- Track 9: Whippin' Post. This is the closing night of The Fillmore East, a very special show that has flirted with an official release for over 30 years.
"The tape begins with Graham introducing the Allman Brothers Band as one of the best he's heard according to his untrained ears, and the band embark on a show that packs a lot into an eighty minute set. The opening numbers show some restraint and not until "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed" does the band get into an elongated jam session reaching over twelve minutes. The show ends with a twenty minute "Whipping Post" and a seventeen minute encore "You Don't Love Me"/ "Final Serenade" where Duane Allman quotes Handel's "Joy To The World". "

Dickey's solo gives me goosebumps especially @6:44. The man deserves way more credit that what we give him

Such a beautiful song! God, I wish I could play like that. My teenaged daughters play guitar and I introduced them to ABB's music, I feel so great when they try to jam to their music. Keeping it alive!

This 83 yr old great-grandma totally agrees with you. I've had 50 great years of listening to them. Saw them in concert in 1973 and was blown away since I was standing right beneath Greg's keyboard at the stage.
One,of the biggest differences,between these guy's and 99% of all rock bands,is most bands played the standard 2,3 minute radio clip.Those other bands told a 3 minute story.The Brothers, carried us on an almost,unending journey.These guys,were from another world. They knew.peace
NObody jammed like the Brothers back in their creative prime.....The album live at Fillmore East still was the best of all the jams. It's so cool to hear this version after all these years. Thanks a million to who ever posted it.

and to think about the torch Greg carried and bandmates carried and marched on with after losing Duane and then a year later the bassist .... simply amazing... they was just kids themselves having to survive and cope....

Duane was so much like Hendrix in that it was pure blues with an aggressive psychedelic vibe. Which is why back in the day in the 70's that Rolling Stone top 100 guitarist of all-time has Duane at # 2 behind Hendrix. If only he lived who knows what we would have seen/heard.

remember being mesmerized by this type of music back in the day as a kid in grade school... I think I found one of the best examples ever made.... goosebumps....
I saw the Allman Brothers once back in about 1973 and they played til 3:30 in the morning.........wow, what a concert............

My kingdom for a time machine! This is magic. Sometimes I wonder how different the band would be if Duane and Oakley hadn't met their incredibly tragic fates. I wonder what Duane's legacy would have been if he'd been alive and playing for the past 45 years. Dude's already a legend and he died at 24. Would Gregg ever have gone down the paths he went down with the drugs and the failed relationships if Duane hadn't been killed? These are gifted men playing with soul and passion. You don't make music like this much anymore.
I know it's been a year since you commented on this. I have to say that you have got that right. There is no replacement for greatness. The joy, excitement, the sorrow, no one else said it better.

Love that transition at 2:10! Typical of this amazingly soulful player who never played it the same way twice.
This one is legendary also along with whatever other versions you can listen to that had Duane at the helm of the original 6.
Man, they should release "At Fillmore East" as a box set. It would be include the footage of this concert in it too, if its around.
I am so thankful for these additional releases as I wondered for years about the improvisational desire and ability, rather than near note-for-note replication. Duane plays different solos for the different recordings of each song -- attesting to his soul and talent. Does anyone know of a link to an interview of Duane wherein he comments on his guitar performance regarding this performance and the March 1971 Fillmore release? Gregg says that Duane had wanted the live cuts (Trouble No More; Mountain Jam; One Way Out) to be on Eat A Peach, they were not last-minute filler tracks after Duane's death.

I was at one of the Filmore East shows when I was a kid in 1970. Sorry you don't like this stuff, but believe me, in their time, they were the best. Perhaps if you had a Kenwood, some nice speakers and a good turntable, sat in a dark room with some mellow lights, lit a fatty and downed a few tall cold ones, you might feel differently! Rock on, my friend!

