I've got the model 24. Still learning but love it for my songwriting style. Lol I just instructions of how to connect my mixer to my DAW FL Studio Signature please help?
Great video, though I’m extremely late watching it. This time last year I purchased the Model 16 and I’m just now getting around to using it. I’m kicking myself now because I had no idea that the iPad with camera connection kit connected very easily to the device. The possibilities with working with the iPad and the mixer by way of powered USB hub, synths and midi controllers are endless! 🤩
I've always believed that knowing your requirements and planning were very important. With this, you can sometimes get on to doing things that others don't even imagine. 😊 Thanks for watching, sharing, and wishing you the very best. 👍🏿
Do all 3 model series have SD card recording capabilities. I have the Tascam 24D Portastudio and am pleased with it, though I don’t see anyway it has 24 tracks. The so-called stereo tracks are not really stereo as I know it. As far as I can tell you can’t record 2 separate tracks on them and you can’t pan the tracks separately. If I am wrong I’d be grateful if you would tell me how to do these things. I know that I can record a pre existing stereo recording from the computer onto the Tascam “stereo” tracks and can export two tracks from the “stereo” tracks.
Yes, all 3 Model series products use SD cards. You are correct regarding the DP24 stereo tracks. That is why some folks select the DP32 because that unit does not have that specific limitation. I hope this information helps. Thanks for watching and sharing. 👍🏿
I bought the 24 model. I returned it because both the shop and Tascam UK assured me that it was impossible to bounce tracks and also to assign an input to several tracks - stuff you can do easily on the dp24. Please reassure me that the people I talked to were correct. Such a beautiful machine. I cannot quantify my disappointment.
I just want Tascam to come out with a second generation 16-24-32 in my dreams with better AD conversion on at least two channels, selectable phantom power and SOLO buttons and and I had better stop there or the price becomes too Pro Grade 🤣. These are pretty cool but fell short of what I wanted them to be. There are some work arounds but I am really getting short on time to have anything impeding workflow. I’m shopping for multi channel interfaces and control surface in which I still consider the 12 for and as a backup tracker and portable rehearsal mixer if I ever get back into collaboration efforts. Really nice summery and presentation here, two thumbs up!!
Would I be able to use a Drum Machine with the Model 12 ? I just want to use the Boss DR880 after dusting it down !! To get a track laid down in Song Mode ! Thanks
Hi Mr Powercoat. OK, so I don’t Podcast, so I don’t need multiple xlr inputs. I voiceover my videos and narrate. I’d like to be able to add compression, de easing etc before I use a daw and have room to add sound effects from recorders and midi instalments later. I was thinking about a Tascam Mixcast 4 or Rodecaster Pro, but now I have seen these mixers, I want one lol. What would you go with in my situation? Cheers mate and greetings from the UK.
I believe any one of the MODEL series would work well in your situation, and allow you to integrate with DAWs if required. Not a bad investment. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
For the Model 16. I want to multitrack record my drums via USB into logic then mix down in logic. Is that possible? I do a lot of tracking to a click by myself so if I can set up tracks in logic hit record then process after that would be awesome.
If the software is compatible you should be good to go. Even if it's not, you should be able to export the drum tracks from your DAW, and import them into the MODEL 16 and go from there. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
It would be nice if u could compare the Mackie pro fx v3 ,Allen and Heath Zed 12 fx ,Soundcraft Signature 12 mkt , Tascam Model 12 and the Yamaha MG12XU
I have a question about the Tascam Model 16 mixer. Does this mixer record via USB into a DAW post or pre fader? I currently have a Presonus AR12 and it records pre fader, so I can't record any fader adjustments and if I use outboard reverb/delay through Aux/FX that is not recorded. I presume the onboard recording would record post fader, but would like to confirm also. Thank you!
That’s a good question. From my understanding this would need to be pre-fader from the MODEL 12 because the DAW software must first be configured to work with the unit. After DAW software configuration, the tracks that then can be controlled and the state and positions of the Model 12 buttons, knobs and faders may not always match. For absolute confirmation, I strongly suggest contacting Tascam support. Thanks for watching and sharing. 👍🏿
If I'm understanding you question correctly, on the MODEL 12 you can sync with MIDI and use it as a MIDI Master or MIDI Slave unit. Thanks for watching and sharing. 👍🏿
@@PowercoatMusic I think he was saying a larger band may do more instruments live at once and a smaller band may do more overdub and use more channels as doubling instruments.
