  • Post hurricane shelling is normally something I get really excited about. I watch the storm and try to figure out which beach I'll hit. Well, this hurricane had me running for Orlando, and once it hit I really had no desire to go to the beach. My heart was too broken to do anything other than clean up and try to help my neighbors.
I have called the county and will be attending a meeting regarding tourism next month and I have signed up to be notified when the county will start cleaning the beach. I am looking to perhaps sponsor a portion of the beach and help clean up.

I think I got the junonia you were looking for. It was near the water on Wednesday afternoon. Kind of bittersweet after losing 2 cars in a flooded garage. I also wanted to support our shelling tour boats and needed to recharge after massive cleanup. Thank you to all of your supporters for their prayers and kind words. It really means a lot to those of us who call SW Florida home.

That was very moving and I believe you are so right about getting out and doing "normal" things after such devastation, there are so many benefits for everyone in those simple actions. I'm sure many of us are interested in any information you are able to share with us regarding tourism, so that we too can visit and support those local businesses. As far as this tour to Kice, wow that was a lot of Pen shells. As always you got a fabulous haul and my favorite was the True Tulip, until you picked up the Rose Murex. You are an inspiration to anyone who is facing challenges right now, in SW Florida and everywhere else. Hi Sharmon,
I can totally understand that you started to cry. Because the devastation is awful. Not only all the nature that got destroyed, but especially all the people that lost their lives, and the people that lost their livelihood and their houses. This hurricane was so, so bad.
But despite of that all, people and nature will recover. We are resilient. And I'm so glad that you're helping local businesses to get back on track! 💙
The shells you've found are gorgeous!
Especially those beautiful FFC's with all their patterns. Amazing that not one of them is the same.
    And that Rose Murex. WOW!😍
But all those bugs...... girl, it would have been jumping and screaming with all those little critters flying around my legs and body. 😱
I really hope that you are feeling ok. Please let us know if we can help.
Wishing you a wonderful week, filled with love and joy.
Big hug and lots of love, xoxo ❤️, Ilona

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  Год назад +1

I will tell you 100% the truth - those bugs were the most miserable thing I think I've ever encountered. I was not happy, at all, and literally might have left if there was an option to leave. I was unhappy, sad and dealing with horrible biting bugs. However, I am not a quitter so I obviously stayed and kept looking for shells and the wind eventually picked up a little so the bugs abated. I was going to tour again tomorrow but Ali said there were bugs and I immediately declined - LOL! I am going to the beach again but I am feeling rather anxious about Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel - two of my most favorite island beaches. I hope to be able to at least see them soon, but I also hope it doesn't destroy me. I have spent countless hours enjoying the sand and views of those island. I'm hoping it won't be all that bad, but it will be what it will be ❤️❤️❤️ I hope your health is good and everything is great in your part of the world!

Love your first 2 shells. The first bigger conch, your 3rd find, I love. The purple live apple murex was beautiful. I do like the purple red banded shells. Love the hinged Sunray Venus clam. That "super orange fighting Conch was gorgeous. The following small Florida
cone was so cute. The 3 fighting conchs in your hand and the following lace murex are great. Then the mellow orange fighting Conch was beautiful. That brown orange fighting Conch up where you got back into the pin shells was a favorite of mine
. That pear welk you first thought was a lightning welk is beautiful. I'm not as big of a fan of pears. It was right before beach time. I only like the dark brown alphabet cones. The Gaudi you found when washing the conch is lovely. The zig zagy fighting conch is gorgeous. The Nutmegs on this trip are awesome. The tiny attached cross bar Venus clam was precious. It was awesome you did that for Ali and Carlos. It's their livelihood. The couple coming on the tour was great for them. Kice is wonderful.

It breaks my heart more that you, of all people, should feel you need to defend your shelling activity. That's what feeds your wonderful, generous, loving soul, Charmon! Hello, I didn’t think I’d see a showing video until the new year. So thank you so much for going out and bringing us along. When I visited Florida 30 years ago the beaches of Sanibel had shells a foot thick. So if you took away some of the destruction all of the destruction That’s what Sanibel looked like 30 years ago. I agree with you wholeheartedly on helping the local businesses stay afloat. I haven’t been to a food store in almost a year. I have badly damage lungs, and the doctor said if you caught Covid you’re gonna die . So with that knowledge I have tipped the people that I’ve done my grocery shop shopping very well over the last two years. When we were there 30 years ago they didn’t have shelling tours, they thought it was kind of silly. I’m glad to hear things are trying to get back to normal. I know how badly you guys were hit by that hurricane. It’s almost 10 years to the day that hurricane Sandy destroyed the beach in New Jersey. The only place that didn’t have trouble with Wildwood because their beaches are close to a quarter mile deep. So on the news every day they talk about hurricane Sandy 10 years ago . I’m sorry I started ranting. Again thank you for taking us with you when you went shelling. Kathy

Can't believe the number of shells after that horrific Hurricane Ian which like so many other hurricanes looks like a bomb hit! I live on Cape Cod, aka "The Florida of New England" and of course we don't have the number or kinds of shells you have and while we have gotten hurricanes we usually get the tail end of ones. Last big one here was Hurricane Bob in 1991 and the most famous one here in 1938, no warnings back then. We have mostly clam and Quahog shells, some scallop and oyster shells and often times broken because of the rougher pounding of the waves! I still have all the beautiful shells my late beloved mother picked on Sanibel Island when she was dying of cancer. She died when I was 21 and now I
m 74 and have had these interesting shells for years, many with lavender and pink as well, often times shiny unlike the ones here! We also have razor shells and when I was little would often times cut my feet on them like other people have.
Hope and pray Florida heals from all the devastation and carries on! Time for all of us to become more environmentally aware because we're seeing the devastating impact from Global Warming/Climate change even here which decimated a famous beach here because of rising sea levels and very severe beach erosion! We also had huge icebergs , taller than human beings on the outer beaches here a few years ago that had floated down from the Arctic Circle which is melting! First time ever, and there as already been a break in the arm of the Cape and the beaches are much narrower than they were decades ago because of rising sea levels and severe beach erosion! Along with more sharks because they love warmer waters and love to feed off the seals here. A young man, a lawyer died from a shark attack last summer 2021. Be well and blessings~♥🙏🙏🐚💗💜

Very happy to see another shelling video after all the devastation from Hurricane Ian. I’ve watched the last couple videos showing all the damage from it and it’s just heartbreaking! Glad you’re getting back out there and supporting local businesses and keeping them going. My son and I did a shelling tour back at the end of June with Treasure Seekers Shell Tours, and Captain Matt and Shell Guide Shirlee took us to Dickman’s for a bit and then we hopped over to Kice and it was just beautiful! I was able to find some nice bucket list shells, but there weren’t near as many shells as in this video…so many beautiful ones to pick up. And I agree…there’s just something about those FL Fighting Conchs that you just can’t pass up and they are so beautiful! I hope to be able to get back to SWFL one day soon and go out again with Treasure Seekers…they are amazing!

Typically there are more shells in the winter than there is in the summer so perhaps you toured more in the summer months? To be fair, shelling after a hurricane is pretty much always going to kick up shells. And since Ian was such a jerk the shells were there for quite a while.

My parents took me and my 3 sisters to Sanibel Island all the time when we were growing up. It was our favorite place to visit and we could go often enough because we lived in So. Florida. I must admit though, I have not ever heard of Kice Island. It is so devastating to see the damage from the hurricane, but it's wonderful to see that folks are out, trying to rebuild. I look forward to a day when we can return to the area to go shelling again.
