    It would be nice if at the end of these videos you showed a score board that shows the past score from the other trucks you've run so we can easily see how they all stack up.

    Still think the 87 down here in AZ in the summer is tougher. 6-7% grade, with HEAT. Brings a lot of trucks to their knees. It would be interesting to see how well that Ford (err all of them for that matter) would do down here when you start out at 110+ degrees and top out at Mt. Ord at 90+ in August. I know my stupid DuraMaxipad would go into self preservation limp mode every time pulling my toy hauler (which was well within the tow weight specs of the truck). Same thing going up to Flag on the 17.

    • @johnathanyinger

      True, but most of the trucks aren't available to them during the summer.

      TFL I would like to see this test please! I think Don has it on the head heat is a bigger deal than anything else when towing lets see if these trucks can get rid of 300-400 hp of heat when its 100+

    Ford has the sport mode feature too which is actually recommended for mountain towing. it would have helped with the grade shifting. they could have locked out the top gears as well, or manually selected gears going uphill or downhill. the truck is built with many many tools to help your towing experience.

      +Juan Suarez I agree with the performance and seeing such low RPMs but then I fail to see the benefit as the fuel economy was a pitiful score when the Titan gets a mpg of around 3 as well.

    • @JsGarage
      @JsGarage 7 лет назад +2

      I would rather have the power. That's just my preference though.

    • @nd4spd325

      @Juan Suarez although a lot of NA trucks are high rpm trying to breathe... even at 3700rpm that ecoboost is doing the same. But all under high boost. Its still breathing hard. Just stressed at a lower rpm. It is pretty cool watching these videos though.

    The problem with the gear hunting isn't the shift shock you feel, it's the torture on the trans every time it shifts.

  • @anthonyc1883
    @anthonyc1883 7 лет назад +20

    Slightly disappointed that there was little or no discussion, until after the timed run ended at 9:05, about the engine performance. It took until that point for us to hear "Anyplace on that hill, with this 10-speed and the power, I could accelerate." I suppose if the truck were struggling it would have been a more obvious issue (tach revved out, speed dropping, etc.) but with that brand-new and still controversial Ecoboost technology I was eager for at least a couple comments as the guys were blasting up the hill. Minor quibble, but still.

    Good job Ford, but I'd only buy the V-8 for durability reasons. As I mentioned last year, a 30-30-30-10 scoring system would render scores that would more closely match the traditional ABCDF system of grading. With your system, people are like wait, the winning truck got a C-? Brake down the subjective into 5 areas worth 0-2 points each or ten areas worth 0-1 point each. There's too much subjective weighting. It's more about the numbers that you are gathering. And, at the end go over those 5 or 10 areas and give us the breakdown on what those scores were. When I hear what score did you give it, and there's an "ahhhh, well, ahhhh", I can sense the hand reaching into ones posterior and pulling a number out. Sit down and work out individual areas to score and add them up on camera.

      The V8 hasn’t proven to be more reliable...in fact if anything it’s been less...while it makes a lot of high rpm horsepower,it is pretty weak towing,has no torque below 4000 rpm,and struggles in a loaded f150. This V6 is an absolute monster,pulls like a diesel ....I know I bought one...it pulls as least good as my old truck an LB7 Duramax diesel .. in the uphill,once he was up to speed he never went above 3500 rpm and most times was at or under 3000 and he has pedal and power left at all times. The V 8 has to run at 5-6000 flat footed to do this run...and it’s wound and giving all its got...I love the Coyote....in a Mustang or a lighter F150 that doesn’t tow a lot...leave the heavy work for this little monster v6...

    How about a emergency brake test distance where you brake to a complete stop from 55mph on dry, level ground fully loaded? How does the rig feel? Is there any squirreliness or tendency to "jack knife"? This should test the sway control in each truck.

    TFL, please try using cruise control. Most people tow with cruise control activated. I know in the past you've stated why you don't use it, but let's try to isolate the TRUCK'S performance and eliminate driver input. Maybe do a run with cruise control activated and then a full manual run with downshifting and upshifting controlled by the driver for comparison. What does the manufactuer recommend?

      Doesn't almost every manufacture recommend not using CC on hills?