Good question. The OM says you can connect to iOS devices with a lightning connector. Also says it's compatible with MAC and IOS Core Audio. For more details, I suggest contacting Tascam customer service. They are pretty cool. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
Thanks 4 the video. I have a question. Does Model 16 or 24 have metronome features as the Model 12? (Sorry. Did not watch the whole video. You say this on 13:35)
No. As a standalone recorder I did not see any functionality for a metronome on the MODEL 16 or 24 like the 12. However, when the MODEL 16 and 24 are connected to a DAW you should have this feature. Thanks for watching and sharing.
Hi mate i just get an metronome app on my phone and Bluetooth it to the model 24 takes 2 seconds to do, then i clear that track ounce in no longer needing it, then same again when starting my next song, just have to be sure the tempo on the apps right before or you’ll end up back and forward till you get it right lol
thank you for clearly breaking down the actual differences... I'm actually quite baffled as to why Tascam chose to include/exclude the features that are particular to each model such as MIDI. I would have thought it would be quite important for syncing if designing a multitracking device that can sum & track audio from different instruments. I've been wondering how one would overdub, say drum machine parts in the model 16 or 24's multitrack if there's no midi. I suppose there's click and smpte like the old days haha
I hear you, don't know why TASCAM left MIDI out of the 16 and 24, would have been perfect. For me to use a 24 I'd have to use my other interface and pre-record the MIDI tracks, render to audio before switching to the 24 Interface for recording Audio. Not going to happen.
To my ear, yes it surely does. There is a “sweet spot” for inputs and the master channel. When you hit the right level balance, you know. They are cool pieces of gear.
I personally wish that Tascam had made a new and improved DP. I don’t think these Model Series units can make a complete production from start to finish. I’d love to see an even more powerful DP-24/32. DP-48 maybe?
It really depends on what process you use to be most productive in the studio as to how effective the MODEL series will be for you. Many recording artists don’t work the same way. What’s great for one may be bad for another. Plenty of folks love these units as they are powerful and flexible. I still love and use the DPs too. Thanks for watching and sharing. 👍🏿
I don’t find myself needing more tracks than what’s available in these units, and I think there are many people who would agree with me. These are made for people who want to perform their music and not use a DAW. I could see myself making an entire album on this thing, seeing as I’ve already done that on my various cassette Portastudio units
Near all synths, drum machines, groove boxes, samplers & sequencers still include midi...yet none of the recorders do anymore. Simple selling point neglected for a large audience that would buy.
@@freefinancialadvice Of the series, the MODEL 12 only should be able to do what you are asking. It has MIDI IN and OUT Ports, and should be able to be controlled via a MIDI controller and work with a DAW.
Fantastic presentation..... So even with both my 1st gen DP•24 & DP•32 synced via midi, I can only record 16 tracks at the same time, whereas the Model 24 records 24 tracks simultaneously? That would be 8 more on 1 single machine? .... Or did I hear it wrong? .... Thank you for this and Thank you for your time.
Your heard it right. MODEL 24 has multitrack recording and playback with 24-track recording with 22 input channels and MAIN MIX L/R bus. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
Yep. This is why I’m selling my DP32 as well as old mixer in order to buy a Model 24. I think Tascam sees it as the successor (although the DP does have some ‘portastudio’ features not available on the Model series.
@@PianoDanny .... 2 plus years went by so quickly .....😂🤣 So I couldn't get it out of my head. I bled for it because of the already overpriced CAD tag on it, & the usual & unlawful ( under Natural Law ) over•the•counter tax .... but I saved two grands and got the M24 new. You said on the Model 12, recording for tracks 11 and 12 are a "main mix L / R" while pointing to the 7/8 adn 9/10 "Right inputs", calling them "Main Mix L / R". That is not correct. Just look at the back label of the model 12. It's clearly L inputs (XLR) and R inputs (1/4") on the back for inputs 7/8 and 9/10. So where are the true track 11 and 12 inputs? It seems we can record just 10 tracks, because I don't see any inputs for tracks 11 and 12.
Great video thank you for your help, I believe you made a error when describing what each model is targeted for you said the model 12 is for large bands looking to record a live or in the studio 14.32 Not a big deal i think people know what their intended uses are. My question is do the model 12 and model 16 both have 60mm faders because i cannot find this information. Thank you for any help and keep up the great work.
