    I just wish it was longer, closer to minutes.

    Ya’ll ever thought about doing an Ike run with a Ram with a Manual transmission?

    These torque, horsepower, and price numbers are reaching 18-wheeler territory.
    Makes me wonder at what point you say "Screwit I'm just getting a Peterbilt and a step deck instead."

      exactly. Can get a decent used big rig for the price of these trucks and have a sleeper attached.

      Well if you got the garage or driveway to fit it in, can still take your family on vacation and your Wife theoretically can drive it than Yes peterbuilt might make dollars sense. A Semi is much more costly in maintenance, MPG is horrendous compared to these trucks and which parking garage could you ever fit in?

      +Micah Watts I drive truck for a living and I see these things all the time in the fuel islands. I'm always wondering how much sense it makes compared to the traditional setup.
      And you're not correct about the fuel economy. It's about the same.

      +dchawk81 You really need to think outside the box bro. You're probably a bit bias to your Tractor? Guys who need these trucks use it for its intended purpose but know they don't need to pull anything heavier, they want the creature comforts at that price, when unladen they can pull up to practically anywhere a regular car would go, it'll fit in there driveway and not stirrup the neighbors with a Tractor. There are so many good reasons to own these trucks to perform up to there towing limits. Did I mention you have a Bed to use for Payload? Unladen, these trucks would be better on Fuel

    I think we should give a thumbs up to all of these pickups 29 years ago I drove my first class 8 truck with a Cummins engine in it a Ford it only had 210 hp about 1500 lbs of torque but it would haul 80,000 lbs gross point being these pickups have came a long way hauling 30,000 lbs up the ike that's amazing to me the ford and Dodge both do exactly what the manufacturer says they can do it doesn't matter how fast they can do it they both do it and do it well 30,000 lbs with a pickup come on people that's amazing especially if you remember the first diesel pickups I just prefer the Cummins because it a well proven power plant for many many years

    First, I LOVE your Chanel! Second, I liked the fact that you used the manual shift option in this video for this truck, will we see more of this for the Duramax and the Powerstroke? And lastly, will we get to see you do the Super IKE with a truck that has an actual manual transmission just to compare mpg with an automatic?... I know it may not be fair for the competition since Ram is the only HD diesel with a manual transmission but I think it could be fun to watch. ✌🏽️

  • @johng4527

    good video. I like that you where shifting manually and doing everything you could to get the speed up. Because that is what an owner would be doing. It's just like when you take a car to the drag-strip; you try all sorts of things until you get the best time. you don't just put it in D and let traction control AC etc, all on and wait for a green light.

    Thank you for the cabin noise check I would like to have seen that with the Ford F450 and thank you for stopping the clock at the same time as your test on the F450. I would like to see comparisons of the Ford, Ram and GM heavy duty line ups with the same gear ratio's, while I am partial to Ford I know the F450 had 4:30 gears compared to the Ram's 4:10 and even though the Ford F450 uses the same engine/transmission as the F350 it really isn't the same truck so the comparison between the Ford and Ram isn't an exact comparison.
    Thank you for your reviews, they are some of the best around!

    I drove a 2016 f250 srw with the diesel engine, it was a top of the line model. I liked it. I then drove a 2016 dodge 2500 srw with the diesel engine, it was base model. I don't know if they had anything to do with it, and I don't remember the gearing in either truck. However, the dodge felt extremely sluggish. Both trucks were brand new (as in like 10 miles on both of them). So, driving impressions only I'd go with the ford.

    I really like that you guys don't interject with your opinions on these tests, so that said, please make separate videos that interview both of you guys on your opinions on the brands latest models (Ford, Dodge, GM) and come up with a rating system that gives everyone an idea of who leads the pack. For instance, in technologically it appears Ford is far and away the leader in the truck segments which makes sense as they pour the most into R&D for their truck lines since it makes them the most money per product (the margins on their truck sales are far greater than any other vehicle they sell so the F-series is their "golden goose" as some would say). I won't go into the details but for starters, 7 cameras, LED quad headlights, LED spotlights on both mirrors, load-flat cargo floors, dual moonroofs, tailgate step and handle, electric running boards, adaptive cruise control that works with trailer break controller, etc etc. Not everyone has the time or resources to investigate to the detail that you do and thus, your opinion means more than mine. You will help keep the truck brands competition alive, there is nobody out there that judiciously and diplomatically rates their performance and innovation each year and we all know there is a big gap between truck brands and what kind of technology you get (along with performance, luxury, but keep out reliability as it's a new truck and too tough to speculate). Ram is stepping it up in the last 4-5 years in terms of luxury and GM has one hell of an exterior but their interior has always been an afterthought, as is technology (they are always late to the game with tech, look at their head units, small compared to Ford and Ram's 8"+ displays and have such an aging GUI). There is obviously far too much to discuss here but it's just how it is.