  • @maddog8148
    @maddog8148 7 лет назад +1

    I believe you expectation of the transmission downshifting going down the hill is not realistic and you see a trend that all the trucks you test do the same thing. I do believe that transmissions do this for reason and all the automakers have done this for reason to use the brakes more than using a transmission to lower your speed. I believe you should look into this more and revamp your testing.

    Wait, barring the snow and ice that may be on the roads, wouldn't summer be the most difficult time for this test since the warmer air would thin out the already thin air thus reducing power further and making it harder on the trucks?

    • @xt6wagon
      @xt6wagon 7 лет назад +2

      I agree, my 2004 F150 had 0 issues with longer stopping while towing because of pad fade, even towing heavier than was exactly legal. Modern trucks use over sized brakes and "race" style pads that don't fade till they are literally on the edge of being on fire. The ABS controler deals with it by reducing the pressures when unloaded so the oversized brakes don't cause issues. So much so you can tell how much a F150 owner tows and hauls by how much longer the rear brakes last than the front. Tow a ton, rear brakes go away at the same rate, do no towing or hauling, they last about 2x as long as the front.

    • @mecheng1993

    • @RobertKohut
      @RobertKohut 7 лет назад

      I think in some challenges the trucks cannot maintain the 60 mph so the time then decides the "winner". Many of these tests the trucks accelerator is to the floor all the way up.

    • @clintmullins4406
      @clintmullins4406 7 лет назад

      They limit to 60 mph because some of the trucks can exceed the speed limit by a significant amount.

      if they were using there noggins theyd take a vehicle with no trailer up that hill at exactly 60 the whole way to see what the perfect time is. knowing some biases i think it will show if someone was going over 60 or what ever.

    I've been towing for 8 years with a Nissan Titan. I'm always cycling between 3rd and 4th manually depending on grade. Why go down a steep hill in the highest gear and negatively grading it based on your number of brake applications? On steep grades I drop into 3rd, engine runs up to ~ 3,500 rpm and stays there with no brakes, unless it's really steep. I don't get why you score it this way. I mean really, who runs a trailer downhill in high gear mashing the brakes? Well, maybe an auto repair technician looking for business or a big rig driver with a death wish...

    • @nathanmcdonald610
      @nathanmcdonald610 7 лет назад +1

      A manual transmission will probably never happen again in the F-150's. Hell they don't even put them in Super Dutys anymore. As far as I know the only U.S Ford's that you can still get a manual transmission in is the Mustang, Focus and maybe Fiesta, and I'd be willing to wager it's days are numbered in those vehicles as well. I grew up in 80's and 90's when manual transmissions were more predominant, but now a days it seems like people want convenience over interaction when it comes to vehicles. And as far as the diesel F-150 goes, I wouldn't hold my breath for it to be a performance monster. I think it'll likely make numbers in the neighborhood of the Ecodiesel Ram's. At the end of the day diesel 1/2 ton trucks are less about towing capacity and more about boosting government EPA ratings. The Ecoboost (and most gas V8's for the matter) will absolutely shit on the Ecodiesel in both loaded and unloaded performance. The only real advantage to buying a 1/2 ton diesel is that you can get about the same MPG as your average large family sedan out of a full size Pickup. Other than that its not worth it in my opinion. More expensive to buy, More Expensive to maintain, less performance. But to each their own.

    I agree with others that a better /tougher test would be on a steep stretch of grade in the middle of summer. Reason why because the motor is producing lots of heat but kept in check by the cold temps , where in the summer temps in a hot climate only the trucks cooling system is keeping things in check. This is where I believe where the playing field will really be leveled out. Right now on these tests the forced induction is giving the ford always the advantage, but in the mid summer forced induction produces lots of heat and can loose power.