On the screen during that section at 14:30, I have a statement at the bottom of the screen that reads “Correction: Model 24”. Yes, both the MODEL 12 and the MODEL 16 have 60mm faders. This fact is in both of their respective owner’s manuals. Thanks for watching and sharing. 👍🏿
Nice review , so When you record to sd card your individual tracks won’t record with the fx applied ? When I playback the sd card it remembers the levels the faders were at or ? The only way to record the fx per channel is if you track them into your daw and record the tracks with the fx through the daw instead ?
Will tascam add the MIDI in and out functions to the 16 and 24 in the future? This is major to us who wants to start our synths and drum machines with this unit.
Great question. Currently, there's no indication that will happen. But it would be great if it did. We know that MIDI ports are one of the big reasons why the MODEL 12 is so popular. 👍🏿
The major difference is that the Model12 is a DAW controller whereas the 16 & 24 are not. This is significant ommission by Tascam considering the Model 24 is supposed to be the flagship model. As this facility is due to different onboard hardware, my understanding is that neither a software or firmware update will be able change this performance status. Pity as its clearly an opportunity missed.
Along with the Model 12, both the Model 16 and 24 can function as audio interfaces compatible with both MAC and Windows PC DAW applications. Tascam makes this clear not only in their owner’s manuals for both products, but also on their website: tascam.com/us/product/model_24/top . This is a major selling point for this product line. Thanks for watching and sharing.
Good video - thanks! Have you looked at latency of any of the models? I currently use a Steinberg Ur 44c and jam online. My latency is about 8 ms, which seems to be fine. I tried using a Zoom L12, but the latency is about 44 ms. Perhaps I could use one of the Tascam models for live stream jamming with some of my distant musician friends.
If you're referring to latency in regards to a DAW, I have not. However, latency should not be an issue if your using the unit as standalone recorder as there's no intermediate units to contend with. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
The technical specifications for the MODEL 12’s inputs and outputs are analog. Technically, the MODEL 12 is an analog mixer. The entire MODEL series are analog mixers. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
No Model 12 Compressor, EQ and mixing functions are all in the digital realm. It is a digital mixer. Model 16 and 24 are 100% analog, except the multitrack recorder.
@@jeffreyschmoyer4851 Actually that is not correct. The effects are digital but the preamp INS and OUTS are ANALOG on the MODEL 12. That makes it an analog mixer with digital effects. There’s a big difference there. This fact is documented in TASCAM Technical specifications for the MODEL 12.
@Jeffrey Schmoyer One more thing to add. The MODEL 12 uses the same INPUT and OUTPUT preamp HDDA hardware as the MODEL 16 and the MODEL 24, which is ANALOG. Again, this is as per TASCAM’s own Technical Specifications for each unit in the MODEL series. Effects are digital, mixer is analog. Thanks for watching.
I currently own both Model 16 and Model 12. The block diagrams in the manuals show very clearly the difference: the Model 12 is a digital mixer because the ADC precedes the compressors and EQ for all the channel strips. So the actual sound mixing is mixing digital summing . In the Model 16 and 24 those same circuits are all analog and the mixing is happening by summing analog voltage signals. Yes, pre amps are the same (and analog) in all 3, that’s true. But the Model 12 has very very different guys than the other 2 - and that digital difference cascades to a bunch of other very nice things in terms of features: - switchable feed of the Multitrack pre or post compressor - switchable solo modes pre or post fader And other good stuff. But at the expense of a small difference in mixed sound quality. Both are warm sounding, but the Model 16 is a tad warmer to my ears. And I do mean a tad. By the way, Love your videos. Keep ‘em coming .. and would be worth it to edit this to include some of these differences.
The model 12, 16, 24 all send midi time code via USB. The model 12 also sends midi clock/spp along with midi time code via 5 pin midi and USB. A work around (if you only have 5 pin midi) would be to lay a sync track with a korg volca fm 2 or any sonicware gear (for example liven xfm) oh and the novation circuits (not the circuit tracks or circuit rhythm). Just like laying smpte on a tape track. The main thing is none of the tascam model series sync to anything, everything has to sync to them. Hope this helped.
