Anyone who can explain that to me and satisfy my curiosity, I would appreciate it!
    Also TFL, I really respect admitting to a mistake and fixing it, that's a good business model! Wish more people did that.

    • @andrewd7795
      @andrewd7795 6 лет назад

      Because you should have 10-15% tongue weight, which for a 10,000 lb trailer 10% would be 1,000 lbs. That number subtracts from your payload capacity, and then when you have 2 200+ pound men in the cab you are overweight.

    • @BreckoniousMaximus
      @BreckoniousMaximus 5 лет назад

      One way to add payload capacity to the Power Wagon is to put some 10ply tires on and HD shocks or a thicker leaf spring similar to the 3500 RAM. This should make it similar to a standard RAM HD with the Hemi.

      Sound peaks with bumps and stretched out at the dash, it picks up for engine noise. At the location of the rider, ~73dB is probably more accurate.

    why do you think the 2016 power wagon did so much better than the 2014 blue 2500, which was crawling up the hill at 25 MPH?!

    • @Nobody75-330
      @Nobody75-330 7 лет назад

      Wilson Fan blue truck was pulling 3500lbs more. power wagon was only pulling 9000lbs with nothing in the bed. blue truck had 12000lbs on the bumper and 500 in the bed. both had 4.10's

    Why are y'all using the same benchmarks for the rating among mid-size, half-ton, 3/4-ton, and one-ton? You can't compare the a Tacoma to a 3500 (or anything in between). The bigger trucks with the heavier loads are always going to be thirstier and slower up the hill. I'd recommend different parameters for each class.

    • @ToAstYNaChO
      @ToAstYNaChO 8 лет назад +1

      +Aaron Fink They pull loads appropriate to the ratings. So the strain should be almost equal for each vehicle

    My dear friends at TFL,
    Please forgive the sanctimonious, holier-than-thou clap trap being spouted by the over inflated blowhards who masquerade as your fans. Us true believers just shrug our shoulders, keep shtum, and carry on watching the best goddamned motor show there is. Perfection is God's jurisdiction, the rest of us just get along the best we can.

    Gas has more payload than diesel so how can it tow more????????????? or is that just marketing for the more expensive diesel engine which weighs twice what a 6.4 weighs

  • @dakrt82

    It really doesn't have all that much more power than the 5.7 hemi

    • @handz87
      @handz87 7 лет назад +1

      James Thompson the 5.7 has more tq to the ground in the 5.7 version power wagon motors due to the 4.56 gears. The 6.4 only comes in 4.10 gears so power to the ground is less. Sounds weird but it's physics.

      My 08 PW with 4:56 is a torque monster. I think their new idea of 4:10's is to increase fuel mileage on the highway. Best truck I've owned and I've had a few.

      handz87 Yeah I put 4.88's into my 2018 PW last week, what a difference it made. Makes my buddies 2012 PW feel like a V6.

      If I'm not mistaken, FCA detuned the hell out of it. The 6.4 in Challengers and Chargers makes 485 torque, 475 horsepower. Not for sure though.

  • @cs6160

    the 456 gears in them is sure nice

    • @handz87
      @handz87 8 лет назад +1

      4.56 gears stopped after 2012 they all have 4.10 now. The 2012 with the 5.7 makes for tq due to the 4.56 gears. Would love to see a 2012 power wagon vs a 2016 now that's real world. It would be a bad day for the 6.4.

    Yes the Power Wagon is a great truck. But for the money? If your towing? No! I'd spend my money on a Ram 2500, Ext Cab, diesel with the Off Road package on a Laramie model with the beautiful leather interior! Then I would get a nice big aftermarket front bumper and winch, with a matching rear bumper! Then call it my new truck! But to use a Power Wagon for heavy towing? Nah.

      K. R. V. Right & wrong
      Depends if you plan on towing 10,000 or more.
      At a cost of almost $10,000 more for diesel engine
      You pretty much can
      Drive the gas engine free for the life of the
      truck. Or about 200,000 miles with the extra cost and maintenance .
      Notice the big 3 are in
      All out war for HP & TQ
      For diesel engines.
      Limiting the MPG's
      Also in some cases diesel gas has been 50 cents gallon higher in the last 10 years. Most
      People don't even tow
      20% of the time you would have to connect a trailer 73 times. All trucks are superior
      Than 15 years ago.
      Sure you can afford it
      Go for it but do really need it. If you keep the diesel long enough you
      Will make up the extra cost at resale however
      Most likely cost more
      Driving if diesel gas continues to go up and
      Matenance.

      K. R. V. Depends what you're towing, when I go into the Bush and pull logs out, I couldn't imagine how bad it would be with a 2500 diesel.

    • @amolinari9
      @amolinari9 5 лет назад

      Yes it comes down to money for sure. I love diesels especially the Cummins but I simply can’t justify the money spent to daily drive one and have my off-road hobby which requires maintenance regularly due to breaking components. With a PW you rarely break anything can tow “enough” and look the best doing it at an “affordable” rate

    if the truck can to go faster than the speed limit you should go faster. because if two different trucks could do the speed limit up the hill the entire way you would have almost exactly the same time and i don't think thats a good way to test the trucks.
