Not only are you picking up on the message of this song much faster than I did when I first heard it, but I REALLY want to commend you for the praise and appreciation you showed in your comments toward your parents! That is truly great to see from a young man your age! “Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise), that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life on the earth.” (Ephesians 6:2-3)

Religion has nothing to do with honouring your parents.

    • @rgmann
      @rgmann 3 месяца назад

@@geofftottenperthcoys9944 Absolutely correct! God's commandment to “honor your father and mother” (Exodus 20:12; Deuteronomy 5:16; Ephesians 6:1-3) applies to *all* of mankind (as *every* command of God does), regardless of whether someone believes or rejects it as true. “Now we know that whatever [God’s] law says, it says to those who are under the law, that *every mouth* may be stopped, and *all the world* may become guilty before God” (Romans 3:19). No one’s religion or lack thereof will get them off the hook for failing to honor their parents or for disobeying any of God’s other commands. “Therefore, by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin” (Romans 3:20). Thankfully, God has provided a remedy - full pardon of sins and justification in His sight - for *all* who accept the gospel message as true, which is “the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16).
“But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.” (Romans 3:21-26)

I've watched a couple of your videos now; Time grabbed my eye first. But this, this reaction - you are truly an exceptional young man with a good understanding of the world around you. So impressive, I love your dive into the lyrics, you really got this song - how a Mother's love can become something not wonderful if we're not careful and instead of soothing it can become smothering. Kudos to you, you just got another subscriber!

I personally feel this song goes back to Syd Barrett. He was one of the founding members of Pink Floyd but he had a mental breakdown in 1967-1968 and was forced to leave the band, his friend David Gilmour took his place. Syd tried resurrecting his music career doing a couple of solo albums both produced by David Gilmour and Roger Waters of Pink Floyd but his solo career never really took off. He ended up quitting music and going to live with his mom till she died, and he lived alone, looked after by his sister until he died in 2006 from complications of Diabetes. Check out some of the stuff from Pink Floyd's first album Piper at the Gates of Dawn Syd is on that one and a couple songs from their second album Saucerful of Secrets also feature Syd the video for Jugband Blues he basically thanks the band for thinking he's not there. Syd showed up in the studio when Floyd was recording a song about him called Shine on You Crazy Diamond from the Wish You Were Here album and he had changed so much the guys didn't even know who he was till about 45 minutes someone realized it was Syd. Such a sad story but anyway I think this song kind of references Syd and his desire to just avoid life and his attachment to his mom.

As a single parent I appreciate your outlook of knowing that most parents do our best to protect and prepare our kids. I was born in the 70s (genx) my kids were born in 2014 (Gen alpha) the amount of anxiety in trying to prepare and protect my twins from a childhood I do not grasp can be intimidating. I make a choice over something regarding their freedoms vs restrictions then I proceed to sit up half the night analyzing every aspect of whether it is the correct choice. I want to protect them from my traumas while instilling my street smarts I gained from those traumas. Lol does everything have to be a double edge sword? Great reaction.

This album came out when I was in the 9th grade. Always loved it but never thought too deeply about it until more recently. I'm 60 now and my son is 30. I listen to this and wonder what mistakes I may have made and whether my son thinks of me in this way. It makes me incredibly sad not because we have a bad relationship, quite the contrary; we are very close but it makes me reflect back to my mother as well, who was old school Japanese and very strict with nothing less than the highest expectations from me. I think lots of kids blame their parents for their problems but I try to remember that most people do the best that they can at parenting. I also feel somewhat sad for parents today that have to raise their children in the internet age. With depression and anxiety at an all time high, it can't be easy for anyone. I do believe I was blessed to have grown up in the 70s and 80s, just sucks that I'm old now :)

