      While the mpgs are less, I bet the stress on the trans and engine is reduced. Choosing better gears, less shifting, less lugging the engine at high load and low rpm. Probably makes up for the different in mpg with less overall wear-and-tear.

      The stock ecoboost didn't seem to have any trouble holding 60. So the tuned uphill probably wasn't going to be a big difference. Since your benchmark is 60mph in the Ike, I wish you would have brought the trailer to the strip. It would be interesting to see the difference in times when pulling.

      Jay P This truck is already class leading in towing power , hands down especially at altitude .... it is overpowered for towing stock ... my 17 3.5 is an animal pulls harder than all my diesel pickups exc my twin turbod 24V Cummins ,

      John DiMartino well that’s what I’m saying is the truck is already the benchmark here and doesn’t struggle to keep speed so there is no time decrease with a tune. I had a 15 eco boost and that truck pulled great as well. These trucks respond great to tunes especially performance tunes for unloaded fun!

      So here's a super late but practical answer for why you might opt for one over a V8.
      I don't have experience with trucks on the ike and beyond up past Breck and Vail but I did with my old car. It was a turbocharged Ford focus ST rated 252hp-270ish tq. I drove it on this exact road several times. Raced with/played with a mustang GT 5.0 going up this pass and our cars were almost dead even in speed. At sea level, it would be bus lengths.
      The air was so thin and the incline was so steep that in cruise control the turbo was making boost on my 2.0L Ecoboost which isn't normal at the bottom.

      Pretty sure the stock tune/computer would force an upshift once it hits the red line or would keep you from downshifting into the red line in the first place, unlike the aftermarket tune they demonstrate here. At least that's how all auto transmissions I've driven in the past decade or so have worked (won't let you red line it at all or for long while shifting manually).

    • @Treyk901
      @Treyk901 6 лет назад

      sugonmaballs no. The stock tune doesn’t get anywhere redline and won’t let you get close to it. Typical shifts are like 700 rpm short of redline. Keeping a gas engine near redline isn’t going to hurt it so long it stays cool. 5 Star still keeps all the nannies in tact. The clip you are referring to is still below the actual redline of the engine. You can’t always go by the tac. I mean look at the 5.0 f150 and see how far those engines can rev before redline. It’s beyond what the tac reads.

Not only were they receptive but very apologetic, had a different technician help me with issue and then followed up with an email and apologetic gift certificate for future purchases. Pretty good .... I think people are missing the point of how Ford mapped its truck’s computer & 5-Star’s tune to it.
    Ford did a great job & the only room for modest improvement was engine braking, tune dropped the gears & didn’t let engine/ transmission overheat. Good Job
    Most people would get a tune for play vs work modes. Sacrifice mpg for more power

      I own ecoboost trucks, oz only tunes for 5.0's. Honestly the whole variable octane is a little bit gimmicky to me considering the truck's computer does that from the factory, also you will never get the power you can get fom a full-on dedicated octane tune.
      With that being said I have a couple of really good friends that have ran Oz on their 5.0's which I have driven quite a bit, they liked them, seemed good to me too. I still prefer 5 star though, I have a lot of friends with 5.0's running 5 star

    I have been told, since I was a new driver, let the engine do the braking. I started off in a manual transmission and would let the engine scream, within limits, to slow the vehicle down when going downhill. I have never understood why it is better to put that extreme stress on the engine, as done here, just to keep from pushing the brake pedal a few times. Brake pads are cheap and easy to replace. I can't imagine what it would cost to do repairs or replace the engine in this truck. Is my logic unsound? I would love to understand better what I have been told for years.

    • @Motomadman43
      @Motomadman43 6 лет назад +4

      I suppose if you are using your brakes the whole way down and they are hot it would be much harder to stop in a true emergency compared to engine braking and using the brakes on the same emergency stop. Aside from that brakes also warp. Not that the rotors cant be replaced...

