  • HIV / AIDS is still considered a global epidemic by the World Health Organisation. Around 60 per cent of new infections occur in sub-Saharan Africa. In the UK and US we view it as a distant crisis, but many members of the scientific and LGBT communities will never forget the horrific peak of the 1980s.
Fran Drinkwater speaks to campaigners, an epidemiologist and AIDS survivor.

I was a teenager at the time and remember how scared everyone was. The ads were frightening.
I watched skins recently and can't believe there's no 'safe sex' message, they all seem to be having sex all the time without protection.

I certainly have not forgotten this epidemic. Lost people to it. Supported many others living with it, both as a friend and as a worker in the HIV sector. The release of tritherapies in the late 90s was a game changer. Suddenly there was hope. But as society started to realise that HIV+ people were not dying in droves anymore, awareness rising and stigma busting efforts started to recede into the LGBTQ+ minority corner I'm part of. That's why so many cis-gendered straight people started being infected in the 2000s. and that is also why stigma still persists. There is still need for a general media campaign concerning awareness of what HIV is, whom it concerns and why it's better to not have it, as the existence of efficient therapies should never be mistaken for a ticket to ignoring the risk of infection.