You're definitely on the right track with this song. Pretty much spot on in fact. The character will realize later in life that mother's overprotectiveness hurt him more than it helped. Definitely need to hear all these songs in context of the full album to really appreciate. And I emphasize the *album* . The album should be heard first to hear all the amazing songs and music the way they were meant to be heard.
The album is the authentic piece of music, not the movie which was adapted from the album some years later.
One last tip... When you interrupt, go ahead and back it up a few clicks when you return to the song so as not to ruin the flow and understanding. You're not going to understand this the first time around, that's okay. No one does. It's part of the mystique of the album .
Check out "Hey You" from this album next.
    Good Job!! 👍

Another Brick in the Wall was the 1st Floyd song I ever really took notice of and i was 20 years old by then in 1980. I suppose it was the 'commercial ' style rather than any previous stuff I may have heard because, to me, it was mostly long drawn out repetitive type of melodies and a bit dreary to my teenage ears. I was more into the rock scene like Sabbath and especially the flamboyant Queen.
But I started going into some of their back catalogue and a later live album called Delicate Sound of Thunder at which point I think they were splitting from the main songwriter and influencer, Bassist, Roger Waters.
When I saw them at Earl's Court, London in 1994 I was totally blown away by the power of the music, the arrangements, the musicianship and the atmosphere it created.
I've still not listened to a lot of their deep cut album tracks but i plan to catch up on that more before my days are up.
You, young man, are a credit to yourself and your family.

There's a distinct characteristic of many /most /all PF songs, and that is the amount of aural SPACE they leave in songs. A modern producer would be desperately clamouring for some 'noises' to fill in those gaps. Floyd don't, but just let the songs 'breathe' and fully inhabit the space they create for it.

Love your reactions and subbed for more Pink Floyd.
"What was she protecting him from" you ask? When you get a chance to listen to the album in full without interruption, you'll understand that the main character (named Pink on the album) lost his father to WWII, and his Mother tried maybe a bit too hard to be both parents, and therefore became overprotective. This affected Pink for the rest of his life, and became "another brick in the Wall". The Wall, of course, is a metaphor for the emotional Wall that Pink builds around himself. The album goes on to brilliantly express the bricks that have caused Pink to build the Wall, and the consequences that ensue.
Great job, my friend, I'm enjoying your Pink Floyd journey.

Man, seriously, like others have said, yoh are spot on. And you understand the nuances and humanity in it, both how a child can get messed up by their parent's not being able to manage their, "stuff," so pushing it in the child by being overprotective and reducing their preparedness for life. So they get bitter, pissed.
Yet I can speak as a parent, man, it all changes once you have that child in your life. The problem is, however, that the perceived pain of losing them is so horrifying that you begin protecting yourself, not the child. I am sure I did this for the first 8-10 years of my first born's life. But then I noticed the effects of it, how he couldn't handle even a tiny mote of stress without emotionally breaking down. I knew it was us (my wife and I). So we started learning ro let go. As horrifying as it is, I had to accept the risk inherent in all things, including loss, and move to a place where I know I will survive, find connection, meaningfulness and fulfillment, come what may.
And in this way, just be him being present, I grew to find these things. In this way, by letting go of the need to control the outcome, I connected with myself. Through that, I connected with him.

Great reaction and very sensible reflections. Yes, protective and caring parents are usually a key for a sound childhood. But an overprotective parent might actually do more harm than good as he/she might restrict the mind and soul of the kid in a bad way. You have to make the kids self confident and make them eventually able to stand on their own feet but not transfer all of your own fears and always treat them as your little helpless babies…

If you want a window into the death of Roger Waters father during WW2 Check out :-
    "When the Tigers Broke Free"
Tigers can represent the fighting spirit, but in WW2 the German Main Battle Tank Panzerkampfwagen VI was called the Tiger.
At over 50tons this was one of the most advanced and terrifying machines on the battlefield.
Asking Infantry or even other Tanks to stop a bunch of Tigers would be virtually suicide 😢
And Roger has very strong feelings about those who sent his father to die.