    Video quality is Excellent! What camera are you using?
    I was watching the RPM on way up and it was between 3000-3500 rpm max. Appeared to not go below 5th gear. Watching some of the other trucks turning 4-6000+ rpm on same hill and its quite obvious which is the better tow vehicle.
    To really show the towing capability how about doing a WOT 0-60 mph Test run with the 9000 lb trailer? I also noticed even though the '17 Ford was capable of going much much faster at times it was under 60 mph! Why? I do watch all your video's but some of the testing is . . . Questionable

    interesting watching you guys doing proper ' real world ' tow testing.
    I damaged 2 good engines !?
    I learnt the hard way ,when towing heavy loads uphill , to never shut the engines down imeditly after a hard uphill tow ,
    ( I use to pull into a filling station at the top of a winding 3800 ft hard uphill climb towing 7000lbs/ 3500kg boats,
    While filling up ,I could hear the engines boiling inside !!!
    Busted a Audi V6 2.8 in a 2004 Q7 and a 2002 range rover 4.6 v8 while filling up at the top of the long climbe towing).
    I'm just wondering if these new generation machines suffer any 'boil over ' when shutting them down after a hard uphill/mountain tow ?

    • @mecheng1993
      @mecheng1993 7 лет назад +3

      This could only really be fixed if they have an electric water pump, oil pump, and trans pump as well as a cooling fan that all stay on after the truck is shut off. No manufacturer cares enough to do that because it's understood that you shouldn't beat the piss out of an engine and then just shut it off. It's hard for that heat to transfer out of the engine block when coolant and oil aren't circulating. The oil will more than likely coke up in the turbo(s) too.

    • @henryperity9412
      @henryperity9412 7 лет назад +1

      John maybe the manufacturer's should programme the engine ecu's to nurse the engine = not shut down until cooling thresholds reached and notify driver what's the ecu is doing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @fishrrelaxing9361
    @fishrrelaxing9361 7 лет назад

    I'd like to see the exact same test ran wo the max tow package using the std rear end. It looks like ford needs a flash to tell the trans to hold gear longer. It appeared that the final drive was slightly off with the new rear gearing and was putting the truck just under optimum rpm for each gear where I believe the standard rear end it would drop one more gear and sit perfectly at 3500 or so instead of upshifting. I'm thinking this had a lot to due with the down hill brake applications being so many as well. In all honesty though.. who buys a $65k 1/2 ton for towing lol. Who wouldn't opt for the 3/4 and a diesel for the same price?

    • @FoDaddy
      @FoDaddy 3 года назад

      Versus the coyote, it does *slightly* better in terms of MPG unloaded, but it's not by much, about 1 MPG overall. Towing it actually is less fuel efficient than the V8 (again not by a huge margin), but it's towing performance is superior as the 3.5L EB has a significant torque advantage.

    • @kingdaniel3519

  • @armonefoulon3674
    @armonefoulon3674 2 года назад

    Great videos but you should read the user manuals prior to testing... if you double tap the brakes and it will grade shift... the programing from the factory does not try to slow you down on the hills, it is optimized for fuel efficiency. You guys have been doing this for years and should know that the Torque-Shift transmission has always had the double tap to down shift. I have seen videos where you guys are surprised when it downshifts... that is because you tapped the brakes twice. In fact if you double tap the brakes again it will downshift again... crazy what you can find out when you read the user manual. Also you deduct points for squat... they trucks are setup to squat when loaded, that is why there is a rake to the stock truck... deducting for that is like deducting for fuel mileage when the truck will haul the trailer up the mountain faster than all of the competitors but it you slowed down to the other trucks limits the fuel milage would increase... I would rather have one with more power that I could regulate for fuel mileage than one that does not have enough power and gets better fuel mileage.

    I agree with others, you should use the truck's designed features as intended. On downhill, be in trailer mode with the special cruise feature, Also, I hope you were not beginning the decent in one of the over drives! No reasonable person would actually do that. The 10 speed "drive" is #7 or maybe #8 IIRC. But now that this segment is done, your comparisons may not be fair.

    I understand they don't want to exceed speed limits on film for legal and liability reasons, but what is the point of every truck running 60 mph while not flooring it only to go 8 minutes plus or minus 10 secs? There is no comparability, it's all subjective.
    I understand you want to keep the weight the same for all trucks in a category for comparison's sake, so you are constrained by the truck with the lowest towing capacity. But the weights need to go up so these 1/2 tons are straining more. If you don't want to exceed the gvcwr of the less competent trucks, then you should go back to the Ike Extreme where each truck is maxed out to its specific individual rating.