  • @CumminsDriver
    @CumminsDriver 8 лет назад +7

    Im really not sure why the manual mode was used when its not used on the other test that they were trying to directly compare to this one. You can watch the speedo drop almost a full 5mph when he knocks it down from 3rd to 2nd. It was running right about 2100rpm in 3rd which is the sweet spot for a cummins. The manual mode is good for holding gears when you are anticipating a hill or letting off and accelerating a lot and not wanting it hunting for gears, but typically the transmission is tuned for maximum performance at wide open throttle. If you down gear it too early, you are simply in the maximum RPM range where defueling is starting to occur and there is no room for improvement without allowing it to upgear again(which wont happen in manual 2nd), so you've effectively neutered it.

    TFL:
    (1) The GEAR+ GEAR- buttons on the steering wheel are NOT manual shift buttons. They merely set the max gear allowed to be used by the truck. There is no real manual shifter on this truck (I do own a '15 RAM 1500 Laramie).
    (2) There is a great future you guys should use and demonstrate: When you set the speed limit on cruise control, RAM trucks do down-shift and use engine compression to do their best to stay within that limit. My truck always stays within 5 MPH of the limit set at cruise control, even when towing my car at 6% downgrade! If you want it to strictly stay within, say, 60 MPH, you could then set cruise control to 55MPH and try. Since using this feature, I never use my brakes on downhills anymore.

    True Ike Guantlet Leader Board is needed. Right now we are limited by what Dealers will send, and when TFL crew has time to perform such test. The current Ike Gauntlet Leader Board is very limed on data points. You should open this up to your user base, and users would bring their own truck and run it under whatever standards you have defined(maybe you guys do a ride along with the user for official verification purposes). I would go even further and even incentive it with some TFL swag. I know you would get a huge turn out, have grip load of new video content, and instead of just couple trucks that I can sort on your current Leader Board I could possible compare hundreds or even thousands of trucks on it. User then would be able to compare and make decisions like, should I buy a 2008 Ram 6.7 with delete kit and EFI live or just plunk down the cash for a 2017 Ram.
    Let me know if you would like any help flush out the details, or implementing this.

    Hello guys! Hey Andre I’m not sure about MrTruck, but there’s and old truck driver rule for driving down hill back in the day of weaker brakes and engines, that said go down the hill on one gear lower than you went up! Now I would never count on those two orange straps to secure the two blue barrels of water in the event of an accident! That is around 1,000 lbs! I would have put them on the rear or between the bigger water containers.

    Everyone touts the increased fuel efficiency of diesel when towing but TFL took the RAM 2500 with the 6.4 HEMI and 4.10 rear end up the Ike and it got 2.8 mpg. Granted it was towing around 12.5 k but also finished a little faster too. The gassers sure are closing that gap.

    In reality towing with GCWs over 26k lbs is for a complete different group of drivers. TFL should probably run any towing test that GCW is over 26k as a test of what driver and truck can do since most CDL drivers are more likely to use whatever techniques they can. Rigs under 26k stays as what the factory programming can do as many of those drivers may never have pulled a trailer with enough weight to effect the truck before or do so rarely.

    ok mr truck...higher rpm is not going to be easier on the transmission, in fact its harder, more horsepower, higher rpm puts more stress on the bearings due to higher heat and the engine burns more fuel and therefore produces more heat...and if you really want to break it just keep shifting at full throttle (thats how i blew the auto trans in my old f350) and the trans shop told me to let off the throttle some between gears, and i was like "oh-live and learn"

      On an automatic you are not supposed to let off the gas even if you are manually shifting it.

