Mumbai's local trains, the city's lifeline, form one of the world's busiest suburban rail networks. Comprising the Western, Central, Harbour, Trans-Harbour, and Vasai Road-Diva-Panvel lines, they connect vast urban and suburban areas. Trains, running every 3-5 minutes during peak hours, handle immense passenger volumes, with both fast and slow services available. Ticketing includes single journey options and season passes, with smart cards and mobile apps for convenience. Despite issues like overcrowding and safety concerns, developments such as air-conditioned trains and station upgrades are underway. Key stations like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Dadar, Thane, and Andheri serve as major hubs. The trains are integral to daily life, offering an economical, quick transport mode and fostering a unique commuter community. They symbolize Mumbai's vibrancy and resilience, playing a crucial role in its socio-economic fabric.

4:00 incorrect logic, even if delays happen during initial implementations, that's how people will learn. They have to learn that they cannot just endlessly pile up on the doors.
Also, it's our nation's collective shame that we didn't modernize or scale railways for capacity after British left. This is so shameful that we are 1.4 billion population and still foreign companies are providing us advanced technology and bullet trains, when we should've been the one to develop all this. (Thanks socialism and Congress)
At this point of time, we shouldn't have any non AC trains in the entire network of Indian railways. This is so depressing that we still use LHB and antique ICF coaches in trains.
Auto close doors are just one part of the solution puzzle and should not be looked in isolation. Holistic high quality solutions should be developed to tackle this issue. 2,500 people are dying and still our conscience is sleeping. It's not only safety issue but dignity and quality of life issue as well.

We can learn from tokyo's yamanote line. Even though it is a metro line, it sees crowd density similar to mumbai local. Transverse seating can increase the capacity by a bit, and 5 doors instead of 4 can be implemented. Air conditioning can still be avoided if the automated doors have reinforced mesh openings since cost seems to bother railways more than safety

Transverse seating option was implemented by railways but it was rejected. The travelling time for a 10km journey in Mumbai is around 20-25 mins avg in city & 15 mins as we move away from city (due to less stations). Many people travel 100km daily in one direction and can't afford to stand for 2 or 2.5 hrs. Hence it is rejected. Even for shorter journeys like 30 kms, the travel time is approx 50 mins to 1 hr. People won't accept standing 1 hr daily after a tiresome day in the office.

I find it hard to believe that time is a reason for the railway to not install doors. We see so many trains running so late (sometimes late by hours) in India. If time was really a concern, they would've done something about all those delays in so many trains. So, if you're saying that the lack of doors is so that they can save a few seconds per station, i find that hard to believe.

None of the issues you raised make an excuse for not implementing the automatic door system in the railways
There's one way to reduce crowd in local trains. Employ a system which checks tickets of daily passengers compulsorily. You will see the crowd get reduced to 20% of its capacity and the railways will be on profits and they can complete the projects. Jitna railways ki galti hai usse zyada galti public ki hai jo ticket ke 20 rupay nahi dete lekin 100 chize demand karte hai.
Trains ko ek public service ki tarah treatment dena bandh karna hoga aise hi public ko akal aayegi aur hamare llocal train system mein sudhar aayegi

The reduced seating option was tested by railways and people have rejected it. Mainly becoz people don't want to stand 1 or 2 hrs after their day finishes. This trains get jam packed at the origin station. I travel daily on local. And during my 30km journey if I am lucky then hardly 1 or 2 passenger gets up from his seat. A 2x2 or 3x2 seating arrangement will reduce this probability drastically. Hence people has rejected this option.

      3 Major reasons -
      1. 6 lines only from Vidyavihar to Kalyan. So express trains use 4 lines instead of 2, leaving less tracks for local trains. We all will be long gone before 5th and 6th lines are added from Kurla to CSMT.
      2. Not enough platforms at Kalyan Jn. Kasara line and Karjat/Khopoli line converge at Kalyan.
      3. Probably the biggest reason - Diva Jn railway crossing. Diva Jn is THE place for projects done in a half assed manner. Want to build a Road Overbridge to close the crossing? Don't worry. We have an ROB with a ramp only on the east side, and no ramp on its west side, giving an opportunity for all the vehicles to do action movie level stunts. Want to reduce overcrowding at platforms 1 and 2? Don't worry. We have built a cement platform with no tiles or yellow marker tiles for blind people on the west side of the station, only for around 7 bogies of a 12 bogie train.

@AskPT The principal problem is of over-demand and under-capacity. Mumbai really needs RRTS or something along those lines. It would provide fast-paced connectivity throughout the Mumbai with fewer stations. The RRTS stations should be near a metro station to ensure last-mile connectivity. RRTS alone is not suitable but with metro, it seems to solve the problem of local trains. The problem is, a large part of middle class in Mumbai travels via Mumbai local even though it doesn't want to. The reason is that travelling by car is prohibitively expensive for everyday use, costing in around thousand rupees per ride (if it is far) and is also time-taking. Whereas Mumbai local is dirt cheap, thus, a huge crowd travels by it. The RRTS, in tandem with Mumbai metro would fill in the gap between dirt cheap local and expensive and time-taking cabs. A huge part of crowd will use that option. The effect would be the decongestion of both Mumbai local and also the roads. RRTS+Metro project may need billions of dollars, but it is crucial for the unhindered growth of Mumbai in decades to come. Please give your take on this?

THE SOLE PROBLEM HERE IS NOT TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES OR COST OR FUNDING BUT WILL TO CARRY OUT WORK.WELL MENTIONED POWERTRAIN NOR BABUS ARE INTERESTED NEITHER THE CENTER RAILWAY BOARD , BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T TRAVEL IN LOCALS EVEN ONCE IN THEIR LIFETIME
    It REALLY HURTS!

Incorrect logic. The real reason is govt doesn’t want to upgrade local trains because they want people to shift to Metro. The current government is friends with the people who owns Mumbai metro. If they upgrade the train which is very much possible as now they have vande metro people won’t shift to metro as local is more convenient and the whole ecosystem is built around locals.

Mumbai Suburban rail deaths are downright criminal. How do these babus justify loss of life vis-a-vis investments required make suburban travel safer. Secondly the premium charged for AC locals are also ridiculous. When AC metros can cheaper per km why does suburban AC trains have to be many times more expensive ?

I disagree with you logic at 4:00 You have undermined mumbaikars ability to change for better technology.
The same mumbaikars who change at Ghatkopar Andher stations and take metro manage the automatic closed door situation properly. The crowd situation there are nothing different than this.
I also disagree with you at 5:55 about high cost of operations, maintenance etc
Bullet trains will serve hardly 1 lakh upper middle class people on daily basis. For that they spend INR 180,000 Crore. Here average 80 Lakh commuters travel putting their life on edge just to earn their daily bread everyday.
These 80 Lakh commuters may not be upper middle class but collectively they drive the financial capital of this country. 2500 lives lost every year is nothing less precious than of those for whom they build bullet trains.
Therefore, every mumbaikar should learn how much of the tax is contributed by Mumbai alone. And how these tax payers money are being utilized. (Bhai ab koi ye mat bolna ki me gareeb hu aur income tax nai bharta. GST is desh me har koi bhar ta he.)