    • @jasonharrison25
      @jasonharrison25 6 лет назад +2

      Because the engine is not burning any fuel or under any significant load while engine braking. It is just being an air pump which is not very hard on the engine. Brakes can overheat on long downgrades and then you can get into trouble. Use the engine to provide as much as it can and apply the brakes when you get above your safe mph. When slow enough you release the brakes so they can cool off. All while the engine is doing its braking function

    • @NukePooch1
      @NukePooch1 6 лет назад

      Both @Jason Harrison and @Motomadman are correct. It doesn't cause much harm to an engine to engine brake a vehicle down a hill. What does cause harm is when your brakes overheat and fail and you drive off the cliff. Normal braking systems will only give full braking power a couple times before they lose performance (until they're allowed to cool). Brake pads might be cheap, but an out-of-control vehicle with burned out brakes hurtling down the side of a mountain will ruin anyone's day.

    I don't think the dual injection does anything for performance. It's there to reduce carbon build up on the intake valves, what direct injection cannot do. I think that's the only benefit. Could be wrong though.

    • @sdvten
      @sdvten 5 лет назад

      You are not wrong. Quite frankly I am amazed how the vast majority of the auto industry screwed up on initial gas direct injected engines and did not add the extra injectors in the "traditional" location from the start. They either were too incompetent to figure it out during the R&D process or decided to hose the consumer to save the money on extra injectors. I don't know which is worse.

    Anyone saying tunes are bad for your truck is full of it. Probably never even used a programmer. Practically all my friends and myself have a tuned truck. No issues have arisen due to the tune and many people don't realize you need a tune to delete the emission on a diesel truck. And those emissions are terrible for the truck so tuning it makes a world of difference. I have a f150 and have the 5 star tunes. The economy tune has made my f150 with a 6inch lift and 35" tires get up to 17 on the highway. No tune I get 10 OR 11. These tunes also help me tow my gooseneck and adjust for larger tires. The only way these tunes will ruin in your engine is if you run a really high horsepower tune and beat on your truck all the time.

    • @michaeldierks3708
      @michaeldierks3708 6 лет назад +1

      Colton Dieringer I think you kind of hit the nail on the head there. The reason tuners tend to get a bad name is because so many people who use them hot rod their vehicles around which obviously will break them more often. I’m speaking in generalities of course.

  • @stevendensmore7653
    @stevendensmore7653 6 лет назад +1

    First of all a turbo vehicle responds better to a tune. I guarantee you that if they had held it to the mat it would have been a drastic difference. I have a 17 3.5 EcoBoost 4x4 supercrew and back when all I had was a tune, it would bust the tires loose in second gear makes a huge difference. Now I have built the motor aftermarket turbos intercooler and meth injection. Makes close to 600rwhp lifted with 20x12s. Surprises every Corvette owner I come across. Anyway for those who don't think a tune is worth it drive one and you'll change your mind. I guarantee that.

    So, better MPG stock, same time going up with stock but better downhill (with the engine screaming). Of course, more power overall with tuning...but more hassles from Ford/dealers while under warranty if they know you're 'tuned' and you have a warranty claim. I know that technically Ford shouldn't give you any trouble, but just read the discussion forums for the Ecoboost F150 and you'll see that many people do have dealer issues when tuned under warranty. I think I'll keep mine out of warranty F150 stock since it runs great as is (and I can't really take off any quicker anyway since it's already difficult to keep the wheels from spinning when you stomp the pedal). Best use for the tuner would be to disable the auto start/stop 'feature' ;-)

      Hooked on Photography going to burn more fuel to make power... this was not a good example the fuel economy to be gained from tuning. I picked up 1mpg with Black Bear performance tunes in my Silverado, and they were able to turn off 4cyl mode. Also with the ability to flash the stock tunes back on, the dealers can’t tell it’s been tuned. But in my opinion the best thing the timers can do is improve the drive ability and transmission tuning.