    • @philtripe
      @philtripe 8 лет назад

      you are right steven, you dont "have" to let off but it adds extra stress and just like a bicycle its going to be a lot easier to shift if you lift off a little bit...i dont know how much you drive a manual but i have nearly 300k on my original clutch in my truck. and its more important to let off at the right time than it is to use the clutch...when you shift under full power with an auto all the hp goes into the clutch pack and that heats up big time

    • @stevenvanheel3932
      @stevenvanheel3932 8 лет назад

      +phil tripe lift off a little is much different then lifting off all the way. If you lift off all the way and try to upshift, it will just stay in the gear it is in and engine brake and slow you way down. That really had to stress it out. And think about it: When was the last time you put your automatic in drive and let off the gas when it was about to change gears? It is no different when you change gears manually then when it automatically does it for you, except you decide when it changes gears. A manual is totally different. The point of letting off the gas is to allow the motor to slow down to help match up to the rpm that the next gear you shift into to prevent putting a ton of pressure on the clutch disks.

    On the dyno ram puts out the most torque compared to the new 6.6 duramax and 6.7 powerstroke. Still pretty badass! These rams are tough trucks, I like ford and dodge not too much chevy at all, I like the old OBS 7.3 powerstrokes, obviously Crew cabs and I love the new dodges, I have the 2010 ram 1500 5.7 with 4x4 a lift 4 inch, and 35s it sure is amazing!

    why do you do 3/4 and 1ton SRW trailer hitch pulls no 5th wheels. i enjoy your videos very much but its pretty much duallys towing max loads. i dont tow 5 th wheel nor 3ok lbs. i tow anywhere between 10k to 16k lbs with my SRW 1 ton truck. i feel like it would be more realistic like this vs max loads all the time. in my opinion if i tow max loads all the time it would put tremendous wear and tear on my truck and i would be putting it in the shop more often or trading my truck in more often and i dont know if its just me but i think thats crazy. but anyway love your videos and keep up the good work.

      Then they arent doin so safely and being reckless and can endanger peoples lives. Goin over the rated tow rating can be bad for both engine and transmission. And also can cause a lot of sway. Some half tons can tow 10,000 lbs if they have the max tow package on them

    Ask yourself this. What kind of engines do semis use. That would be inline 6s not v8s. So which engine is a inline 6 the Cummins. That same engine is also installed in medium duty trucks such as freightliner and international not v8 diesels.

      The one thing I didn't like about what Mr. Truck and Smirf did was they three off the whole balance of the testing. How can you accurately compare the next test if you've intervened with the manufactures shift strategy. Real World I get it, For Test Comparison +mrtruck and +tfltruck was a bad idea. Roman probably wouldn't have allowed this. Start over!!!

    • @adrianglessner5979
      @adrianglessner5979 8 лет назад +4

      Seriously scratching my head trying to see where your coming from here....First you refer to a "gas engine" in a diesel eng. post as a reference. (I digress) Turning more rpm transmission pumps more fluid, high rpm = heat! At a point you will overwhelm your cooling system with the transmission fluid being soo hot, you will not effectively be cooling trans fluid. Especially in this case where you were FULL throttle with a MASSIVE load. FCA has a big issue with the 3.0 Echo diesels overheating in situations somewhat similar to this. They are trying to get soo many MPG out of these motors they come out with the 8/9 speed transmissions. Well your towing with these 3.0 your going up a hill like you did with BIG C it unlock the torque converter, drops 3 or 4 gears... now you have high rpm, tcc unlocked=HOT! The cooling system can't handle this heat so it starts bumping up the coolant temp higher and higher to the point to the vech goes into "limp in" mode = not going anywhere. This is all because the motor dose not the the necessary gusto/ torque to pull the load without having to drop soo many gears, unlock tcc. SO turning that many rpms is not necessarily less heat. IMO. Thanks to those who took the time to read my rant.

    • @AB-coyote
      @AB-coyote 8 лет назад +7

      Not how it works. Dropping gears most definitely lowers temps just like Mr. Truck said as well as pumping more trans fluid.

    • @adrianglessner5979
      @adrianglessner5979 8 лет назад +2

      Dropping gears will reduce the gear ratio. In turn will creat more heat. I wish there was someone with some actual industry insight to the mechanical side of this that could weigh in their "theory" on this.
      Sounds good man. Working for FCA for 10 years being a master Transmission tech at the dealership I work at gives me no extra knowledge of how these things work. So yeah

    • @lilsammywasapunkrock
      @lilsammywasapunkrock 8 лет назад

      +Adrian Glessner higher rpms do generally cool things down more. in the older styled torque converter transmissions, anytime you were under the torque converter stall speed, the torque converter would slip and heat up quite a bit more.
      on the newer style transmissions, I have no clue. however, on a radiator cooled transmission cooler such as all ford automatics used to have, more flow/higher speeds = more cooling in less time. not sure if this is still the case, but it would make sense to me.
