  • Post hurricane shelling is probably the most exciting shelling you can do. It's not always guaranteed that the piles will be there, but sometimes it ends up being epic.

You are such a "glass half-full" person! After all that you have been through lately, it is wonderful to see and hear in your voice. What an amazing video, so many living creatures for us to enjoy this trip to the beach. I was enthralled to see you interact with that octopus! I turned 65 this year, and was thinking about a new hobby to commemorate the milestone, and found YOU on RUclips. You inspired me to immerse myself in shelling. Living in Ontario, Canada (currently buried in snow) has forced me to get creative about beginning, and expanding my newfound passion. You mentioned in an episode, that if you are purchasing shells, to choose a vendor with no live source shells. I have followed your advice, and only chosen moral and ethical sources. Thank you for being "YOU" and inspiring us each week as we tag along to the beach with you.

Now that's my Beach Angel, full of joy and anticipation! So good to hear your voice happy with excitement!
Can hardly wait to tag along to see how Kice fared in the storms!
I wonder how we look to a horse conch! Their eyes seem to be so focused on our faces...hmmm.
Strangely enough, I never heard of Kice Island before meeting you and seeing your explorations of this amazing shelling island. If I ever get down your way, I'll make sure to visit Kice.
I find it odd that I was planning a trip to SWFL after I recover from my heart surgery, but after two hurricanes and my lengthy recovery, it seems that I will not make my journey for quite some time. I know from growing up in NWFL that it will take years for the hurricane damage to be repaired.
I was thinking about it the other day and I realized how many of my childhood memories were of running from hurricanes, stuffed into the back seat of a car filled with suitcases, dogs, cats and birds in cages. It was during one such trip that I learned that my grandma's parrot really could talk! This discovery kept me amused for hours, much to my Daddy's dismay.
Oh, Sharmon, hearing the delight in your voice at finding that Rose Murex is like medicine to my storm battered spirit! God bless your sweet, always optimistic soul!
I admire you so much, dear lady, for your throwing your energy and courage into restoring your world and recovering the losses the sea caused when it abandoned its boundaries and ravaged the fragile land. Others might sit and cry, but not you, dear Beach Angel! I don't know if you are a native Floridian, but you have the soul of one born with the sound of the sea in your ears and the salty sea breeze filling your lungs. People who were cut from your sturdy fabric settled that land in the first place, giving their life's blood and energy to wrestling a living from the palmetto thickets and the mangrove swamps. As a descendant of a Spanish explorer who helped to settle Pensacola over five hundred years ago, I offer my profound gratitude to you and for you for your efforts to help rebuild your tropical seaside home.
Don't make excuses for your trip to Kice Island! You deserve a fun experience to scrub your soul clean from the sound of the wind and waves. I'm only sad that I wasn't there, too!
Take good care of yourself, dear. Don't take on too much. Don't worry about making videos. We'll survive.
    Much love, The Lost Mermaid

Ok, now I have your health update 😃 I am a pisces, so I assume that is what makes me love the gulf waters and its inhabitants so much. Being born in California but spending most of my adult life in New Jersey I think just makes me tenacious. I do not give up and I look at the impossible as a challenge - not an obstacle. Being in the backseat with so many critters actually sounds like fun! We used to breed love birds, so we really like our critters, domestic or wild. Thank you for coming along my beach adventures with me. I hope they can hold you over until you can come here for yourself! ❤️

Your encounter was only brief but you did help it back to the water. It may revisit the area so next time you are there, maybe it will be back to greet you?? ...you may need to get into the water. I’m looking forward to more snorkeling adventures 😊❤

I think this might just be my most favorite episode yet!!!! 🥰❤️ So excited that you got to see the octopus 🐙! So cute!!! Oh! And the White operculum! I found one of those! I didn’t know what it was! So neat! Kice was my absolute favorite place that I went when I visited at the first week of September. I would have stayed all day there if Allie hadn’t been driving the kayak! 😂 And she is a magnificent tour guide! I loved hearing the joy in your voice. That was beautiful. 🥰

Thank you so much Denise. This was truly one of the most magical few hours I've spent on Kice. I don't know if it was the critters and shells or if enough time has finally passed and I can "enjoy" the beach again - any which way I'll take it. I had myself a blast and I appreciate you sharing my beach love!

I "82 and all this new stuff is a little mind boggling. Thanks for the wonderful tour. My grandaughter was on the east coast out fishing. She is just 19 and caught an Octopus that was a little larger. The man helping get it off the hook got inked. I kept worrying that would happen to you. You are brave. Keep shelling. I love watching you pick up the shells and being so exdited about them. Hugs.

My mother, daughter and I spent a week in a condo on Tigertail. I loved the great vacation shelling. Hated to leave, but brought home 15# of shells. We left for home on 11/15. I was excited to find a live angel wing, live tulip and an octopus. I rescued a stranded spiny sea star and found some great sand dollars.

    Hi Sharmon,
What a great haul of shells!
Amazing to see the octopus and the Gaudi Nautica. I never thought that the operculum was white. It almost looked like a piece of shell.
I know you're doing your best to make a video, but the circumstances are so difficult right now. So don't worry if you can't make one.
We will be here, patiently waiting until you have the opportunity to make some content.

You and I are on the same page when it comes to the Florida Fighting Conch. It is probably a mundane find for those who live and shell and Florida. Never take for granted something in abundance or discount its beauty because it is common. They are beautiful ... versatile in color, and appearance. The juveniles of the species are especially beautiful. Because of their abundance and aesthetic appeal they are probably what most out of state shell seekers take delight in and take home with them. One day I will be one of those shell seekers.
I do have a sidebar comment. I live in Oregon where Pacific sand dollars are found off certain beaches. Sometimes the beaches are littered with them and other times only a trained eye can find them just under the sand. In this situation, the only thing exposed a portion of the sand dollar's top ... about the size of a quarter. The dark sand and dark sand dollars make for a challenging game of hide and seek. I have even found keeper-size dungeness crab hunkered down under the sand. It's horrible what the seagulls do the these crab if found. I leave them covered and sometimes top with a little more sand.
While living sand dollars are often swept ashore I do not collect them. Most certainly they won't make it as there is no way for them to get back to their seabed location. Tossing them back in the surf is futile as they are quickly brought back to shore by the waves. No where in my research have I found where removing grounded live sand dollars from the sandy shores of Oregon is a violation. So, I leave them to sadly die on their own.
I have found deceased sand dollars ranging from the size of a very tiny button to ones that spread to 4-6 inches. I have commented on your channel before that after much time collecting and cleaning the sand dollars I paint coastal scenes on them for ornaments.
I am always excited to watch your videos. I enjoy the anticipation of your search and the thrill of finding a perfect shell. And, I appreciate the knowledge you share and your care/concern for your precious ecosystem.

I had an especially amazing day today on Keewaydin. When I share the video you will know why. I spent a good amount of time picking up the Fighting Conchs. I actually took out a second shell bag and started filling it when I was leaving the beach.
Not being able to save the sand dollars would drive me batty! I'm sure I'd get used to it eventually, but as you know I always help a sea critter out if I can. I collected hundreds of the tiniest sand dollars not all that long ago and finally took the hours upon hours to paint the sealant on them. To think I found my first whole one back in 2017 and now I find them all the time. My how life changes.
I saw someone decoupage on sand dollars and it was beautiful. I would imagine the scenes you paint on them are amazing! 🥰