    I’m always quick to admit when I don’t know something, and eager to learn. I don’t have the same experience with trucks and towing as most who are probably watching this video, but it seems to me like the tune wasn’t worth it, especially when going up hill. It was less efficient overall and the time difference was negligible.
    But it’s the downhill test I’m curious to understand. Are less brake applications ideal because the brakes wear out significantly faster when towing down grade? 1/2 the number of applications certainly sounds good, if you’re looking at a couple hundred brake applications per pad/rotor under this kind of load. But if it’s just to optimize the transmission doing engine braking instead of conventional brakes then I don’t quite understand the need for the tune once again.
    More power going up didn’t seem to help with time either, I was expecting maybe the 0-60mi time would be decreased enough to shave a bit of time off the uphill. Either way, I’m hoping to understand this better so I can get a better idea of the purpose of this type of tune and test.

    • @therealjohnsmith4811
      @therealjohnsmith4811 6 лет назад +6

      Just my opinion on the braking - Its a made up statistic. Unless one would do this as a matter of habit because of a business, hobby, etc it really doesn't matter. The trucks can be manually downshifted to achieve the same thing the reprogramming did with the auto programming. That still doesn't really mean much either. None of the trucks brakes failed and trailers (of any significant weight capacity) have brakes as well. Its more a matter of convenience. They still stick to the speed limit, so the time is really moot as to a real show of performance. More power, generally, means burning more fuel. You can get tunes that increase mpg, power, shift points, etc. It really depends what you are after as far as performance. There are always tradeoffs.

      When headed downhill with a heavy load, it's ideal to let the engine brake (hold back) the vehicle. This way, if/when you do need to stop, you have cool brakes and have a better chance of stopping on a hill. If you have to use your brakes constantly downhill, they will build up a lot of heat and eventually fail. If you do need to stop, you won't be able to. I do agree with @ The Real John Smith in that the trucks can be downshifted. TFL agrees and has said before (IIRC) that's how they normally would drive, but they're testing the truck's ability to downshift automatically when needed.

      Understood, Trey. In TFL's defense, in order to do those loaded braking and acceleration tests safely and accurately, they would need a minimum of 1/2 mile of straight, level, smooth road closed to other traffic. Knowing them, I'm sure they have considered it and looked but it's probably pretty hard to find. Care to comment, TFL?

      Collin because a Company isn’t going to warranty engines/ parts/ trucks that they don’t manufacture, simple as that. Along with a tuner can’t/ won’t warranty a truck/ engine that you can install a tune on at any mileage, and any amount of engine wear. so you could have a guy put a tune with his engine that is junk and on the way out, then blame the tuner after he tunes it and the guy blows it up simply because it was already hurt and would have blown anyways. If people were having problems with tunes you’d be hearing about it on RUclips and on forums. Plus if you have an issue you revert to stock tunes and take it to the dealer and they take care of it. But if you’re not comfortable with it, don’t do it. All my vehicles have had tunes, one of my trucks supercharged and never blown one up, along with numerous of my friends and family tuning their vehicles as well and not one problem. It just isn’t a problem.

    This video shows that in order to compare fuel economy while towing, the truck needs to do the same amount of work compared to the comparison truck. If a truck tows the ike in 10 minutes it has done much less work than the truck that did it in 8 minutes. EcoBoost towing at the time of the slower truck would be a great test of efficiency guys!

      iVlogBuzz I think people give far too much credit to the “learning” /adaptive transmissions. With a tune the changes made go much farther than what the transmission could ever learn to do on its own. They really only adjust for the smoothness of the shift, not power and drive ability. They still shift at inappropriate times, hunt for gears, and don’t hold a gear/ engine brake without a tune.

    I think this is same with any 2017 and up F150, but my 2018 Raptor Super Cab can do maxed towing long downhill runs without me touching the brakes and maintaining its speed. That is, if I am using cruise control. It puts the brakes on via a programmed routine all by it self. Then again, my Raptor is not rated for as much payload or combined load as the one you tested. In the real world, I think most trailering drivers would opt for the cruise on that road down hill as a means to control speed. Since you did not gain any real performance other than your 0 to 60 time and since you lost some efficiency; I vote for no modification to the stock tune.