It's not really written from a child's perspective; it's more an adult's reflections on what sits underneath their neuroses and insecurities. It's yet another lyrical masterpiece from Roger Waters.
The contrast in vocal tones from 'mother' to 'child' is so effective, and the tone and pitching of that guitar solo are immense. There's so much more to it - it really should be a school subject. I think it's best if your journey into the album allows you to draw your own conclusions - be aware you will change your mind. Enjoy the film!

remember that these musicians all grew up in post war Britton and that "Mother" lived through the bombing of London. Compare to 2002 NY if you need a reference point.

Although Pink Floyd songs generally have a universal human meaning, you also need to catch up on some PF background & 'mythology'.
The band started out as a collaborative project, up until about 'Meddle'. But, at about this time Roger stepped up to be the self appointed leader, writer & composer. He virtually single handedly [ at least according to him ] wrote DSotM, WYWH, The Wall, Animals & the Final Cut. Dave & Richard were making their own solo work, Nick was buying up the world's supply of Ferraris. It ultimately lead to the break up of the second phase of the band.
But, in writing all of the lyrics, Roger was carrying out his own psychotherapy in plain sight. His Father had been killed in WWII, & he was not going to let the world forget it.
So, you always have to listen to lyrics from this era through that lens. It's what it means to Roger first, & humanity second.

Good reaction to lyrics. I saw you start to enjoy the guitar solo but didn't mention it. At least you have good judgment to not stop in the middle of guitar solo to comment. Also, yes on headphones. Right? Now try Shine on You Crazy Diamond or something from Animals.

How narcissistic Mommas make Momma’s boys. It’s sick. The term for this is called Mother-Son Enmeshment. Great song, but when I hear it, it boils my blood. My husband’s Mother is one of these. He’s 65 and has dealt with C-PTSD his entire life. This stuff begins when the child is super little. I need gold medal for sticking with him for 41 years. And, yeah, she’s still alive. 92 years old and still doing her dirty work.

You can’t be 20. How you think like a man and a father. As you say, until you have children of your own you can’t understand how much love and protection you want to provide. But you do need to let them make their own mistakes so they can mature and grow to be independent. The fact that you recognize the sacrifices your parents have made for you clearly indicate what great parents they are and what a good son you are. Personally, both my daughters are in college. I made it my mission to work hard and send them to private school their whole lives. Also sleep away camp every summer for 10 years. They got accepted to Tufts University and Hamilton College each which costs approx $80k a year. They both said dad we can go to state school in Florida since you did the pre paid college plan when we were babies for $10k each and our college is now covered. I said no, you didn’t squander the million dollars of private school your whole lives and worked hard to get top grades cuz you understood the sacrifice your mom and I made even as divorced parents who still get along so you’re going to the University of your choice. Yes many people without kids could be rich or wealthier but that would be emptier. Without family, what do you really have in life? It makes me happy to see someone so young see things through more mature eyes. Keep up the great Floyd reactions.

😔 Sometimes the World comes to you. Life during Wartime is rough (hence Bombs dropping) especially with Dad off to War. 🤫 But I don't want to spoil the rest of the "story". 😄 Many of the questions you asked will actually be answered as the Album progresses. 🫣 We find out the ramifications of building the wall "so High".... is alls I'm saying. 😎 Looking forward to 🌘 DSoTM too. 🥰🐰

Pink Floyd, named after the bands 2 favorite blues artists, PINK Anderson and FLOYD Council, are British and have been the defacto "trippy spacey psychadelic" gold standard in music since the 1960s. However, along the way, they matured into the goliath of the music industry. Nobody can touch them on more levels than can be listed here. A good example is the album DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, which holds the world record for the most weeks at #1.....just over 4 YEARS. Welcome to Pink Floyd.

You're still a little bit too positive on this particular mother, although undoubtedly she meant well and did the best she could under the circumstances. I highly recommend listening to this album, uninterupted front to back, multiple times with the lyrics at hand to get your grasp on the story it tells. Only then watch the movie.
