[Stephanie, an SLG leader is sitting on a chair at the library]
[Stephanie] Hi, my name is Stephanie.
[Kashika, an SLG leader is sitting on a chair near a window at the library.]
[Kashika] Hi, everyone. My name is Kashika.
[Stephanie] I am an SLG leader.
[Kashika] And I'm an SLG leader at the University of Guelph. SLGs, or Supported, Learning Groups, are student led sessions on course material for historically difficult courses at the University of Guelph.
[Stephanie] They're just a really fun way to get to know other students in your class and also have some fun interactive study time.

[Kashika] Students can attend any SLG session based on their time and scheduling needs.
[Stephanie] One or two sessions a week, it's totally up to you. SLG's are a really great place to make sure that you're keeping up with all the material that's being covered in your classes. Also, a great way to study with friends. That is more fun than studying by yourself.

[Kashika] Leaders try to create activities that not only help you review the material, but also have fun along the way.
[Stephanie] We have quizzes and fun games and just different methods to study material.
[Kashika] These activities involve memory retention as well as critical thinking to aid students in knowing the material in the best way possible.

[Stephanie] Supported learning groups are based in evidence-based learning strategies, and it helps students learn how they learn best.

[Kashika] So they have these strategies incorporated into their own studying when they're studying independently. These strategies also aid with retention and memory of all the different course materials.
[Stephanie] Students that attend one or more SLG sessions typically end up enjoying the class more and also achieving better grades in the class.
[Kashika] So a lot of the courses that SLG sessions are run for include the high risk courses at the University of Guelph.

[Stephanie] First, second, and third year courses that are more difficult in that students have a harder time with, many biology, chemistry, engineering and many other types of courses. SLG leaders are students that have taken your classes before and have succeeded, and they're fun people who are willing to help you succeed as well. So they're the ones behind the scenes running fun activities, attending your lectures with you, and overall just there to support you in your classes.

[Kashika] So SLG sessions are a really great resource and I believe that they offer a really friendly environment and positive atmosphere for students to get to know other people, learn the course content and overall enjoy the university experience.