Agreed but i think Duane took it to the next level and no one has been able to come close to the exciting and energy filled level Duane did. Jesus Christ, only 24 when I died. Can anyone imagine how much better he would have become if he where still alive. He only played slide for 3 years before his death on Oct 29th 1971. 3 yrs. and he played that well. wow!! Paul

I've noticed on some of the other live versions I've heard that the tempo is up a bit. Can't really called it rushed because they stretch it out so well and seamlessly

What I wouldn't pay if it were possible to go back and see this concert with Duane still alive. I wonder what would have happened if he had joined Derek and the Dominos as Eric Clapton had asked him to.They had met after a concert one night and wound up jamming for a few days.Clapton asked Duane to join his new project,and according to a few people considered it. In the end he rejected it and returned to the Allman Bro's Band after missing several shows.The jam sessions were put on Layla and Other Assorted love songs love songs issued that November. What if.
+BadMan It's a great story about that session in Miami and your recall of it is the same as mine. Clapton has a long history of not staying with any particular band or group for long (Yardbirds, Cream, Blind Faith) so even had Duane joined Derek and the Dominos, it may not have lasted that long anyway. But Duane played on many songs on that Layla album, plus the jam session, so we have all that to treasure.

One can place their Betts that Dickey is most definitely one premier musician BTA I also give one major standing Clap for EZ who's been 3 times inducted in the R&R Hall of Fame being honored as a member of the Yardbirds in 1992, then with Cream in 1993 and finally as a solo artist in 2000. Those who call and nicknamed him God then YES even he'll agree ;) : . I can't believe so many are misunderstanding what this person wrote. He's saying he's sorry that he didn't start appreciating the Allman Brothers Band until 30+ years too late. He heard this song and found out they're awesome and that he has spent the last 30+ years without finding out who they are or how great they were/are.
It's a happy post. It's a "Look! I've finally realized they're awesome! I'm only sad it took this long before I found about their awesomeness!"-type of post. :p

The country & the world were still in turmoil, the Vietnam War raging, Civil Rights still being fought for, the Kent State & Jackson State mass murders by the troops of the political oligarchical class still fresh in peoples minds. Drugs were also rampant...
Pulls out the soapbox:::::: I think that Derrick , Dickey and duane are some of the best pickers. Of all time. But even duane said a number of times. That he could not hold a candle when it came to the MASTER of the slide. He said it was his greatest influence. The Master of the slide. The guy the rest want to be like. The one they learned from.... that would be Mr. Elmore James the King of the slide. Well without him. No one would be playing the slide. just my humble opinion. May theyAll R.I.P
correct and he was about 20 days shy of his 25th birthday, my math makes that nearly 3 yrs if it were the beginning of his 22nd yr, which it was. None the less, he is still considered to be the best as far as slide guitar is concerned.

@iamnotanumberiamaman - "Mountain Jam" on the "Eat a Peach" album is from the Fillmore concerts, but not sure if it's the same night. This recording-- although dang good--isn't the same one on the Fillmore album. I've heard there is actually footage of one or some of the shows, produced by PBS, but never released for sale. I'd love to have a copy of that!!!!

Hey, my man, I respect that. The thing I love about music though is that it "can" go through changes no matter how rough. I like the song (Whipping Post) but it was a different time back then. I am assuming you are 27-33? I watch "American Idol" and just love all types of jams without a doubt. I take that back about saying My Man, instead I will say what's up Santiago to show respect to your given name.

I think what Ronnie is eluding to is that the very first two solos (1st by Duane and 2nd by Dickie) were in fact rushing a bit, and in-and-out of sync with the rest of the band...I agree with that...but the rest of this epic jam is a creative and highly emotional masterpiece!

It's beautiful. That solo and Duane's ferocious solo at the beginning makes this my favorite version of all that I've heard.
In the picture for this video Duane looks like he has alien fingers on his right and he's flipping the bird with his left!
You're right, it really makes your soul bleed, and if medieval medics had this music, I'm pretty sure people would've instantly been cured of whatever was wrong so no leeches would've been required. Unfortunately those dead were probably due to mental stress from their mind being blown

@animenutjobiscrazy Yeah that is right. Dickey always went second on Whipping Post, even on the first studio album. But I noticed he and Duane switched slots on Stateboro Blues in 1971. Duane had a more wild and bit hotter stye than Dickey & Dickey was a bit more melodic and played rounder notes. Both could be real "spacy" so they were really a great guitar team. As good as Haynes &D. Trucks are, they fall a bit short of this.. the REAL ORIGINAL Allman Brothers sound.

I never got to see Dire Straits. Or more accurately, I didn't go to see them. I hated one song by them, Sultans of Swing. Years later, I hear a song by them and discover what I had been missing. So, I understand what you said, 707jetairliner! :) You can still go see the Allman Brothers...