Features-wise these fall short of being a truly professional solution: Lack of channel inserts, lack of aux returns, no MIDI or DAW controller compatibility on the 16/24 (why?!), only global phantom power, etc. Unless you really need to record to an SD card, you’re better off getting a regular old analog mixer and a separate audio interface, imo. Of course it depends on what you need to accomplish in the studio.
Why....cost. If ypu want more feature get a 5000 one... At this price range nothing offer more. I have the 24 and im very happy. I have a 1 mototised fader for logic that i use in conjonction with this. There is nothing in that price range that come close.
The sd card is perfect a 32 gig cost 14$ My computer blew...i had all my client raw track on a sd card...i have one for each client. I use the daw to process track... Use the board for hands on mix... Best of both words. And i always have back up.
You know this makes me rethink the model 16 and 24 even if they irritate me for lack of certain features that I don’t mind paying for however they do seem a fair use bang for the buck at their points. The 12 is not big enough and I want top inserts, maybe a single or two faders for the DAW will work because I only fool one at a time anyhow. Good point thx
none of these new tascams have a bounce tool like the 32 track portastudios form tascam you 'can' bounce tracks but you have to manually patch up such a task.. it's a workaround and show that it's not really much like the postastudios from the 244 in the 80's onward in this regard. they are cool but they are clunky in some aspects.
Complete noob question here. When connecting guitar, can you run your amp directly into anyone of the units using the cable you would otherwise plug into your cabinet? If not, what do you have to do?
Even if the output from the amp doesn’t break the input, it’s only gonna sound like a speakerless amp. Better to put a microphone in front of the speaker for recording. For silent recording, you need an interface or a speaker simulator system.
Its funny i left your page becaus i didnt ser this just scrolling. And youre the first result! you go above and beyond comparing these units... Got me watching how tos on tech i dont even own. Great channel definitely subbing👍

You say "they combine the warmth of analog with a digital workflow." This makes no sense because all the audio processing is done in between the converters. They provide tangible knobs and faders. Nice, yes, but nothing to do with "warmth."
So hard to follow along with the fake voice inflection 😂and saying certain things when you don’t have to is called rambling 😢…review the info and understand it before you make a video sounding like a ai bot😅

The Model 12 does not have phono inputs like the 16 and 24, right?
Correct. Model 12 does not have phono inputs. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
think i might upgrade to the model 16 . well done with presenting all the info !
Thanks for watching.
It's possible. Check out this video from Tascam that shows you how to do it. ruclips.net/video/d2ov4giWpVw/видео.html -Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
Thanks so much for watching and sharing. 👍🏿
Would I be able to use a Drum Machine with the Model 12 ? I just want to use the Boss DR880 after dusting it down !! To get a track laid down in Song Mode ! Thanks
Yes. The MODEL 12 has built-In MIDI ports too, so you should be good to go. Thanks for watching and sharing. 👍🏿
Does this unit pump out analog sound like a portastudio 424?
MODEL 16 and MODEL 24 are analog, and they blow the old 424 away. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
That would be a whole lot of trips to a few stores that accept returns 🤣
Does the MIDI from the Model 12 make MIDI sync possible or turn the mixer into a master clock?
If I'm understanding you question correctly, on the MODEL 12 you can sync with MIDI and use it as a MIDI Master or MIDI Slave unit. Thanks for watching and sharing. 👍🏿
Still trying to get my head around the difference. The 12 is for a larger band and the 24 is for a smaller band or solo artist?
Actually, it's the other way around. The 12 is for the smaller setup. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
@@PowercoatMusic I took it the other way from what he said.
@@PowercoatMusic I think he was saying a larger band may do more instruments live at once and a smaller band may do more overdub and use more channels as doubling instruments.
He just misspoke in the video...He meant Model 24, not Model 12, is for the more established band...
@@silvebackmgmt.8929 I was wondering. I am about 95% on getting this
Do they work with Apple M1 Chip?
Good question. The OM says you can connect to iOS devices with a lightning connector. Also says it's compatible with MAC and IOS Core Audio. For more details, I suggest contacting Tascam customer service. They are pretty cool. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
@@PowercoatMusic Already contacted them) They responded that it does work with M1 chips which is great! Thanks
@@craighughes-shug6694 Thanks watching and for sharing your solution with everyone. It's much appreciated. 👍🏿
thank you for clearly breaking down the actual differences...
Does this add the analog console colour to the material ran through it?
To my ear, yes it surely does. There is a “sweet spot” for inputs and the master channel. When you hit the right level balance, you know. They are cool pieces of gear.
Does the 24 come with a meter bridge
No it does not. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
Your videos have been of great help to me. Comprehensive and concise. Many thanks!
You're most welcome. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
Near all synths, drum machines, groove boxes, samplers & sequencers still include midi...yet none of the recorders do anymore. Simple selling point neglected for a large audience that would buy.
Great point and agreed. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
Yeah but can these be controlled from midi controller > to Daw > to Mixer ?
I think the model 12 have midi support though
@@hailesam3567 Yes. The MODEL 12 does have a MIDI IN and OUT interface.
2 plus years went by so quickly .....😂🤣
So I couldn't get it out of my head. I bled for it because of the already overpriced CAD tag on it, & the usual & unlawful ( under Natural Law ) over•the•counter tax .... but I saved two grands and got the M24 new.
I do keep both dp24 & dp32 to have different sessions going simultaneously.
I don't think I could get much for them on ebay. I feel as if only nostalgic dudes would want them anyway by now .... but I might be off on that assumption.
@@PowercoatMusic Sorry i must have missed that Thank you for the info on the faders.
@@bobby9727 No worries 😊 ...and you are most welcome.
Nice review , so When you record to sd card your individual tracks won’t record with the fx applied ? When I playback the sd card it remembers the levels the faders were at or ? The only way to record the fx per channel is if you track them into your daw and record the tracks with the fx through the daw instead ?
You can get creative with it to save the settings for each track.
does anyone know if the model 24 has been updated to match what the 12 can do? thanks.
If you're talking about DAW control, the answer is no! Models 24 and 16 are analogs and Model 12 is digital.
Thank you... I'm finally ready for 24, but I think I ust need 16. Thank you for the video.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
I’m also debating between the 16 and 24
Will the model 24 fit in a common mixer rack?
No but 16 will
@@xammai9679 yeah I ended up getting the 16 right after this post.
@Eden Dalls Correct.
@@PowercoatMusic Only the Model 12 can work as a control surface.
Correct and an important point as well. 😊
great work. wondering too…I’m now thinking of the retirement of my Podtrak…
Yes, it just might be time. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
The model 12 is technically a digital mixer correct ? The model 16 and model 24 are analog ?
But the Model 12 has very very different guys than the other 2 - and that digital difference cascades to a bunch of other very nice things in terms of features:
- switchable feed of the Multitrack pre or post compressor
- switchable solo modes pre or post fader
And other good stuff. But at the expense of a small difference in mixed sound quality. Both are warm sounding, but the Model 16 is a tad warmer to my ears. And I do mean a tad.
By the way, Love your videos. Keep ‘em coming .. and would be worth it to edit this to include some of these differences.
Awesome review! Great presentation. Many thanks.

If Model 16 had MIDI, I'd buy two of them RIGHT NOW. I've HAVE to have MIDI interfacing. Sad that Tascam doesn't offer this.
Why you need a midi in 16? 16 means you need it for group of instruments and with midi in that scenario is a bad idea.
The sd card is perfect a 32 gig cost 14$
My computer blew...i had all my client raw track on a sd card...i have one for each client.
I had one for a couple of days and noticed one fatal flaw. You can’t listen to the headphones unless the main faders are up.
Omg- that’s like really fatal
Hey chip I looked this up. I think you need to play with the PFL and AFL buttons along with PFL/AFL knob. Please report back.
FATALITY!
Nice job!

none of these new tascams have a bounce tool like the 32 track portastudios form tascam
you 'can' bounce tracks but you have to manually patch up such a task.. it's a workaround
and show that it's not really much like the postastudios from the 244 in the 80's onward
in this regard.
they are cool but they are clunky in some aspects.
I quite like routing with patch cables to bounce.
Very good stuff.
I found the model 12 sounds better for drums than the 24 did. Anyone else experience this?

You say "they combine the warmth of analog with a digital workflow." This makes no sense because all the audio processing is done in between the converters. They provide tangible knobs and faders. Nice, yes, but nothing to do with "warmth."
The resulting sound that I was referring to is of course is a matter of opinion. Thanks for watching and sharing.
Um, the model 12 isn't analog doh...
